Description: The Spice Island Inn is situated on The Point in Old Portsmouth with the most beautiful view across Portsmouth's busy harbour, Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower. Originally 3 pubs that were converted into one in 1991. We are an exceptionally busy pub in the warmer summer months and if you want to have a leisurely drink and/or something to eat this is the place for you. We have 2 bars and tables in the upper bar can be reserved, there are a number of seats outside too which are very well used in the summer months. Some people believe Spice Island is a restaurant, but in reality it is a pub with a good food offering. Our speciality dish is hand battered fish & chips which is popular with many of our customers. We do hire out our upper bar for private functions and events. There is always at least 3 cask conditioned ales available, with guest ales making a regular appearance.

Arrived at this account on Saturday 19th July 2014 as pre arranged at 7.30 in the evening, we ordered our starters which were checked by waiting staff on 3 separate occasions, it was not until 9.30 that the last customers in our party received their starters.
The waiting staff were very inexperienced and had to be shown what a double gin & lime was, although they did try there best.
The starters came out at different intervals during this 2hr period, also 2 of the waiting staff were distressed and crying and you could hear foul language coming from the kitchen.
At no time did the female manager come to the table to apologise she left this to the duty floor manager, I feel her actions were inappropriate and feel you need to investigate this further, this is not giving Greene King a good name & I can assure you I will not be recommending this outlet to anyone. It completely ruined our night.
This is a shame because the venue & location is perfect & I'm sure sales would increase more if the correct management were in place

Sorry I would give -1it was dreadful, I booked for 11adults and 2 children for 19th July 2014. 20 minute wait at the bar to be served and they did not know what a Gin and Tonic was, food well, no soup as starter, no Rib eye steak one and half hours wait for starters to be completed being served, foul language and abuse from the kitchen for all to hear , young new inexperienced staff reduced to sobbing after entering kitchen
The only meal the was edible was meant for another table

Went to a 50th birthday party at spice island and can only describe the experience as shambolic. Paid £10 per head for only what can be described as Iceland buffet food. Had to ask for cutlery and napkins. Food was late arriving, with no member of staff willing to take responsibility for coordinating the event. As for the bar staff? More intent on concentrating chatting and joking with the local stag partys than providing decent customer service. Very poor all round.

After walking by the sea we decided to go to Spice Island for lunch. We knew they were dog friendly. The weather was very good so we sat out side. Loved watch all the boats etc going by. We were told how long the wait would be for the meal which was fine. We shared a platter which was very good.

Both this place and the Still and West have unfortunately become bland chain pubs representing their respective breweries. The Spice Island recently relaunched itself as part of Greene King's 'Flame Grill' concept. Unfortunately that means the same laminated menu without even the name of the pub on it. I would rate the food as not much better than a Wetherspoons, churned out of the back of a 3663 delivery lorry. The Spice Island's saving grace is that the beer is a reasonable price for Portsmouth, significantly cheaper than The Still and West. This place used to have individual character, now it's just staffed by youngsters and a young gun manager, just like every other chain pub. These two places should showcase the best of each brewery (who do both make fine beers), but they don't.
