“A gem in Southsea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2009

We have stayed at the Florence House twice now and would highly recommend it.
Both rooms we have been in were spacious, clean and comfortable. The hotel overall is tastefully furnished, and clearly a lot of thought has been put into planning the decor.
The service is welcoming and friendly. We especially enjoyed the breakfasts, which offers a range of freshly cooked, high quality food.
Other small touches are the Fairtade tea/coffee in the room, and good quality shower and shampoo bottles.

I needed to revisit Portsmouth to arrange and attend a funeral. I booked a stay at the Florence for 3 nights. On the second night it was clear to me that I would not need the third night. The manager of the hotel refunded me the third nights stay immediately even though I gave him a tiny notice period and was the sole of discretion, good manners and tact. I cannot recomend this hotel highly enough. We were offered a free room upgrade. The breakfast is fantastic, platters of fresh fruit, lovely table settings. You can have whatever you feel like to eat. I felt as welcome as if I was staying with a friend. Comfortable beds, very clean en suite. Not a single bad thing to say, I only wish I had visited at a happier time. I never really thanked the manager at the time and I would just like to let him know if he's reading this that his hotel is just lovely, he's getting everything right and to say thank you to him properly. If you're visiting Portsmouth, stay here.

I stayed at the Florence House recently, with my wife and baby, and a very pleasant stay it was too.
As it was low season we had a choice of rooms. We chose room number 3, at the front, as the bathroom had a whirlpool bath in it. The room was very nicely decorated, not chintzy at all. Despite being at the front of the hotel, the room was very quiet, as the windows were double glazed.
The bathroom was quite small, but totally spotless. And did I mention that whirlpool bath? Lovely!
We couldn't go out in the evening, due to the baby, and the hotel restaurant was closed, so Daniel and his wife offered to babysit! We declined the offer and ordered a Chinese takeaway instead, which was brought up to our room on two large trays.
The breakfast was delicious, with loads of choice. What I liked about the breakfast was that you could choose different items from the menu, you didn't have to have a set breakfast. There was a good vegetarian option too.
All in all, a great hotel.
I'm knocking a point off for the mattress. A pocket-sprung one would have been more comfortable, but then I'm probably nitpicking.

my husband and 11 yr old son stayed in florence house and my mother and father in law stayed in somerset house.

I had emailed Daniel prior to going about our room and his response was very quick and helpful.

we visited portsmouth to attend the Christmas festival at the docks and to see the Mary Rose etc. Which we highly recommend but get there early if you visit next nov as its very popular and hectic, lovely shopping villlage with plentiful restaraunts.

anyway, on arrival Daniel was helpful with parking, yes it is at a premium in the immiediate area and narrow streets but he was very accomodating .

the hotel and its sister hotel Somerset house are decorated wonderfully, they are comfortable and spacious rooms , very clean linen and towels. we had a larger room with a sofa bed for our son, a lovely bathroom with walk in shower and plenty of towels, l'occitane products. kettle , coffee, tea. plenty of drawer space etc. everything you need to have a weekend away. Our breakfast was cooked very ,very well and although we had to wait a bit to be seated for our slot it was not a problem as we sat in the bar and had a chat and read the papers.

in low season they do not do meals other than breakfast but we were directed to the town which is a 5 min walk away to a new place called ranchos where we had a fantastic steak in nice surroundings and great service.

all in all we loved portsmouth, the history of the docks the fun of the victorian festival and our stay at the hotel, daniel and his wife are great at making you feel at home here.

i am very fussy about hygeine and service and i could not fault it here at all. my photos do not do the hotel justice at all .

  • Liked — personal service, cleanliness, locality
  • Disliked — was not that i disliked but thought could be more room at bar to chill out. not neg though

We found The Florence House Hotel on the internet which happened to be quite close to us. It was so beautiful and romantic we knew straight away we wanted to have our wedding reception there. We were able to book The Florence House and Somerset House (the sister hotel next to The Florence) exlusively so our families and friends could stay with us. We had the most amazing day, and were so grateful to Daniel and his team for helping to make our day so special.

The dining room was set up beautifully and we had an absolutely gorgeous meal, all our guests commented on how good the food was. We then had some more guests arrive for our evening reception. We had around 60 people altogether which was really perfect. Just enough room to either relax by the bar or dance by the DJ.

The bedrooms were all individualy decorated each with their own charm. Our honeymoon suite was really stunning which made the perfect end to a perfect day.

We were so happy to have found a venue that was so intimate and personal to us, and we would highly recommend this hotel for any occasion

  • Liked — relaxed and friendly atmosphere, along with the charming decor
  • Disliked — there really wasn't anything we disliked

Now that we've discovered this little gem of a hotel we will definitely return.
We chose it purely by location as we were off to a gig at The Pyramids but it turned out to be a great choice for lots of other reasons. It's beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, comfortable and has a really nice vibe. The owners have given every aspect a lot of thought and the attention to detail was obvious throughout our short stay.
Last but not least; the veggie breakfast was lovely !

Our stay at The Florence House was the perfect start to a much anticipated holiday in England. My wife and I spent months planning our holiday. Looking for a hotel in Portsmouth we discovered The Florence Hotel on Trip Advisor. The Trip Advisor reviews were promising and the hotel website impressive. In the end we were not dissappointed. The Florence House hotel exceeded our expectations. Daniel and his team could not have made us feel more welcome. After flying overnight from Singapore, then driving down to Portsmouth we were looking forward to a nice meal and a comfortable bed. Daniel directed us to a quality restaurant within walking distance of the hotel. The meal was excellent. Our room was a good size, immaculately clean, with a comforable king size bed. We slept very well that night. Breakfast the next morning lived up to expectations. Daniel was more than helpful with directions to the many local attractions. My only criticism was that the hotel was a little difficult to find. However, this is more a reflection of the AA directions than the hotel. When we return to Portsmouth we will definitely stay at The Florence Hotel.
