“Great location, good value, helpful staff”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

We stayed here for one night and left our car there whilst we went on a cruise. We'd looked at the hotel before and so knew it was central for looking around Southampton. The car park is in its own private courtyard so very handy. The building is very old and rambling - full of character - and although a little tired and in need of some TLC it is comfortable. We were also told that some work is planned to make improvements. The staff were really helpful and thoughtful. Indeed, we had a bit of an emergency on leaving and the staff were able to resolve it very quickly for us so that our holiday wasn't spoiled. They didn't need to do this for us as it didn't involve them but they went out of their way to make arrangements so that our minds were settled. Our room was comfortable and quiet which gave us a good night's sleep before we got up for breakfast served in a large dining room without being rushed. Breakfast was generous and set us up for our day very well. We've used several hotels in Southampton, all differing areas and costs but for us this was a good choice. The price was fair for what we had and we'll certainly return.

The breakfast here was the worst thing I've ever had put in front of me. Imagine a greasy spoon that clearly never cleans out its pans. The coffee (surely easy?) was sub discount supermarket own brand. In the rooms the bedding and mattress seemed to have been bought from an army surplus specialising in discomfort. The toilet roll may as well have been fag paper. The free wifi requires a call to the night porter to reel off pi to you over the phone. The television refused to operate outside of a 2 foot radius. Beds squeaked. Bathrooms stunk. Maintenance was no where to be found. At breakfast mass confusion ensued when the staff had parked in the overflow spaces and had blocked three cars in.

Hideous.

The first sight of the hotel gives a clue to the state of this hotel - paint flaking from the outside wall - and the interior is no different. A plaque in reception says that Benjamin Franklin stayed there in 1781, and that was probably the last time that it had a lick of paint. Carpets worn and threadbare, smell of smoking. I stayed in room 46, opening the door was like going back in time to the 50's. Dismal, damp smell, old wardrobe, peeling paint on windowsill, tiny radiator so that the room was chilly. I was woken at about 5am by banging from the radiator as heating came on.
The only redeeming point were the staff, all of whom were excellent - friendly, helpful, but surely must be embarrassed at having to explain why it's nothing like the website. Not cheap, either (£64 for 1 night, small double room with breakfast).
It needs someone to come along and spend a lot of money giving it a thorough makeover.

We spent one night here on a Saturday and were quite apprehensive after reading the reviews. I must say though it's not all bad. Ok it doesn't have the glitz and glamour of a new 5 star hotel but our room was spotless and the bed was more comfy than the one I own, and the breakfast was excellent. The only sad part was the hotel which you could imagine was quite grand in it's heyday is now very tired looking. The reception area is still decorated in the early 1900 style, which I liked as it showed the hotels character and you could imagine the horse and carriages going past. It was a shame going down the corridors to find my room, that the decor had changed to old fashioned b&b. I would stay here again though as it was good value and the location was perfect for what we wanted.

This hotel is perfect If you are a movie producer looking to reshoot the 1960 Psycho film, or if you are a kid wanting to spook your friends by telling scary stories about this s-hole of a place.

As an hotel, it just doesn't work.

My room had a single bed, a small desk and a sink. The bathroom? There was none. Well, there was one, at the other side of the hotel that I could use. The receptionist assured me it was my own private bathroom. But after inspecting this bathroom, I realised that it had no shower.

It's ok if a hotel is run down and old, but you kind of expect certain things when you pay for a room. A shower would be one of them.

Needless to say I got the hell out of there and moved to the Blue Keys hotel (excellent hotel and about the same price)

If you want to live close to the city, and you are on a budget, I would just go for the Dolphin hotel down the street. Same price, but so much nicer.

The Star Hotel is clearly not a first-rank accommodation. It is situated in an old building in High Street, Southampton, a small area miraculously spared by the WWII bombing. Such historical heritage could definitely be worth enhancing by the business; instead, they left it to its destiny. The facade looks pretty ugly, and it is falling apart, while inside, the carpet throughout makes things worse, especially when it comes to pull your luggage through the numerous stairs (no lift available, for what I could see). That said, the rooms were decent, and looked clean to me. The staff was extremely helpful, and the manager allowed many of us to leave our luggage in their premises and enjoy the sunny day out even after we checked out, and that, for my necessities, made up for the everything else.

Room Tip: Rooms too far from reception don't get good wi-fi connection.
