“Fun for all ages”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

Lots of clearly marked exhibits both indoors and outside. Its worth trying to be there for the gun firing at 1pm and the cafe/rest area/toilets/gift shop is clean and has plenty of varied seating depending on wether you just want a sit or food & drink.

My grandson particularly liked two canon, one in the form of a sitting dog and the other a Burmese canon from 1882 in the form of an ornate dragon.

“Fort Nelson”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

Well worth a short visit but time your visit to be there about 1pm when the daily gun is fired. Do also inspect the two parts available of the 52 piece super gun.

“free, and fun”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

Fort Nelson is surprisingly large, with a good number of exhibits spread about however as entry is free it feels like all the effort has been put into the cafe (which is quite good) and the gift shop as these are the areas that create income.

There doesn't seem to be much on site to guide you around the place as the gaps between exhibts are rather large.

If you go into the big tent like structure and see the railway gun, there is plenty of other items in there, with little or no indication as to what they are. It feels like they've started and got bored.

Parking is available, however most of it is on the other side of a busy, but narrow road without a clearly marked crossing area.

Don't forget to visit the original Nelsons column,

It's well worth a few hours, but could be so much better.

“Worth a Visit”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

Our children wanted to see/hear canons (we did too), this fort has the biggest collection, all in an outstanding setting, amazing that's its free entry. Children were very taken with the little shop, they came away with a bow 'n' arrows and a sword (plastic). Best bit was that it was my birthday and my husband had fixed it for me to fire the 1 o'clock salute. Staff were fantastic and so friendly, a memorable and happy visit.
