The Star Hotel is well situated on the High Street and conveniently close to the docks. It is a budget hotel, the layout is quite quirky and the décor is rather dark and tired. But the staff are friendly and helpful. The reception is built around a 200 year old courtyard with an archway entrance which gives a dark but interesting ambiance. The room we stayed in was clean and spacious but it would have benefitted from some redecoration and refurbishment. We had an excellent breakfast, quite lavish and at a very reasonable cost with excellent personable service. We came to Southampton by train before taking a cruise and the hotel is only a short taxi ride from the station and the docks. It was good value for a budget hotel, certainly better than a nearby "quality" hotel that we stayed at prior to our last cruise. I noticed that the car park was quite small (as you would expect from a High Street hotel) but there were some free spaces when we arrived in the afternoon.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room. The air conditioning unit from the building next door disturbed me in the nig...

Booked the hotel for an overnight stay prior to joining a cruise ship the following morning. It was an absolute disgrace. The room we were given can be best described as dilapidated, the bathroom was filthy, the furniture looked as though it had come from "Steptoe's Yard", the whole room needed redecorating and certainly looked nothing like the photographs that appear on the booking website. Unfortunately we did not arrive until the early evening otherwise I would have refused to pay the bill and gone elsewhere. Describes itself as hotel and restaurant but at 7.30pm we could not even get a bar snack. The only saving graces were its location, the good breakfast and the friendliness of the staff who were serving it. All in all a hotel to be avoided as it is definitely not worth a single star rating.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel.

This is a terrible hotel. Anyone who describes it as "rundown chic" or "having character" has always stayed in a cheap hostel or under bridges. There was not any redeeming feature that I can point to. The paint was peeling off the window, the door handle was that dirty that neither my wife or I wanted to touch it with bare hands. The phone was beige but this was only evident after a close inspection. We simply placed it in a bedside drawer so as not to inadvertently touch it. We arrived late and had no choice but to stay the night. Next morning we discovered there was not any hot water.I started calling other hotels. We advised the management we were leaving and were promptly advised there were no refunds ( we had paid for three days). I didn't care, I could not stay there. The pictures on Booking.com are not representative of this hotel. Hope this saves someone from this trap.

This is a very tired old hotel, not made better by the fact that it's not cleaned properly and probably some of the rooms are past cleaning they are so shabby & dirty :( It's a shame this place is still pretending to be a grand old hotel because it is so far from that these days. I had dirty cutlery on the table each morning at breakfast which shows a massive lack of care from the staff as clearly no one is checking this when they lay the tables. The breakfast was ok though, not great but a reasonable choice of cereals, and tinned grapefruit segments. Cooked was the usual, with very cheap sausages and tomatoes. The room was creaky, dusty & had peeling wallpaper so need I say more....although the bed sheets were perfectly clean, and beds were made up each day. Towels were plentiful, although no bathmat. Toiletries should be provided, not just soap. Even the cheapest of hotels manages a small bottle of shower gel these days! So all in all I wouldn't recommend you spend your money here as as there are plenty of really nice hotels in Southampton that are 10 times better than this one, and much cheaper.

Stayed here last year - key to our room was missing, ie double-booked and they forgot to book our taxi to docks in morning. Leaving it too late to book elsewhere we had to stay here again this year. Stayed for one night before cruise and booked 14 nights parking. Car park full on arrival and had to go on street for first night with no promise of a space over the cruise. Room was adequate, whole place needs redecorating, new furnishings and a good clean. Mouldy lino in bathroom, wardrobe you couldn't open because of the bed. Central location (noisy) but found great Turkish cafe nearby which made up for the stress of the parking issue. Staff at hotel could do with some customer service training - too much shrugging of shoulders and passing the buck going on instead of apoligising and seeing what they could do for us. Ended up parking 18 month old car in a no parking zone at hotel and came back to a dented door. Won't ever stay here again - it's the worst hotel we've ever stayed in and that's saying something!

DO NOT STAY HERE. We stayed here for 1 night and went for location. We were visiting a family member in port from a cruise ship. We should have stayed a million miles from here. The front of the hotel is good, the staff were freindly and helpful and breakfast was reasonable. As for everything else it is disgusting. Our room was filthy, there was thick dust everywhere paint chipped off the window frames and bare wood. The bathroom was filthy and the toilet even had unflushed paper in it when we arrived uhhhh. The furniture was very old and shabby and there was no way I would have put any thing in the drawers or wardrobe. There was an iron in the wardrobe where you would have used i will never know as there was no flat surface or an ironing board. For the extortionate price we paid for this pit you would have expected there to be a hairdryer and complimentary toiletries we got to little soaps!!!!! The teabags were just loose on a tray not in wrappers. The only decent thing was that the sheets were clean but i would not have dared to look at the mattress. Overall this is a dreadful hotel that has the cheek to charge 3-4 star prices for an unstarred status. it needs to be shut down and gutted. Please please dont stay here I implore you .

Room Tip: dont sleep here
