“NO....not nice”
Reviewed 9 December 2008

What a strange place! This hotel takes impersonality to beyond the realms of comfort. Reasonable room at first glance but the lighting was poor, the toilet, which had no wash basin, was completely separate from the bathroom, so you have to walk around the corner, and open the double bathroom doors to wash your hands. I caught the side of my hand on the "designer" tap which, if you are not careful, closes onto your skin and pinches it. The menu for all parts of the hotel contained nothing that I found tempting and the dishes were incredibly over-priced. The cooked part of the breakfast buffet was over-cooked, over-tired and unappealing. I left this hotel feeling that they were so totally unaware of my presence that they might not have noticed if I hadn't settled my bill!

  • Liked — Nothing
  • Disliked — Separate Toilet with no wash basin. Unappealing over-priced menu.

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel and it was a great location. Close to the bars, town centre and shopping centre. Parking here was only £3 for 24hours so a great bargain. The rooms were a lot bigger than I was expecting and really clean. The beds were the niciest beds I have stayed in at a hotel, really comfy. Breakfast in the morning was fantastic, the food was hot and there was plenty of it. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

My Partner and i stayed here for a 1 night stay to get away from parenthood and to have a 'romantic' evening.

Iv been here once before fo rmy grandparents wedding aniversary, and the room was okay but the meal and everything else was terrible.

So as we only wanted a room, i thought as it's a fair price it would suitable.

The entrance is nice and clean and fairly impressive but unfortunatley the room was just awful, STAINED carpets, furniture CHEAP and FALLING APART.
Bathroom, STAINED plastic and BASIC. Ceiling FALLING DOWN in bathroom and generally dirty with STAINED toilet.

We were really disappointed to say the least, it ruined the abience of what could have been a really romantic night.

What ruined it the most was seeing the booklet that was in the room, that showed pictures of delux bedrooms, luxury beige marble bathrooms and general contempory style rooms, it was like a microwave meal, Looks good on the packaging but inside it's a disapointment.

Stayed only one night during Cowes Week, arriving late. Perfectly good as a short stop over, but for most people no more. 10mins walk to the Cowes ferry quay.

Like other Novotels, functional, predictable & pleasant. Nothing more, and fine for the price. Good bed & bed linen, and reasonably clean. Didn't eat dinner there. Breakfast OK.

Reasonably well run, although the front desk seemed to have trouble finding our booking, but sorted out a room.

Overall, very similar to the more expensive De Vere nearer the Quay, but cheaper.

Stayed here for two nights while attending a concert at the football ground. Appeared to be a popular hotel, was fully booked, convienient for cruise ships, ferries, close to town centre & shops.
Was expecting something like Premier Inn but was pleasantly surprised. Had a refurbished room ( smelt of paint ), new contemporary bathroom, separate loo, nice toiletries, powerful hairdryer, comfy bed, mini bar, tea/coffee & nice shortbread biccies. Flat screen TV, able to play ipod/mp3 player through TV, & radio channels/music was piped through to bathroom, so you could listen to music while in the bath ! Breakfast very good, plenty of choice of hot & cold food, single tables had fitted TV screens for lone travellers, didn't eat here in the evening, but had varied menu. Didn't have time to use sauna or pool.
A few minus points, our room 428 on the 4th floor, was at the end of a corridor at the corner of the building next to crossroads & traffic lights. the receptionist said we had a dock view, but this was mainly a view of containers waiting to be loaded onto ships & waste ground with a huge pylon. the containers were loaded during the night, & this was very noisey, also there were a lot of heavy frieght trains passing by at night. We had to have the window open as it was very hot & the a/c wasn't working. Windows were a bit odd one large pane that opened inwards, & an outer pane which could only be opened a couple of inches.
Hotel was clean & staff pleasant, I would stay here again, but would ask for a room on the car park side.

My husband and I stayed here for one night prior to boarding a cruise. I figured we'd get a standard budget hotel, but was surprised at a few things that made the stay better than expected.

The room was decent sized, especially for London standards. The toilet was located in a separate room from the bathroom, which included both a shower and tub. The furnishings included a flat screen tv and were quite stylish. The room was generally clean and comfortable. Front desk service was friendly and courteous, with a quick check-in.

Location of the hotel is great for proximity to shopping and the port (about a 5 min taxi ride). I would advise not eating at the Fridays near the hotel, as it was extremely slow service and just like the mediocre food you get here in the US chain. Unfortunately we were too late to eat at the mall and were too hungry to explore further options. Wish we had eaten at the hotel, as we did the following day for lunch. The dining room is modernly styled and the menu has a lot of choices. They offer three different sizes to their dishes, so you can order a small taste, appetizer size, or entree size depending on your appetite. It was a great way to try a couple of choices. We found the food to be quite tasty, much better than we hoped.

If you just need to check your email quickly, they have a public computer in the lobby for 10 minutes per pound. They will also hold your bags during the day (we had a several-hour wait between check-out and cruise boarding).

My only two complaints were that they gave us a room right by the elevator and across from the service room, which was kept open during the day and had staff going in and out. That made it a little bit noisy. The bed was also extremely firm. I think we would have had a problem sleeping on it for more than one night, but it was fine for our stay.

We would definitely stay here again and recommend it for similar reasons.

I stayed in this Novotel for two weeks while I was in Southampton for business and was joined by my partner in the final week.

Overall everything, the staff, accommodation, facilities, food etc was good, our only gripe was the 'high' speed internet service. Even though we had to pay extra on top of our room rate for the service, it was intermittant at best and would be better described as a 'low speed - if it feels like it,' internet service. Though we complained to the staff, they seemed unable to improve the service.

The food from the restaurant was good and the location close the West Quay (an excellent shopping complex in Southampton), Oxford st (good restaurants) and the Southamptom wharfs made it a very central place to stay.

If the windows were opened you would get road noise, but once closed there wasn't any noise at all. The rooms were spacious, we had a 'novation' room, which had a very nice bathroom, good shower, a desk, good storage and a couch. Overall everything very functional and comfortable.

  • Liked — spacious rooms, central-though urban location
  • Disliked — poorly performing internet service
