Reviewed 25 July 2010

We booked this very last minute as we realised we could get a "four poster" room for the same cost as a room in a travelodge. Really wasn't worth the money! The bed was very creaky and kept me awake all night. The room was very basic - literally just the bed and a tiny table which just about fitted the kettle. The one mirror was in the darkest corner with no plug points nearby and the cupboard looked like it was going to fall apart at any minute.
The bathroom was dark, and the extractor made so much noise it was impossible to have a conversation!
I looked under the bed when I woke up and realised that it was held together by a piece of 4x2 timber and the props that should be in place had fallen over and one was hidden behind the radiator!
On the positive side breakfast was nice and plentiful and the staff were fairly helpful, the location was good as it was right in centre of town.
I will not be booking in here again

ok for one night but only as a stopover- a bed for the night. interiors reminded me of my grandma's old granny flat. pretty drab but for the price (booked last minute so likely reduced) it was ok. breakfast was nice.
not quiet as on the main high st. we were on the high street side and there is a nightclub a couple doors down.not recommended for a romantic break! your dream hotel it ain't!

Stayed the one night here, glad that was our plan. Not much to write about, but if you want a very very basic cheap budget 'Hotel' room when this is your answer. Very basic amenities but you get what you pay for though the sheets were dirty and there was mould in the bathroom, the bed dipped into the middle so you felt like you were rolling into a pit everytime you moved. Inconsiderate late night revellers in the corridor but you get that everywhere.
Honeymooners & senior citizens DO NOT book here!!
The breakfast was good - the only positive thing I can say really, though as I mentioned earlier, it's a very basic budget stopover.
Never saw the bar open.

the staff were helpful and polite the room was nice but slightly dated, beds and pillows very comfy and clean although we stayed in a none smoking room the room did smell of stale smoke which was quite dissapointing, but we were only there for one night so not to worry. although the hotel is near a busy night club and next door to a witherspoons pub we didnt hear any of the noise.

I spent a night at the Star before departing on a cruise. For GPB 45 I wasn't expecting luxury, and I did get a clean, mostly comfortable room in a location that was good for exploring Southampton before I had to leave. My room was in the back, so I didn't have any of the noise problems others have mentioned. My mattress wasn't as comfortable as mine at home, but it was fine. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Found the room was dirty, the pillows had black damp all over the pillow cases, the mattress was a lot smaller than than the base of the bed, dried soap marks left in bathroom, toilet hinges very rusty and dirty, a hotel from hell - complained to manager and all we were told was she didn't realise, as she was supposed to be the manager then she should know this as it would be her job, felt this was just an excuse as the communal areas were very tatty. we knew this was a 2 star hotel but it was so dirty that we both felt that it didn't deserve any star rating at all. we would never return to this hotel even if it was offered free as it is so bad.

Booked four poster room as part of partners theatre trip, we managed to lose our way on way to hotel and reception staff were most helpful in giving us directions to get us back on track.
Having got to hotel and checked in I'm afraid the actual hotel wasn't as welcoming as the people staffing it.

We are normally people that say that people who write on these sites go of their way looking for faults but sorry to say didn't take much looking, this hotel is in serious need of refurbishment! there were heavily stained carpets in the room, staining on the walls, found to be very dusty, the bed was a little on hard side although that is just a minor niggle.
