We were disappointed when we visited Portsmouth Historic Dockyard last Summer to discover HMS Victory was undergoing extensive renovation with many sections (including the deck) closed off.
Utilising our original family ticket with gives free entry for a year, our second visit today was much more fruitful with renovations now seemingly complete. The tour of the ship takes in all levels and follows a set route defined by ropes. It really is a great experience to see the gun decks as well as you go up top to see the plaque marking the place that Admiral Nelson fell.
There are plenty of friendly staff on hand to explain the history in a very engaging manner.
My only word of caution is as a 200+ year old warship, HMS Victory wasn't built with the less mobile in mind. Stairs are numerous and very steep.
Well worth a visit as part of a day at the Dockyard !

Thank Ste M

This is a 'must visit' attraction with a wonderful history. Fascinating for all ages, lots of things for children to see and touch and allow their imaginations to run wild! Always a shame when there is so much 'under covers' or scaffolding, but we do understand that it is a constant restoration process

Visited HMS Victory recently and was highly impressed with the 'exhibit'. First-class experience looking around the ship, pretty much as it would have been 200+ years ago. An excellent insight into how British sailors and officers lived on board a battle-ready ship. Life must have been very, very hard on board. The guides/volunteers were friendly and very knowledgable which only helped add to the enjoyment and experience.
Now I know the origin of the phrase 'to be pooped...' - it's not what you think! A fascinating experience and surely one of our nation's top exhibits.

An amazing piece of history on your door step. We visited on a wet cold day so unfortunately the upper decks were closed. None the less the rest of the ship was open and there was a great variety of things to see. The staff were friendly and informative and the guide sequence well laid out and logical. Mind your head, those deck heads are pretty low in places however it all adds to the experience. Overall very good and would recommend it to anyone.
