“Overpriced but good location.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2009

We stayed here for a weekend break and had a disabled room.

The room was overlooking the car park, so it is disappointing that they think Disabled people dont want a room with a view.

The shower was odd, the floor in the bathrrom was flat and the water did not drain away as it should have done, leaving a great puddle evertime we used the shower. I think we both got althleics foot from standing in puddles of water, so no marks for that.

The breakfast was OK but the rate way overpriced for no cooked breakfast.

We were caught out on Saturday night as all the restruants were full and it was pouring with rain so we had to order food brought in from another place, it was Ok but a bit cold.

The extra charges are very expenisve to £1.50 for a cup of tea, £8 to use the gym down the road.

The decor could do with some updating, purple squares everywhere, not very tasteful, I dont know how much they paid the interior destiners but I reckon the local junior school could have produced better paintings.

I would get rid on the purple/blue /cream and put more subltle colours in, Premioer lodge is another one for using the purple.

The hotel is great for the shops and their is a tesco express next door which was raking in the money from people who did not want to pay the bar prices around the quay.

All in all a nice weekend but we will look for somewhere better value to stay next time we are in Portsmouth.

Stayed here for 1 night with my sister at the end of June, and can highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It was spotlessly clean, reception staff very pleasant and helpful, and room was perfectly adequate with one of the most comfotable beds I have ever had. We had a twin room which was quite spacious, bathroom was lovely and clean, nice shower and plenty of room, as well as air conditioning which we surprisingly needed as it was very hot and sunny when we were there!
The bar seems to be open quite late, we got back to the hotel around 12pm and were at the bar until 1am and there were still a couple of people drinking there, so it seems quite relaxed.
The breakfast was fine - plenty of cereals, croissants, bread for toasting, fruit, yoghurts, pastries and cakes. Coffee, tea and fruit juices also in plentiful supply.
The location of the hotel is excellent, it is just at the edge of the Gunwharf Quays - we arrived by train and it's only about 10 minutes walk at the most. The nearest bar is about a 20 second stroll, and all the shops are as close. There are numerous bars and restaurants all close by, some lovely ones at the front overlooking the harbour area, lovely for watching all the ferries coming and going. We had stunning weather when we were there and it was as nice as anywhere we have been abroad. Can highly recommend the Waterfront Brasserie, we had lunch there and it was superb.
The foot ferry to Gosport is also only 10 minutes walk away if you need it, we were here to visit my nephew at HMS Collingwood in Fareham so this was excellent as we needed to get over to Gosport to get to the naval base.
As a final note, cannot believe how anyone could complain about this hotel as it is perfect, some people have complained about the entrance - I don't know why as it is easy to get to, automatic doors, and a lift up to reception on the first floor. If a grand entrance is what you are looking for then maybe you should book a 5 star hotel somewhere else at 3 times the price. But if you want a great hotel in a central location, and have better things to do than sit in your room all day or look at the entrance of the hotel then this is the place for you! Go on, book it!!!

The developer keeps Gunwhalf Quays spotless and the hotel is very close to historic dockyard. There is always lots going on and plenty of places to dine.

We paid £54 pppn bed and continental breakfast based on two sharing and advance payement. Parking was £2 for 3 nights. Clean, cumfortable and no frills- we found it ideal.

This hotel is a nice new clean hotel that is located right where the action is. Its quiet if your room is on the back side away from the plaza where the views are the alley and garage. The shower head was great and the breakfasts were better with eggs and bacon and other selections you do not normally find in Express hotels. Again because this is an Express Holiday Inn there is no separate shampoo and soap, only a dispenser for shower gel that is supposed to do everything, so... ladies bring your own shampoo and soap.

Our major complaint was the entrance to the hotel which is really a back sliding door that leads out to an alley which leads to the underground parking garage. So.. when you are bringing up your luggage from your car, you have to fight with oncoming vehicular traffic coming down the alley and ramp into the garage because there is no sidewalk. While we were there the HC ramp was out of commission so we had to lug our luggage up the stairs. If you are coming from the ferry or the train you enter the hotel down a side alley hallway off the plaza that is very uninviting and a bit uncomfortable.

This hotel could be so much better! It is in a great location part of the Gunwharf Quays Shipyard and Shopping complex, but none of the rooms have any views over the water. We were placed at the top at the back overlooking the bin emptying area and the railway line, and directly facing private flats, so privacy was an issue. The room was fine, no complaints, but arrival, parking, and going in and out of the hotel with heavy cases is nightmarish, and I would definately not recommend it for anyone who is elderly or disabled, or struggling with small children. The car park is some distance away up and down stairs and lifts which is not made very clear when booking. Considering the price we were charged, (HiExpress have a clever way of bumping up the room rates at checkout - watch out!) we thought it was poor value for money, and would probably not stay again.

Location is great and really central to access all of the facilities at Gunwharf. My room was very basic and would have benefited from a proper clean - sheets, towels etc. were all clean, but there was a layer of dust on bed-side table, on the tv and on the vanity unit in the bathroom. There was not an iron in the room, and when I requested this I was asked to come and collect it from Reception - it was a very grubby iron attached to an ironing board which was severely stained - not good to put a clean shirt on!! There is no restaurant facility but they allow for food to be delivered to the hotel and also offer a self-service continental breakfast - cereal, juice, pastries and toast which were all good except that only one staff member appeared to be replenishing stocks and it was 15 minutes before there was more milk to eat my cereal! Parking was a nightmare as the hotel does not have a designated area, it is a case of using the public car park which services Gun Wharf - this can prove a long process as this is a very busy car park.! Hotel staff were all very pleasant and check-in/out was quick. All in all - it does what it says on the tin - it is a no-frills express hotel. In my opinion it is fine for 1 or 2 nights as a base as the location is great.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of February, having stayed there about a year ago as well. Our frist stay was very good indeed. The location is great - close to restaurants, shops and visitor attractions, and this hotel chain is usually very reliable in my experience. When we got to our room we found that there was a door connecting it to the room next door, which was locked. We have had bad experience with noise in the past in other hotels with rooms like this, so we immediately went back to reception and asked to move. We were told that there was no need to move, because they would not be letting the room next door duirng our stay. This was the case for the first night, but on the second day, we were woken early in the morning by noise and loud laughter from the next door room, which clearly had been let. We asked the people in that room to be quieter and they were very obliging and did their best. But we couldn't get back to sleep.

We felt very annoyed because we had been told that the connecting room was not going to be let. When we checked out, we complained. We were told that they had not guaranteed that they would not let the connecting room, just that they would try. We said that was not our understanding and that if that was the case, why didn't they move us to another room when we had asked. The receptionist replied that another room had not been available. We told her that was not true - friends of ours arrived about two hours after us, and found that they had been given a smoking room in error. They asked to move and were moved to another room. The receptionist clearly didn't believe us, asked when we had checked in, and had a look on the computer to see if there had been spare rooms - and of course there had been and she had to admit this. "All I can do is apologise" she said in a tone that indicated that she really did not feel we had a genuine complaint. We left very unhappy at the way our complaint had been dealt with.

The hotel and location are good, but more staff training on customer service is clearly required.
