“Too good to miss!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2014

We always stay at the Queen's when we come to visit my family in Portsmouth. The staff are always very friendly and go out of their way to help you. Nothing is too much trouble
.
This weekend we ate in the smaller restaurant Libby's, it is a well decorated, cosy space. The food was delicious I had the amazing Hanger Steak and the triple cooked chips are to die for! All served with a modern twist.

I keep saying we are going to have the Traditional Afternoon Tea one day...it looks amazing.
Our bedroom as always was spotlessly clean and it is always worth upgrading for the amazing sea view. Breakfast is great, plenty of it and again the staff are faultless.

This is my first review on Trip Advisor as a friend told me that some of the reviews on here had put her off booking. Yes, the building is old and a little tired in some places but work is in progress at correcting this. Look past this and you will see a grand old building that would not look out of place in a set from Downton or Mr Selfridge.

I would rather stay in a hotel that I know I am going to be well looked after than a sterile modern hotel with robot staff that don't smile.

Room Tip: A sea view is a must!

We booked a table for a few friends to meet up for a birthday lunch. Being mid-week it was a quiet time. We sat down to eat at 1pm and due to the exceptionally slow delivery of food didn't leave until 4pm! Two people in our party complained about their starters, which were virtually cold. The main meals were not very substantial however the prices were! I will willingly pay good money for a good meal but this was not. The deserts were very nice (when we eventually got them) although again very small portions. We ordered coffee at the same time as the deserts as some of our party had other appointments that day. The coffees ended up being complementary (a goodwill gesture for the poor service). How long would it have taken I wonder had they been busy! First and last visit for me. Back to the Royal Beach Hotel where I always receive excellent food, great service and value for money.

Receptionist was nice and friendly.
Bar tenders not very talented, they even looked and been very very awkward.
No RedBull in the bar, but you can get a lovely 69p energy drink poored into the glass in front of you for £1.80
Room is niceish, bit scarry pictures and beed to run the water for 5min to have it hot. Kettle is disgusting, we rather didnt boile water in it.
We do understand its a traditional building, but why every single traditional building is falling apart is this country?!
All in all, we enjoyed our 2 nights stay, would not stay here again for the same £190. Btw, wifi is very very weak, this hotel is useing cloud hotspot. Useless! We had to purchase BT wifi during our stay what turned out not much better either.....

We visited here for a friend's birthday on a Saturday afternoon. Despite other people's comments I like the old - fashioned decor and character of the building. The view is lovely too...

My main criticism is the service... our table was set for one less than the number in our party.... My friend (the extra one) had to find her own chair to add to the end of our table after waiting for a few minutes like a lemon thinking one of the staff might do this for her!! Then they didn't bring her out any food at all (the stands of food were all designed to be shared between 4 people with individual portions of dessert etc but the fact there were 13 of us seemed to escape their attention)... when we asked for food for the extra person it seemed that the only sanwiches they had left were egg mayo... Although after complaining some cheese and ham did miraculously appear, the smoked salmon was 'gone' even though it seemed to be back for people arriving after us and no reflection of this 'unavailability of the most expensive sandwich filling' was made in the bill of course!!!

All in all the food was really delicious but the service lousy... a nice polite waiter did appear just before we left and we wish he had been there all along - the waitresses just didn't seem bothered about anything - miserable looking, unhelpful and anything but attentive!

The hotel is a beautiful old building with lots of character but the facilities and decor are very tired and dated. The carpets were stained, walls needed a paint job and used dishes and cleaning equipment were left out in the corridor floor for hours.

Our room was tiny and the shower was just awful - barely functional. There was a wedding on the night we stayed there - not much the hotel can do about that - but it really took over the whole downstairs in the evening and we could hear the music in our room until 1am.

The staff were nice and friendly and the breakfast had a good selection of choices. Nonetheless the hotel is not cheap and you can do better for your money I think.

took my wife here for afternoon tea at the weekend and it was really nice the staff were very attentive and the setting is lovely even though there was a wedding going on in other parts of the hotel it was still quiet and relaxing. the food was lovely and all presented very well. the only thing that would of made this better would of been if the tea was served in bone china pot and cup set would of just finished it off nicely. other than that lovely afternoon

First class treatment from George and his team, a smashing weekend stay and glorious weather. A very traditional hotel that works very hard to make itself feel small and intimate, get a sea view room. Room 244 is a peach. Thanks to all for a lovely weekend.

The original Queen's hotel was known as Southsea House and was built by the architect Augustus Livesay, in 1861. It was then a large private house owned by Sir John and Lady Morris and was later transformed into one of the first hotels in Southsea by William Kemp Junior, this is when it became known as the Queen's Hotel. In the late 18th century the Queen's Hotel had a yacht club that stood behind it called the Royal Albert and was also surrounded by woods, which were then called Stone Woods. On December 8th 1891 in the early hours of the Sunday morning a disastrous and fatal fire occurred. Aided by strong winds it raged until the whole of the premises had been completely gutted. The Hotel was rebuilt in 1903 by the architect T.W.Cutler into the splendid building that stands today, complete with its Edwardian baroque style in brown terracotta. ... more   less
