“Beware of the sofa beds and chaotic breakfast”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

The overall hotel is nice and the staff helpful and has a good range of facilities. However we did experience a couple of issues. Booked a family room for 2 adults and 2 young children which when we arrived at 4 pm didn't have the children's bed made-up. Asked reception, who assured us it would be done by 6 ( the guy wrote it down). At 6.45 still not done, reception promised to call housekeeping who did turn up 10 minutes later to make up the sofa bed. Unfortunately the sofa bed unfolded into 2 single beds with a 5 to 6 inch gap between the open frames. My youngest promptly fell down the gap got stuck, and banged his arm on the exposed metal frame. When we told the front desk they noted the issue and said it would be raised as a safety concern.
Breakfast was chaotic, lots of waiting around for plates and food, although good choice when it was there.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Solent if you can.

Dear 321LV,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Portsmouth.

Please do accept our apologies for the delay in setting up the sofa beds for you. I have checked, and your concern regarding the safety of the beds have been passed on and we are looking into alternatives.

We were also disappointed to read about your experience at breakfast, as this is not to our usual standard. I have passed your comments on to the Food and Beverage Manager and asked him to do some additional training with the team to raise service levels.

Thank you again for your kind review, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

With kind regards,

Mags

Ok so you know what to expect from a holiday inn right ? Well if you do then this one hits the spot and you'll be happy staying here !
If not..... The hotel is functional with friendly experienced staff that smile and help if needed!
The rooms are again solid, very clean, and comfortable and design wise- perfectly formed for the traveler who loves well thought-out spaces with no fuss.
The location in this hotel is key! A short walk to the shops and bars with parking and the sea is a stone’s throw away.
Breakfast rocked…pancakes that where amazing, fresh fruit, good coffee and lots of it !
The one and only ask…. Please supply Wifi Holiday in so I can post my good review for free ;-)

We stayed here overnight as we were attending a function locally. There was an issue with car parking because of major event taking place on the common but the hotel did the best to manage this. The service overall was very professional & friendly and breakfast in the morning was very good. The bedrooms are looking very 'tired' no pun intended. They need refurbishment soon.

Room Tip: Rooms at front on 3rd floor and above have good view over the common & the sea

Dear 39Carrie,

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Portsmouth.

We are in the midst of an inhouse maintenance and redecoration program, however, during the busy summer months this does not go as quickly as we would like as we try and minimise disruption to our guests.

My girlfriend and I stated for one night using reward points. It is very easy to find (my sat nav took me straight there) and is overlooking the seafront at Southsea and a 2 minute walk to the seafront.

There is a car park, but not a huge amount of spaces but there is ample overflow with a permit round the corner.

The room wasn't the largest but good view.

Staff were friendly and a great staff for exploring Portsmouth or using as an overnight stop to your holiday.

The hotel decor is a little tired but it makes up for this with excellent staff and by being really clean.
It's about 12 minutes walk to Gunwharf and the histoic dockyard.
Breakfast is disappointing and a little understocked. Coffee is poured by staff from a pot so if you want more than one cup allow some extra time as signalling for more can be a challenge if it's busy.
Our room on the top floor was clean, comfortable, surprisingly quiet and had an amazing view.
We'll stay again if we are overnight in Pompey.
Thanks to everyone there - we felt welcome and special. Customer service was superb from reception, housekeeping and in the bar.

Stayed here using some of my loyalty points. Was a weekend away with my wife for some site seeing and r&r.

I booked an executive room and was disappointed at how small the room was compared to other holiday inn hotels. We had a room on the top floor which was quite and had a good view but spoilt by small windows. The room itself was clean and tidy.

We used the health club at the hotel which was nice and had a good sized swimming pool, plus gym, sauna etc.

We did not have evening meal at the hotel as wanted to try the main town.

Had breakfast at the hotel and this was good but the breakfast service was sloppy and in attentive. Had to chase the staff to get a coffee and again to get a refill.

The welcome at the hotel was also below holiday inn standards. We arrived before our room was ready and even as IHG members were dealt with in a brusk fashion. I had a much more friendly welcome at a holiday inn express the week before in Newcastle

The hotel as noted in other reviews is an older building (in think it was a Hilton hotel before) and shows this badly. If I had paid the rack rate advertised in reception of nearly £200 I would have been very disappointed.

If you stay here the extra for an executive room is not worth paying.

I think that the holiday inn express in the centre of portsmouth looked a better proposition.

Dear FieldyMouse,

Thank you for taking the time write a review about your recent stay on TripAdvisor, and for your continued loyalty as an IHG Rewards Club member.

As the hotel as built in the 1970's, the rooms are unfortunately all of a similar size, and as such we differentiate between Standard and Executive rooms based on amenities rather than the size of the rooms. The Executive rooms do have amenities including bathrobes, larger televisions, enhanced toiletries in the bathrooms, fridges with a mini-bar selection, safes and irons and boards in addition to the amenities offered in the Standard rooms.

Please accept our apologies for the inattentive service at breakfast. This is certainly not our usual standards, and I have brought your comments to the attention of the Food & Beverage Manager for further investigation. We will also be doing some in depth training with our Front Desk team regarding the welcome they offer to our guests.

We do hope that we will be welcoming you back soon, and thank you again for your review.

Mags

Stayed for two nights, hotel room was a little on the small side but for the amount of time we spent in it, was adequate. Not too far from restaurants near the gunwharf. Hotel booked a couple of taxis for us which arrived quickly. Debbie on reception was friendly and welcoming. Manager went out of his way to find me some glue for my shoes (thanks again to maintenance). It suited our needs for a reasonable price.
