“Great place for tapas!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2014

Just called in to Monks for a quick drink, but weather wasn't great so we decided to stay for food. So glad we did as it was the best tapas I've had in a very long time. Fab aubergine and potato dishes and the chorizo was amazing!
Cava was lovely and the whole meal very reasonable. Will definitely go back and take some friends!

“Christmas Day - I was so ashamed”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2013

This should have been a very special lunch for my family who we're visiting from Newcastle and London. On arrival there was no warm greeting, in fact we were ignored for about 5 minutes!!! Don't know where the welcome host was, at £60 per head one would expect a warm welcome. Silver Service would have also been expected not the cafeteria style service we received.
It took two hours to serve two basic courses - Two prawn cocktails and two soups to start and four Turkey dinners The food was adequate but NOTHING special. The main course including vegetables was all put on the plate (even the gravy without asking whether we wanted it or not) really a basic catering student knows not to do that.
The Christmas Pudding came in the third hour again with some watery sauce already served on it; It couldn't be eaten with the meagre amount served. When the cheese and biscuits came they were presented with the remark "So do you want Cheese & biscuits?" When we replied yes the next remark was "we'll you can have these because they don't want them!". No mince pies arrived in the fourth hour as advertised but by then we just wanted to leave. It was appalling and the management knew it but no apology or discount was offered. Never again, you have showed Portsmouth to be a place that does not understand a bit of class very poor show indeed.
However, the staff were very pleasant and tried hard shame about the Management.

“Thanks for a fabulous Christmas day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2013

A big thank you to all the staff at Monks for making us (self, mother & friend) so welcome on Christmas day. The bar and restaurant was busy and this really added to a lovely vibrant atmosphere. The meal was very traditional and nicely prepared we all had the turkey & trimmings and plenty of wine to wash this down.

I have eaten out on Christmas day in several places but always felt rushed with courses arriving too quickly; this was not the case here as there was plenty of time between the courses to relax and chat.

“Very disappointing Christmas lunch”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2013

We decided that this year, for the first time, we would go out for Christmas lunch. My son, who lives in Old Portsmouth suggested Monks Bar, so we booked that. The meal started well, the bar looked very festive and the staff were attentive. By the time we had finished the main course, the place was very busy indeed. My mother who is 95 and in a wheelchair was with us, so we were unable to go upstairs. Unfortunately, our table was right beside the bar and it became a far from pleasant place to eat because of the number of people at the bar.
It became apparent that there was just not enough staff on duty to cope with the number of diners. After quite a wait, he had to ask staff for our desserts, they brought my mothers but forgot ours, so we had to ask again for them. When mine came it was the wrong one but by then I could not be bothered to wait for the right one to come. Again we had to ask for our cheese and biscuits as no one remembered to serve them. I asked for a doggy back for my mums lunch as she has eaten so little of it.that never came. So, all in all, my first experience of eating out on Christmas Day was very disappointing. On a positive note, the staff were very cheerful, polite and helpful, it was just that the place was understaffed and they were rushed off their feet. I was glad to leave to be honest.

“Closed to the public?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2013

We dropped in to Monks, last night, for an early evening drink. After ordering the barman said "you don't have to pay its a free bar for the party". We said we were not in any party just out for a drink. He said "the bar is closed to the public and you should not be in here" We paid for the drinks and took our time drinking them. Several other members of the public came in and were told the bar is closed. We had to leave when we finished our drink. It seems strange to me that a prominent bar/restaurant should be closed to the general public without warning.
Will think twice about going in again for a drink.
