We were disappointed when we visited Portsmouth Historic Dockyard last Summer to discover HMS Victory was undergoing extensive renovation with many sections (including the deck) closed off.
Utilising our original family ticket with gives free entry for a year, our second visit today was much more fruitful with renovations now seemingly complete. The tour of the ship takes in all levels and follows a set route defined by ropes. It really is a great experience to see the gun decks as well as you go up top to see the plaque marking the place that Admiral Nelson fell.
There are plenty of friendly staff on hand to explain the history in a very engaging manner.
My only word of caution is as a 200+ year old warship, HMS Victory wasn't built with the less mobile in mind. Stairs are numerous and very steep.
Well worth a visit as part of a day at the Dockyard !
