The City Art Gallery is situated on the upper level of the Library. The attraction is very badly signposted however, so much so that there isn't even a proper sign on the building itself and you could walk by thinking it's just the library. Having overcome this minor inconvenience you are greeted by some stunning paintings of many modern artist and some not so recent too (14C altar piece). One of the highlights must be Burne-Jones's cartoons of Perseus, others include a delightful painting by Tristram Hillier and much more. Feast your eyes in this gallery and then have a coffee and cake in the cafe below - a brilliant way to while away a couple of hours in Southampton
