“Traditional Seaside Hotel”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

And that's more or less a compliment! If you want modern boutique style, forget this one, if you don't mind a more traditional appearance and atmosphere then this hotel will satisfy.

Good things....
Not expensive (B&B £85 Sun night, £115 Mon night) for a huge sea view room. Excellent queen bed, quick wifi, bathroom very clean and everything worked. Tea and coffee tray with decent biscuits.
Very pleasant staff all round, anxious to please and helpful with local directions etc.
Free car park, bit tight but competent drivers will cope.
Really good breakfast, with buffet and fresh cooked eggs of choice, and even Kippers!

Less good things.....
Don't bother with the bar if you like real ale. Plenty of good pubs about 10 minutes walk up Waverley Road into Albert Road.
Where did they get such skimpy pillows......

If you're in town for the Historic Dockyard attractions, The Mary Rose and Victory exhibitions and plenty of other stuff, which we found well worth the high cost, leave your car at the hotel and take bus No 1 from the stop about 100 metres away from the hotel, it will save you really expensive parking at the Dockyard.

Room Tip: 208 is a good size, and right on the front, but the bathroom is equipped for handicapped guests, and...

Thank you for your review and I am pleased you had a good stay with us, It makes a pleasant change to find someone who appreciates the speed and quality of the Wi-Fi we have recently upgraded to fibre optic. We do not have a demand for real ale but try to offer a varied choice in our bars, best wishes Chris Gilmore GM

Stayed here for 5 days in June and really enjoyed it. The Hotel was clean, the food was great and the Staff were very friendly and helpful. Although our room was on the side on the fourth floor we were quite happy as it was very roomy and comfortable. The Royal Beach stands opposite the sea and you can sit and watch the ships going in and out of Portsmouth from the seats on the prom, with the Isle of Wight as a back drop. Local Buses are every 5 minutes or thereabouts and it is so convenient to get to the shops in Southsea, or visit the Historic Dockland in Portsmouth (a must). We really enjoyed the trip up the Spinnaker, the lift was amazing as you don't feel or hear it move! Cafe's and restaurant's are also abundant.
We hope to go back again one day and would recommend the Royal Beach.
Be aware that there is no entertainment at this Hotel which suited us fine.

Room Tip: This Hotel has two lifts so which floor you are on shouldn't be a problem. If we go again I woul...

Stayed for two nights, single room very large with good view over the seafront. Bathroom could do with a bit TLC. Apart from the carpark which is far too small and is very easy to get blocked in, I would have no problem in recommending this hotel to others. Good value for money.

Room Tip: Get a room at the front of the hotel

We booked for an overnight stay prior to taking the ferry to France, and weren't expecting much. However we were very impressed with what we found. The hotel is opposite the defunct Southsea pier and beach, and is a prime location to watch the numerous cyclists and joggers on the esplanade. Buses go past the front door for trips into Portsmouth, if needed. We were 2 couples and a baby so had dinner early in the bar; food and service excellent. Breakfast was buffet service with some additional items cooked to order, and again was mainly of a high standard (fruit juice a bit uninspired). The rooms were spacious and well appointed. The corridors were looking a little tired, although notices announced new carpets were soon to be laid. Other guests seemed mainly from coach parties.

Room Tip: I think the hotel is designed so most if not all of the rooms have a sea view. There was some noise...

Stayed the last weekend in June 2014. Hotel was busy, but the service was very good. Especially in the restaurant. Experienced team met everyone's needs quietly & efficiently. Breakfasts were plentiful, with a good variety of hot & cold food. Extras available on request. Dinner was very good from the carvery menu, far too much! Our room was lovely, double aspect windows, lovely views over the prom. The bathroom was very clean, a little tired in decoration. The corridors were in the process of being recarpeted & updated.

Room Tip: We had 405, very happy with this. Massive bed. Corner suite, light sunny.

Booked two rooms for my wife and I and my elderly inlaws at £110 and £125.

At check in we could see the hotel had a great location but the common parts are tired and run down. In reception a dozen flies are buzzing around the centre, no one cares. Check in was disinterested and unhelpful, similar to our experience in the lounge bar.
The rooms were acceptable but again tired.
At 8.00am the banging started as the carpet outside our room was torn up. That sounds low impact but they may as well have been tearing down a wall outside the room (see pic). I complained to the manager that there should have been a note on the website or advice when booking. He apologised but said posters in the hotel and something on Facebook was sufficient warning.
Ultimately he was very unhelpful. This hotel is hugely overpriced anyway even without noisy builders.
