“Brilliant Value”

The hotels were pretty much fully booked the weekend we went, so I chose a B&B. Abbey Lodge was ideally placed for

meeting friends in Bedford Place and was excellent value. The owner/manager that we met at check-in was very

friendly and the room was clean and the bed was super comfy. Our only gripe was the check-out at 10am on a Sunday! We didn't take advantage of the breakfast, but it smelt nice!!

Still, will definitely consider the next time I'm in Southampton.

Four friends and I booked Abbey Lodge as an inexpensive overnight stay for a hen do. It cost something like £25 each for a night, which is by far the cheapest place I've ever stayed, so I was a bit worried about what it would be like.

As soon as we arrived, we knew it would be great - the owner is such a nice lady! We'd booked 2 rooms with a shared bathroom, so she'd put us all on the ground floor which meant we were the only ones using the bathroom, which was great and really convenient. The bathroom itself was good too - really clean and a great shower!

The rooms were clean and bright, the beds were freshly made and comfortable, and there was even tea/coffee facilities and a TV, which I wasn't expecting. Oh, and even wifi, and pretty speedy wifi at that!

The landlady let us come and go as we pleased, and warned us before we left for the main part of the night out that if we got back late we should try and be quiet or we'd wake the dog and it sometimes barked. We did as requested (which I think is only polite with other guests trying to sleep anyway?) and it was fine - some rowdier guests got back after us and the dog did bark briefly, but it was no big deal.

Breakfast was wonderful - the landlady personalised all our orders for cooked breakfast, and there was plenty of toast, jam, cereals and juice, as well as endless tea and coffee refills. It felt like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel, and that was lovely.

Great value for the money - we'll be booking in again when we return for the hen's wedding!

Ensuite Bathroom - very very small, not good at all for large people. Air freshener dead, pot porri long since stopped smelling nice, dusty and only one toilet roll between 2 people oh and A hole in bathroom door! Bedroom was in very sore need of updating, new carpet, bed linen and curtains would make such a difference and the room is most deffinately too small for 2 beds. Bed also very uncomfortable. Staff polite but always seemed hurried. Breakfast very limited and would be nice to be asked how we like our eggs! It's the little touches that matter for us so we won't stay again and won't recommend to any of our friends or family!

Abby Lodge had asked us to give our arrival time, which we did. Upon arrival, we stood outside in the pouring rain ringing the doorbell. After at least 5 minutes, a sleepy young man opened the door, and seemed suprised to see us. He told us that his mother had forgotten to tell him guests were arriving.
We were shown to our room which looked nothing like the photos we had seen. The room was freezing cold, and upon hearing a ghostly howling sound, we discovered that the window was broken, so that it couldn't be closed. l was almost in tears, we didn't know what to do.
When our host came home about an hour later, we were given another room. Window was shut, but was still freezing and heating was off. The bathroom was freezing and towels were worn. When we turned the bedding back, we could see the sheets were dirty and the pillowcase caked in old makeup from a previous guest. The bed smelt of urine. There was a lot of banging doors and barking dogs during the night. Breakfast was ok. My order of mushrooms turned out to be ONE tiny mushroom cut into 4. Bacon was fried well as my husbands egg was too. One tiny little sausage the size of my little finger. We were not asked if we wanted more coffee or toast.
This was supposed to be a very nice treat for us during our Christmas break - it turned out to be a total nightmare, and we feel so sad that this B&B ruined our stay in Southampton.
l cannot understand why this woman is allowed to run a guest house. Looking at previous reviews (which l should have done before we booked) l can see that almost all her other guests have been as disapointed as we are.

Me and my partner stayed here just to get some time to ourselves and we are deffinatly going to stay there again. The lady who owned Abbey lodge was so polite and carring to the point that she gave a better room then we were orrigionaly going to be in as they did not have many people there on that particular day. The secound thing was the beds were ever so comphy and finally the breakfast was brilliant. We did not have a single problem when staying here and I deffinatly recommend it to all ages.

Entire place reeks of cat urine and stinks. Dogs are barking downstairs. Outside the neighbours drink smoke and argue and litter. Bedding was greasy and stained - the old sheets worn so bad they have holes. Water in shower trickles out cold. Other 'guests' seemed like this was their prison discharge half-way-house. Rooms so small you literally have to crawl over you luggage to get back out the door. Broken wifi gave me an excuse to cancel remainder of booking but I'm still flabbergasted that I actually paid for two whole nights in such a nauseating, run-down cesspit. Avoid this place at all costs.

Booked in earlier without really looking at the room and by the time I was dropped off there later and pulled the bed covers back ....it was too late. The sheets were absolutely filthy. I didn't know what to do and settled in the end for sleeping on top of the bed in my clothes. Lesson learned - always check the sheets!!!
