Sailed on the Queen Mary 2 from Southampton to New York in October 2009. Pre-cruise hotel was the Novotel by my own choice. About three blocks to the bus station (we took the National Express from Heathrow to Southampton). Just blocks away from the Mayflower dock. Taxi to the dock was about 6 pounds. Easy walking distance to a large mall with restaurants and shops. Tesco, Aldi, McDonalds, TGI's all within a 5 minute walk. Comfortable rooms although a bit dated. The lobby was under renovation. Bar and restaurant on site.

Took a chance on this hotel reading the reviews. The lobby looks nice. Our room was clean but shabby. Maid service was intermitent. The front desk missed an important wake up call and didn't even apologize. Phone calls and internet are super expensive and don't work well so you pay even more. In fact, the phone calls are charged at a rate higher than their notification. You are charged for breakfast, even if you didn't have it and you need to call and ask to have it removed from your bill. The air conditioning/heating don't work. You can open the window but the loud road noise will keep you awake at night. We had scaffolding outside our window. Made us feel unsecure. Even though it was a non-smoking room, the ventilation system carries the smell up to your room. The front desk seems to have an attitude and we did not feel welcome. (The manager was no where to be found)

The shower was funky as described in another post, but the spray was strong and lots of hot water.

So to sum it up, only stay here if:
1) You bring your own alarm clock for wake up calls
2) You don't need air condtioning or heating (or loud road noise doesn't bother you)
3) You like looking at scaffolding
4) You check your bill carefully
5) You don't need to use the phone or internet.
6) You pay no more than 60 pounds.

I know, based on this experience, we will never stay at a Novotel Hotel again. Better Value would be at a local holiday inn or such.

My husband and I stayed at the Novotel -Southampton for 2 nights prior to leaving for a cruise. The only upside to staying at this "hotel" was the location which was a) close proximity - about a 5 minute walk or less - to the train station b) within a 5 minute cab ride to where the cruise ship docks. If looking for something to do or places to eat other than a McDonalds and TGIF - there wasn't anything decent or quaint within a 15 minute walk. My husband and I are in average shape, mid 30's, and do an average amount of traveling per year. I mention this as I think it help qualifies my comments regarding the hotel: the room reminded me of a dorm room-small, in need of a good cleaning - the walls and carpet were splattered with stains, carpet was dirty and lifting at the edges, bedding and pillows heavily used and tattered. The toilet was separate from the sink and shower room - this was the only upside; however the toilet room was dingy. The sink; although modern, was very inefficient in draining - the sink water just sat in the basin. If all this hasn't turned you off, then the shower will. You need to climb up at least 2 feet into the shower, and once in the shower, there is no curtain or door to close. There is a 2 foot wide glass divider or basically 1/4 of a glass door that is actually hinged in the center for no real reason. It's not like you're going to angle the door around you because you wouldn't be able to lift your arms. Getting out of the shower requires great care because you have to ascend down the two foot drop onto a wet tile floor (why wet? absence of a proper shower curtain or door).

We spent one night here prior to a cruise. I researched hotels and B&Bs before deciding on the Novotel, and hoped it was a convenient location. It was!
There are 3 hotels that seem to share a very large parking area. Beyond the parking area are some shops, and there is a large mall within a 5 minute walk. The mall has a large food court, but the absolute best value for a quick dinner and pre-cruise breakfast is the IKEA store. It is a huge building; you can't miss it, and it's closer to the hotel than the mall! A large hot breakfast at IKEA was something like 1.50 GBP, and the view overlooked the harbour and our cruise ship.
The hotel had a large, boisterous dart tournament underway when we tried to check in mid-afternoon -- not an early check-in. Our room was not ready. This was a negative, but the hotel staff kept our luggage locked up in a back room, and we went to the mall. The room was clean. It included a refrigerator, ironing board, and standard amenities. I don't think there was AC, but with the window open, it was fine. The bathroom had new fixtures, the bed was comfortable. The couch was not comfortable for the 3rd person who slept on it.
The restaurant looked good, as did the bar, if a bit overpriced. We didn't eat there. I booked online and found a good deal, so was very pleased with our choice.
Honestly, if you don't have a lot of luggage, you could walk to the harbour in 15 minutes or so. We recommend it for a short stay.

OK. Reception area and restaurant very well done and the staff friendly and helpful. the location is convenient being opposite the station, close to the shops and the ships but nothing special as an hotel. For what was paid it represented very poor value for money but if you can get it at a reasonable price it would be acceptable. The room was of a good size, I liked the fridge/minibar as that was useful to put my own stuff in and the breakfast was quite nice, well presented and for those that cannot do without tv at breakfast, single booths with inbuilt tv's.

It is a place that I would not rush back to, I would prefer somewhere else that represented better value for money such as the Jury's hotel.

We were in room 105. The room was large, had the bonus of a comfortable settee, ironing board and iron, limited mini bar, beverage tray, safe and hairdryer. The staff happily gave us more coffee sachets on request.

The windows could only be opened a limited amount, as they opened onto a flat roof but the room was still cool enough, windows away from the flat roof opened fully. With the windows open we could hear a dull, low noise of some traffic but not enough to stop you sleeping and with the windows shut there was no noise whatsoever. The room had air conditioning.

The room and fixture and fittings were in very good condition, the bathroom and seperate loo were all very clean and fresh. The water was always hot and the taps very easy to control the temperature.

We were a bit concerned as room 105 faces the lift but the second inner room door cutting off the loo and beverage area from the sleeping area meant we didn't hear a sound from anyone coming to the floor via the lift.

The bed was large and comfortable, the duvet man made but the pillows were cheap and lumpy.

Breakfast was fine and included; small selection of very fresh Danish pastries, croissants, breads to toast, cereals, fresh fruit and yoghurts. Hot breakfast was hot and nicely cooked and included, sausages, bacon, eggs, rosti potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes, vegetarian sausages and scrambled egg.

The hotel is only a two minute walk from a TGI Fridays and MacDonalds and 4 minute walk from the large West Quay shopping centre (lovely large M&S and John Lewis) and 8 minutes from the main shopping street. It's only a 5 minute drive to the new cruise terminal.

We booked way in advance and got a great deal, only paying just over £70 for the room and that included breakfast (charged seperately this was approx £12 a head) Car parking is £3 a day.

All the staff we met were very cheerful, friendly and helpful especially the chap on reception, once he'd got over the shock of how many cases we had with us!!!

We will definitely go back the Novotel, as so far it's proved to be by far the best, most comfortable option for a pre cruise stop over.
