“Poor cleanliness and service”
Reviewed 14 October 2009

Stayed at the Etap after an office party - I thought it would be adequate but was disappointed by the level of cleanliness the bed sheets had not been changed and when I mentioned it to and cleaning staff they were not were not helpful .

We stayed one night at Etap Southampton before catching an early morning flight from Southampton airport.

The hotel was cheap, £35 for two. The room was kind of hostel-like, with foam beds (which were still comfy) and a decent enough shower.

The room was not very clean however, we expect toothpaste / soap scum around the sinks in hostels but not in a hotel where the sink is in your room. There was also a large obvious glob of dried phlem / spit on the wall which didn't impress us much.

However, you get what you pay for and there are not many places where you can get a handy location & good sleep for less than £50!

If you're looking for a clean ,cheap place to lay your head for the night this hotel is great!
...That is exactly what we wanted after flying in from Canada for one night pre-cruise.
It is walking distance from the train station,or bus station as well as walking distance to the cruise port. There are stores and restaurants within walking distance as well.
While the rooms are tiny and hotel is no frills,it was clean and did the trick nicely for one night!

stayed in 2 rooms for 1 night while we took our daughter to university. very basic room with no wardrobe just 4 or 5 hangers under a shelf and couldnt believe there were no tea/coffee making facilities. we paid £60 per room as rates had gone up because of southampton boat show, otherwise it would have been £35 per room which would have been more in line with actual facilities provided. would only use again if desperate and only at £35 per night.

My sister, teenage daughter and myself stayed for one night when we took my son to university. The hotel was easy to find and within walking distance of the main shopping area. There is a TGI Fridays and MacDonalds right next door. The area seemed very safe. The rooms sleep 3 with a double bed and a cabin style single bed above the double. There is a good shower, seperate toilet and a hand basin by the bed. There is a small TV showing terestial channels. No kettle but hot/cold drinks and snacks available at reception. We didn't have breakfast but it seemed excellent value for only £2.99.
The room was basic but all that we needed and very clean with white bed linen and fluffy white towels. The corridors and reception were clean. The staff at reception were friendly and cheerful and check in/check out was easy. I will definitely stay here again when I go to visit my son and would recommend this hotel to anyone who needs a basic bed and shower.

I stayed at this hotel prior to joining the Queen Mary 2 for a 3 month contract. My company arranged the hotel, and as i'd had no previous problems with hotels booked by my company, i trusted that this one would be no different....i was wrong. upon arriving the service was average to say the least. i got the feeling that i was an inconvenience to say the least, but i'd had a long journey and so wasnt that bothered. upon getting to my room i noticed a funny, old smell, kind of like a caravan that has been shut up al year...not nice. my sheets and bed were clean and nice and fresh, so no problems there. however when i went to take a shower there was half a bar of old soap and a used shower cap on the shelf.....and there were hairs still stuck to the wall!
the bed was adequate, comfort wise, but i was not impresed with the room overall, it was old, tired and in need of updating.

i felt there was a poor selection of food available at breakfast, and so ended up going to mcdonalds which is just around the corner.

My advice.....thik carefully before you book, and only book as a last resort.

Although I have stayed frequently in Etap Hotels in France, this was my first visit to an Etap in the UK. Quite pleasantly surprised to find reception manned 24/7. In the reception area there are refrigerated cabinets with drinks, sandwiches, etc. Breakfast too was slightly different from my French experiences in that cereals are available. Spent two nights there and found all members of staff I encountered very friendly. Our room was on the ground floor overlooking the drive-in serving window at the adjacent McDonalds and although McDonalds is a 24 hour operation, with the bedroom window closed, our sleep was not disturbed. In any case there is programmable heating and air conditioning. The hotel is within easy walking distance of Southampton's main shopping area and the departure points for the Isle of Wight and Hythe ferries. Eating facilities nearby include the sister Accor hotels, Ibis and Novotel, TGI Fridays, Frankie and Bennys, Ask and as already mentioned, McDonalds. If you really want a greater chance of peace and quiet, you should perhaps choose a hotel out in the country but for city centre convenience at a good price, this Etap provided sufficient p & q for me in a town setting. In fact I've already booked to return next month.
