“Excellent overnight accommodation”
Reviewed 17 August 2010

Myself and my wife stay here twice a year as a stop over after returning from France on the cross channel ferry. OK so the Marriott isn't the cheapest hotel chain but after staying in the next door hotel a couple of times it's well worth paying the extra, you get what you pay for. The rooms are so comfortable it sets us up for the long drive to Scotland the next day.
We can recommend room service and the club sandwich after a late arrival at 22:00 and the buffet breakfast in the morning is excellent to set you up for a long day. If you are a regular visitor join the Marriott rewards and can earn enough points for a free stay and get details of special offers.

This hotel has been recently modernised and our room was excellent. The bed was enormous, with loads of pillows and cushions. There was lots of storage. Plenty of refreshments were provided, with tea and coffee making facilities and a well stocked fridge. The flat screen tv had dozens of channels available. The temperature of the room was easily adjusted. The bathroom was a good size, with lots of shelf space and a second hairdrier.
The room itself was excellent value for money but I felt breakfast was rather pricey at just under £15. I would have given 5 stars for cleanliness, but the top of the ice bucket was dusty and the teapot was not washed out one day.
Overall, this is an excellent hotel and I would recommend it highly.

Excellent stay. Mam's 73rd birthday so travelled from Durham and other family joined us from Portsmouth, Isle of Wight and Hillingdon in Middlesex. From checking in staff were aware of the celebration and made my mam feel special throughout the weekend. Guest relations provided extras on the first day and Sunday Lunch in the Ocean level restaurant was fantastic with staff showing awarenesss of the occasion and excellent customer service throughout. We had occasion to use the leisure facilities and again staff were attentive and sensitive to a problem one of our party encounterd. I have stayed in many hotels throughout the years usually business related but this is a first for the Marriott and it certainly rivals even some of the Hilton's I have stayed in. here's hoping the Marriott in Durham comes up to the Portsmouth standard. Lovely pub next door - Harbour Lights - with good food and wine and a Premier Inn if cost is a problem but you would like to dine or have treatments in the leisue club belonging to the Marriott.. A short drive from Port Solent with it's fabulous restaurants and marina and not too far from Gunwharf in Portsmouth itself about £8 in a taxi with excellent shops and harbour restaurants and of course the historic docks which we also visited.

Standard room had two double beds, but only one bedside table, which was inconvenient. Sea view with good imagination. In a businesspark location but within easy walking distance of Port Solent shops and restaurants - you walk across the lock and round the harbour, and it takes about ten minutes. Well served by buses to Portsmouth centre and seafront: bus-stop about ten minutes' walk away on the Southampton Road towards Cosham.

We had a very pleasant stay. We each ordered the continental breakfast via the card in our room. When the they arrived (roughly in the slot we'd requested) there was toast and cereals, but no fruit juice or pastries as the menu had indicated. After a call down to room service this was eventually corrected. It was never made clear whether this was a problem with the menu card or the service. The food when it came was pretty good: the toast and coffee were hot and freshly made.

Stayed at Marriott and on the whole I would rate this hotel as average, particularly in terms of service. I had booked a fruit basket for when I arrived, but although the hotel acknowledged the order we didn't receive it. Asked hotel to book a taxi- it didn't arrive, so had to make our own arrangements. It was a warm weekend and unfortunately minibar/fridge in room didn't work, reported this to hotel and they apologised that it couldn't be fixed and as they were so busy we couldn't be moved to another room! The
hotel did however let us have our drinks as complimentary, and this was a welcome gesture even if the drinks were warm! The hotel had a couple of wedding parties and the place seemed hectic and packed. Not a leisurely experience. Probably wouldn't stay here again.

Son and I travelled by train and took a very reasonable taxi from Gunwharf Quays; busy junction nearby but noise not intrusive. Husband came by car and got a bit lost but found it eventually. Lovely clean and spacious top floor rooms, great beds and comfortable. Bar service was a little slow on the Friday but staff friendly. Good meal. great breakfasts.
Helpful receptionist spent ages getting fares and availability of crossings to Isle of Wight. Generally what you would expect from a Marriott!

We got a decent promotional rate here and parking was free. However, the deals stopped there. Internet was priced too exorbitantly to use; I was charged eleven pounds for a five-minute LOCAL phone call; restaurant prices are killer, with mediocre food. Pool looks nice, but jacuzzi has no useable jets. The room itself offered good quality sheets, pillows and mattresses so we did have a good sleep, but we couldn't afford to do anything in the hotel. Location is a bit awkward for seeing the main Portsmouth sights, but it worked as a coaching stop. If you stay here, go down the road to Tesco where you'll find a Costa Coffee for a more reasonably priced breakfast. And whatever you do, don't make a phone call from your hotel room!

Dear guest,

thank you for your feedback and we are sorry hear that you did not find our hotel prices good value for money. Our phone prices are mentioned next to the phone and the prices to call a UK mobile number are expensive. Therefore these prices are attached to the phone. The jets in the jaccuzi are not as strong as they have been, due to additional safety repairs we have had to make.
We hope to see you again soon.

yours sincerely,
