“Lovely place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2013

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights the weekend before Christmas, so that we could visit our daughters who live in Portsmouth. We'd booked 2 nights earlier in the year but had to cancel when my husband contracted bronchitis. We were very disappointed not to be able to stay there in July when it was fully booked, so were overjoyed that they had room for us in December. The Retreat was everything we hoped it would be. It's run by a very friendly couple, Sian and Mark, who made us feel very welcome. He plays in a Queen tribute band and she is cabin crew with BA. The house is Victorian and the rooms are wonderfully large and very comfortable. It's set in a relatively quiet, residential part Southsea and is within easy walking distance of a multitude of restaurants and bars. It's a short walk to the seafront and very close to the main shopping area in Southsea. As stated in other reviews, breakfast was lovely and we particularly liked the tiny little plates of fresh fruit that were put out for us - just a few berries and slices of banana, but very refreshing. The Retreat thoroughly deserves the Excellent rating that so many guests have given it!

If you want a place to stay in Portmouth, you cannot go wrong with the Retreat guest house!!
Came to Portsmouth to go to the Victorian Christmas Market, looked at a number of hotels and plumped for the Retreat, so pleased I did. The rooms are exactly as pictured, the bed was comfy, the area was quiet, but close enough to walk to The Quays and dockyard.
Breakfast was lovely, the house is gorgeous, Sian and Mark are great hosts. I wholeheartedly recommend The Retreat as a place to stay. Enjoy - we did!

Room Tip: Any of the rooms are a good bet!

My husband and I stayed one night so that he could go to a gig at the Wedgewood Rooms. We just loved it. The house is beautiful and everything is so well cared for and loved. Breakfast was fantastic. Can't recommend it highly enough. We stayed in the Franklin Room and is was peaceful and relaxing. I think it is the nicest place we've stayed all year, and we've done a lot of travelling lately!

Room Tip: Franklin Room was nice but I expect they all are...

The Retreat is a quiet, friendly and inviting guest house or bed and breakfast in a suburban street in Portsmouth. Walking distance down to Southsea Common and a longish but comfortable walk to the rest of the City. I would agree with the other recent reviews and have no hesitation in recommending The Retreat as a worthwhile place to stay and explore Portsmouth. Try the Hole in the Wall for a local that is only a short stroll away.

This is one of the best places we have ever stayed. Rooms are exactly as they appear on the website. The house is amazing, the welcome so very friendly and the location excellent. My other half tells me breakfast is amazing also. Extremely good value for money, exceptionally clean and a wonderful ambience. I want to move in!

Thanks to Sian and Mark for making our two night stay a memorable one. The house is large and spacious with great history. Each of the three rooms that our group of 6 had were different and unique, but without doubt, of high quality. Spacious with spotless facilities, it was impossible to find fault. The docks and shops were within walking distance making this a great location to base ourselves. Mark had plenty of suggestions for places to visit and how to get around, supplying maps and brochures. They were a great team when it came to serving up the sumptuous breakfast each morning, it was a delight to work our way through the many options.
This was our last B&B after being in England for 6 weeks and it was poetic that the experience that Mark and Sian supplied was one of the best for the entire trip. I would recommend you add this B&B to your list of must do's. Thanks Mark and Sian.

We stayed here for a romantic break, just for the one night. The house itself is lovely, the rooms are exceptionally tasteful and your host, Mark, is very approachable and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and its location is perfect for the town centre. I would strongly recommend the 'Wade Room' as to us it appeared to be the lightest, most spacious and comfortable of the 4 rooms. The breakfast was very good and a lot of attention to detail. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Wade - large windows, light and airy with a Jacuzzi bath.
