We paid £85 for 2 nights which was very reasonable and the hotel is centrally located with a car park (£3 pd). There are several issues though...firstly the hotel needs to be renovated as it looks very scruffy from the outside. We were allocated the wrong room on arrival but that was sorted out very quickly. We were on 2nd floor and although the room was clean the window rattled, an airvent was coming away from the wall, the bathroom (no bath just shower) needs upgrading (mould on the ceiling) and the bed had the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on. We didn't eat breakfast as we found there are plenty of establishments close by offering very reasonably priced breakfasts. We didn't expect luxury but a few more touches here and there would make a huge difference. Didn't use the bar so can't comment. Recpetion staff were pleasant and helpful. This hotel is ideal for stopovers (pre or post cruise) or business trips - but it is basic (but clean).

Room Tip: Quieter at the rear of hotel as front faces main road with lots of bars etc.

Booked The Star Hotel for one night so that we didn't have to drag our drunken selves home by taxi. The price was very good for a city centre and the hotel was ideally situated being in the centre of town. We asked for a quiet room and got one at the back of the hotel away from the pubs. The hotel is clean but very tired looking and the decor/furniture is stuck way back in the 80's!
The room was small, but the bed was comfortable and the shower room was clean and adequate. Our only complaint was that the walls were paper thin so it wasn't too much fun being woken in the middle of the night by the person in the next door room throwing up loudly! Luckily that didn't last too long and the rest of the night passed without incident.
Breakfast in the morning was buffet style but very tasty and the toast was freshly made by a nice Lithuanian lady. All in all for the price we paid this was exactly what we needed and the cooked breakfast helped to soak up the alcohol the morning after!

We was looking for a night away and found this hotel it was half the price as the others. I don't know what I was expecting from the reviews but I was surprised really. It does need a bit of updating but you wont find a better hotel for the money.
The location is excellent and the staff was nice, our room was big we only needed 1 double bed but got 2 so my son stayed in the other instead of his cot.
The sheets was clean and crisp, the room was clean.
I enjoyed my stay and will go back.

The location is ideal, within easy walking distance of the centre and the sea. There is parking at the rear. You can't reserve it, but the staff told me I could park without any problem on the street outside overnight and then I got a place in the carpark first thing the following morning.
The breakfast was delicious, with proper bacon, and you could help yourself to as much as you liked from the hot buffet, with waitress service of hot drinks and toast - a nice touch. I have rarely enjoyed a hotel breakfast so much.
There was a fun, friendly atmosphere and the hotel itself is definitely worth a look for its interesting history and royal connections.
I can't help but agree with some other reviewers that the hotel needs a serious upgrade, but if that happened, the cost would have to be reflected in the prices charged. As it is, the price for an ensuite room in a central hotel was excellent. My room was small but adequate, however my companion's room was much larger and had a much better ensuite facility - all at the same price.

Room Tip: Each room seems to be different in this very unusual hotel. Number 21 was much better than number 3.

Very pleased with the star hotel. Looks a bit run down from the front but the room was very nice. Staff were extremely helpful, there was a small initial issue with the room but this was resolved quickly and the staff offered complimentary drinks. The location is ideal for the town and found the stay comfortable. The breakfast provided was also very good value.

Boy are we pleased to have stayed once again at The Star Hotel, as we have recently stayed in other modern hotels and found them to be boring and very unfriendly. The Star Hotel is a pure delight to stay in. We love the history of this wonderful building and the sloping floors in our room make us laugh all the time. This hotel has character and that is something you don't get in the new modern hotels. Yes, maybe a little updating is needed, but the "shabby chick" style of the hotel makes it even more interesting.

Breakfast was great and staff very friendly. Highly recommended hotel for those who want a change from basic style boring hotels. We have recommended friends and family to stay here and they have loved it as well.

Room Tip: Take time to look around the hotel - if you have a room at the back, take a walk up the main stairs...

There were loose broken wires hanging out above the door frame, mould on the ceiling, bogeys on the 'artwork', the sheets were stained yellow and one will blood. The website says 'renovated' but this is the scariest, most dated place I have ever stayed. Very uncomfortable beds with massive springs sticking into you all night. Rude staff.

Room Tip: None, they're all terrible
