A group of us stayed at the Star the night before heading off to the IOW Festival this year. On approaching the building the outside of the building was in reasonable condition, however on entering the building it was immediately clear that this was a building in dire need of a complete refurbishment. There was an old musty smell in the hotel reception area (if you could call it that), then on allocation of keys etc.. we then headed into the rabbit warren of a building, the carpets were worn completely through in places, the wall paper falling off walls and generally the place was not clean, tidy or in a reasonable state of repair. Our room had a four poster bed!!! wow I hear you say, but on actually getting on the bed the mattress was so thin or so old maybe you could feel the bed support beneath. We then changed rooms, which had a more adequate mattress, the room was tatty, the TV didn't work and the bathroom was again in need of repair in many places. In the morning (bearing in mind we were heading off to a festival) I was going to enjoy my last proper shower for a day or so, but there was no hot water!! Long story short we then had to be taken across the hotel to a separate shared bathroom to have a shower!!! Breakfast was adequate and the staff apologetic, but it is clear the owners cannot afford to refurbish the place. I have stayed in worse B&B's in my time but this has to be the worse Hotel I have ever stayed in in the UK. It may be cheap but it is for a reason, do yourself a favour and spend another £20 or so on a decent hotel.

Where to begin? The only things I can honestly say I like about the star were the staff, the location and the price of the room. The hotel itself is in dire need of refurbishment. The carpets are old and sticky, both in the halls and the room.
The windows are filthy, inside and out. The window in the bathroom looked onto a multi storey car park and it wasn't tinted or anything.
The bed itself is lumpy and hard, with pillows so flat and uncomfortable that sleeping on the two provided was an impossibility, we ended up rolling towels for support.
The facilities offered were average. However, the mugs were old and stained, one with lipstick, the tea bags were old and not packaged, damp and mouldy.
There was no hair dryer the room, there was an iron but no ironing board.
To get to the room you had to walk through a myriad of narrow halls and up flights of stairs, not great If u had large luggage.
You could have walked through those halls blindfolded however, as each hall had its own distinct smell, which included, overly strong air freshner, mould, damp and B.O.
Over all the hotel was a let down. In comparison to other hotels in that area it is well under par.
It would not be somewhere that I would be in a hurry to stay in again

Stayed here on the queens jubilee holiday to see the Cunard 3 queens.for 2 nights.
It may be an old building but so what !
Service ,food and location are all very good, and were else could you park for 24 hours in a city centre for £3..
Will stay here as always on our frequent visits to Southampton.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the back of the hotel if you dont want disturbing by pubs and clubs

Paid £40 for a single room (room only) and expected the worst. What I got was a pleasant surprise - extremely efficient check in from very friendly staff. Single room was spotless - ok size, dressing table and wardrobe, TV with some digital channels, comfy bed, tea / coffee making facilities and a fair sized en suite shower room. I was in room 10 which was at the back of the hotel backing onto a road but hardly any noise.

The outside of the hotel and reception area are quite quaint - it's on a pretty quiet street with a few pubs and take aways with cash machines etc. It's about 20 min walk to Southampton Central station - or £5 in a taxi. Also about 15 min walk from the Mayflower Theatre. Right near town centre.

Whatever I asked for (taxi to be called / info etc) the staff were happy to help.

Sure the decor of the room / corridors could be update about if one was being picky - but for me good service, value for money and a comfy room is more important than a lick of paint. If you want 5* modern chic then this isn't the place for you, but if you want good service, a good location at a very reasonable price then give this place a whirl.
