Beautifully furnished rooms, with staff that are so friendly, breakfasts fresh, delicious and cooked to order. Wouldnt stay anywhere else.

We stayed June this year for 3 nights.

Kind helpful staff, beautiful room.

Clean and tidy, in a quiet area of Southsea. Breakfast choice was great.

Will definately be stayed again and recommending to friends and family.

A little gem.

A four star break deserves four star treatment, and in terms of expectations, service, facilities and value for money, we feel we were let down at this hotel.
We feel the website is misleading, in that it tends to focus on the top spec room. "Caveat emptor" was never more appropriate in this respect. Our room was smaller than we expected. The furnishings were of high quality, but it was a pity that one of the blinds was missing its adjustment pole, the extractor fan in the bathroom did not work, and one of the wardrobe doors did not close properly. The hotel was not an oasis of tranqulity, as it was affected (like other properties in the area) by drunken revellers in the street in the early hours up to around 4am - not the hotels fault, but a fact of life in the city of Portsomuth. Having said that, we were given good advice about local restaurants in easy walking distance. We ate at several restuarants, including a fantastic Indian, a Greek/turkish, and traditional English, all with good hospitality and service - top marks. Back at the hotel, the duty manager (who seemed to be on duty just about all the time), did not seem that enthusiastic about his job or the hotel. We're all human of course, and I could not work in hospitality as it demands a peformance while on duty that is demanding and relentless. We were, however, reluctant to engage in conversation as guests, as we felt we were a bit of an inconvenience. There was little local information at the hotel but the duty manger was helpful in pointing out the way to the nearby tourist information office and local amenities. Our blackest spot was when we came back after a day out to find our room had not been serviced. The duty manger was clearly exasperated about this and sorted out new towels and milk & coffee sachets for us, but it would have been nice to hear the 'S' word, or even better, a bit of a sweetener (e.g. free cooked breakfast the next day). Breakfast in bed on day two was very well presented and discreetly delivered - thank you, duty manger. The standard of china, cutlery etc was all excellent, and although only a buffet breakfast was served as part of the price (£115/£169 p.pn, no cooked breakfast?), it was of a high standard for the sit-down breakfast on day 3. Parking was limited, but we manged to find a hotel slot on all days.
In summary, not the luxury break we had been looking forward to. The Florence House Hotel is fine if you have money, want to be near the town centre, like local good eating, want a well furnished small to medium room, are not fussed about interacting with the staff for a bit of a chat to help fell at home, bits not working in the room, and are used to the sound of drunks as part of city life.

This is a real find - such a lovely place, so clean and comfortable, delightful owner, quiet location but so near to the centre, and the breakfast was amazing (great veggie cooked brekkie), with extra special delights like selection of mini-muesli boxes, Tiptree jams, lovely home made fruit salad and nuts.... I'd be here all the time if it was nearer !!

The Florence House Hotel is elegant, well presented, well run and the breakfast is great! The fresh fruit salad was the best Ive had in a long time! Staff were friendly and attentive, organising little extras that made the trip so much easier.

After coming up with only chain hotels in internet searches I was so pleased to find this little gem of a hotel! Just what we wanted for a romantic weekend away. Great for us as we decided to come by train and it was just moments from the seafront. We had a lovely well appointed and comfortable room (The French Room) and subsequently re-designed our own bedroom at home following the theme/colours. Welcome was very friendly as we arrived before check in time but we were lucky in that our room was ready and we were able to check in and explore the area. Breakfast was great too with loads of variety and plentiful. We weren't able to visit in 2009 due to the birth of our first baby but look forward to returning in June 2010 for a special birthday/fathers day

Welcomed in a friendly manor by owner. Very unique hotel not far from seafront, yet quiet area. Beautiful Superior room which was very comfortable with an ensuite bathroom which had a wonderfully powerful hot shower. loved the decor. Great location, we went to Gunwharf by taxi for a birthday celebration which is very close by, Exremely comfortable bed. Great nights sleep. Good choice for continental breakfast which is included in room price but we opted for the cooked breakfast which although at an extra cost was well worth it - declicous breakfast! Great overnight stay from the Isle of Wight, would definately stay again when over that way!
