“Palmerston's Legacy preserved.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2012

Of the many forts built during the period when war with France seemed inevitable. Lord Palmerston's timely foresight in ordering their contruction is evidenced in the well preserved completeness of Fort Brockhurst which is also easily accessible. It is a pity that so many others in this part of the south have been allowed to decay by successive disinterested local authorities.

“OK, but not much there”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2012

In it self is OK, but you do have to pay to go in (which is fine, it is a monument), but once in there realy is not very much there.
The view looking back towards Portsmouth from the top is very good. The location feels very remote (being so close to a town and city) with not much else around or going on, and nearby Porchester town is almost certainly a run down town centre to avoid. Ok if your passing, but questionable on its own.

The history of this site I found fascinating considering it never saw service as a fort!

“Well worth a look”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2012

Fort Brockhurst is one of a number of forts built in the 1850's-1860's known as Palmerston Forts. These were built to protect Portsmouth and its naval base from French invasion. The moted fort stores a lot of English Heritage's reserve collection from the south of England. You are free to walk around the fort and go into various rooms including the abloutions and ramparts. The fort is open on the second saturday of every month from April to September and entry is free.
Best go for a look before they start to charge.
