i have never written on tripadvisor before but thought i had to i and my wife have been going to hamilton house for eleven years and would not go back if it was bad we have never had reason to complain you are greeted at the door ASKED what you would like for breakfast introuduced to other guests which is nice as it breaks the ice and sometimes a laugh when names are wrong the breakfast sets you up for the day cerals are not supermarket brands the english breakfast is top grade this with your tea or coffee plus toast sets you up for the day you are always asked if you want more but always too full

The rooms are always clean and tidy with AMPLE tea and coffee making facilities if it was bad would i go back year on year plus other guests go back have recommended it to friends who have enjoyed their stay i will be back next year

My wife and I had never met Mr & Mrs Tubbuntil we stayed recently. I wish to put these recent negative comments in perspective. There were 3 Visitor Books full of praise for the friendly advice, kindness and comfort offered by the Tubbs. since they first started B&B at Hamilton House 33 years ago. The rooms are spotless and attractively furnished and decorated. Breakfast sets one up for the day and we found Mr & Mrs Tubbs to be very friendly and helpful.

An added plus is that there are regular buses to and from Historic Dockyard and Gun Wharf Shopping Mall from outside the door.

We booked for 3 nights but begrudgingly stayed 1, dogs mess by the front gate, exceptionally rude hostess. Website stated Modern amentities - well maybe in 1970! Wallpaper peeling in several places, had to move furniture to get to the plug sockets, TV that was ancient & on a gold waiters trolley! Tea & Coffee facilities were horrific - a half used jar of coffee, dirty cups, coffee stains on the chest of drawers, shower that took so long to heat up you had given up & had a cold shower, shower door covered in mould, ring marks on every surface, no parking facilities. Breakfast was too greasy & very cheap sausages, Orange juice that was tasteless, decor in breakfast room was old & dated. Hostess thought it was a wonderful idea to introduce all the guests to one another & couldnt even get the guests names correct. Reception desk was identical to the mini bar out of Only Fools & Horses! Never ever seen a worse place to stay. 4 star accomodation was the reviewer blind or bribed!

Where do I start with this horrific place. Firstly, I should have known better when attempting to book a place in Portsmouth a couple of weeks prior and found this to be the only B & B with available rooms............I should have guessed that this was for a reason!! I received a call the night prior to arrival from the owner of HH stating that I had to arrive earlier than previously arranged as she had made plans, to which I responded by saying I also had plans as it was my Holiday, and would therefore arrive when previously agreed, so not a great start. Upon arrival there the following day, I was then met with an unfriendly "at last you're here, I'm waiting to go out", so again, not particularly good. My family and I were then subjected to near interrogation about what we would like for breakfast, and were told in no uncertain terms that if our little boy, who is 22 months, wanted soldiers with his soft boiled egg in the morning he would have to do it himself, which I admit is trivial, but was very abrupt all the same. We were then escorted to an awful room which must have been decorated circa 1970 and not touched since. It was tacky, dated, worn out, and looked very tiresome indeed, with the refreshment tray consisting of the smallest kettle I have ever seen, and a half used jar of nescafe gold blend. Having tried to put a positive light on all of this, as well as the wallpaper hanging precariously from the wall over the bed, the final insult was in the perseverance we had to display just to get the toilet to flush!! Being halfway out the door when I was reminded by my girlfriend that we had nowhere else to stay and had already paid £90 non refundable, I turned back, and began the task of phoning around elsewhere in the hope of any cancellations, which thankfully there were but only for the following night and remainder of our Holiday there after. After a grease ridden and very awkward breakfast the following morning, where everybody in the stiflingly hot dining room was excruciatingly introduced to one another while mid mouthful of toast, we brought our bags downstairs, bade farewell, and got out of there. Ironically, the room we had in the next place wasn't actually that much better, but we weren't in a run down area of town, the Staff were extremely helpful and friendly which made all the difference, and the toilet flushed first time!!

We stayed one night in this B&B and it was really a bad experience. The room was clean but there were dirty towels in the corridor. The continental breakfast was awful: the milk had turned sour, toasts were half toasted, etc. In addition, the breakfast should have been at 6.30 am to catch the continental ferry but we had to wait so that it was hardly possible to eat something.
We had the very unpleasant feeling to bother S. and G. Tubb.

Had it not been for the rude and unwelcoming service experienced at this B+B (see below), Hamilton House would be an adequate place to stay. The rooms, though advertised on the website as 'modern', are of 1970's decor (avocado bathroom suite - carpeted - slightly drab wallpaper etc.); however they were clean, and comfortable enough. The colour t.vs must have been a first example of their kind - at one point, the only way to get a decent picture was by placing a heavy bag on the top. One room had very old and bobbly sheets, not to mention a coffee jar (part of the 'generous tea and coffee tray') which displayed 'Best before 2003' on the side. Despite an impressive front room, other parts of the accommodation had seen better days.

Yet it was the service of the proprietress which made this stay so unpleasant. Various queries about the accommodation were met with rude or patronising responses - confusion as to how to get to the breakfast room was answered by "It's that way, through the door marked 'Breakfast room' ". A complaint about a loud whirring noise coming from below one of the rooms during the night had the response "No one's heard that before - perhaps it's in your head". When turning the radio off in the breakfast room (as the only guests there), the proprietress snapped "Don't touch that". Whereas many people running such establishments would give their guests a choice as to what music, if any, to listen to in the morning, it seemed that here, the music was for the proprietress, and guests had to fit around that. To summarise, if you want to feel extremely uncomfortable, be lectured about time-keeping at the breakfast table and personally insulted, then by all means, stay at Hamilton House.
