“Good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2014 via mobile

We were a large party of 22. Camping is in a good location, pitches are huge, toilets never run out of toilet paper, showers very hot, shop and take away on site. We had some problems checking in and since the staff was unable to sort things out straight away they keept asking me to go to reception ....6-7 times:((( We will not return because of that. Rock pegs are a must!!!

Firstly, to anyone reading the negative reviews, context is required. This is a back to basics campsite, in the middle of the New Forest. For 3 nights over Easter Bank holiday (i.e. peak season), it cost £83.

Facilities were perfectly good - clean toilets, hot showers, decent shop and friendly staff. The camping pitches were great if you looked and used your imagination. We were able to find an excellent little spot, behind trees / bushes and it was excellent. It did rain, but that didn't dampen our spirits!

For people wanting home from home, this isn't for you, but who goes camping for that? If you want an old school camping experience, book now, it's brilliant! I had the best 3 nights sleep I have had for months.

PS my wife is 18 weeks pregnant and loved every minute of it. Can't be that bad, can it?

This old air field is a great place for children to ride their bikes and explore in the woods.
Don't come here for a peaceful stay or if you are looking to avoid children!
The pitches are great with plenty of space and the staff are helpful and friendly.
It takes practise to master the showers and don't try getting dressed in the cubicle as everything gets wet. They are never immaculate due to the large number of children and teenagers constantly using them but are hot and wet and so do the job!

We have just returned from our stay at Holmsley, we were very disappointed with the facilities. One block was closed. We had to ride our bikes to the nearest ablution block. As it got busier there was no hot water and the facilities became very untidy. People were having to drive to use the facilities. When we asked the staff why the ablution block nearest us was closed they just told us that it was due to Staffing problems. Unacceptable Holmsley. I was even more disappointed when they charged us £10 PER DAY for our Gazebo even though no body could have used the space as it was so close to our tent. I have done some research and other Sites only charge £5. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Been to Holmsley for the first time this year and we were very disappointed with the facilities. The location is superb and the staff are friendly and helpful but the facilities are the worst they have been for the 20 years we have been staying there. The shower was fluctuating from lukewarm to cold with about 30 seconds of warm water at the start, wouldn't have minded on a hot sunny day but its still a bit chilly at night and a warm shower would have been lovely. When we are paying top prices we expect a hot shower at least. It's only the start of the camping season and already most of the sink plugs have gone, they need to find a solution to this problem, other campsite's manage to over come this successfully. It's such a shame because it's a really lovely family campsite, the kids have great fun riding around on their bikes, and the old runways are good for that.

We have just returned from a five night stay at Holmsley and as someone who had grown up in the area, I know just how beautiful the area is.Let's be honest, the New Forest is hard to beat no matter what. Added to that are the places in the near vicinity which make it a very attractive proposition for any caravanner or camper.

The shop on the site is more than adequate and is staffed by very friendly wardens. Being a bit out of season, we found the site to be nice and quiet and the facilities were cleaned regularly. They are, or at least the ones near us were in need of upgrading becauase of annoying things like the showers bere button operated and only ran for a few seconds before stopping so it was a constant battle to get a decent sort of shower. The older nature of the blocks were such that it is difficult to make them more appealing I know. The most annoying thing was that in the washing up area, whilst there were plenty of sinks, onll three of them had plugs so we had to queue to do our washing up to either wait for one of the three sinks to become free or wait for a kind person to lend us one whilst they were rinsing off.

I know that the owners of the site would say that it is only because of campers that there were only three plugs, but the point is, human nature being what it is, it is not beyong the wit of man to install sinks that have securely fitted plugs, or indeed fit plugs tio existing sinks that are secure.

Whilst I would return if pushed but only if other nearby sites are not available.

Have been to many campsites in the new forest and we have never found one as perfect as this for setting, standard of pitches or friendliness of staff.
Small reception/ shop is all that you need with added bonus of takeaway food with large picnic area a outside.
Will without doubt be revisiting this site.
This site is excellent .!!

Next to the site there is a large heathland which is fantastic for a spot of nature watching. Free-roaming ponies, cattle and deer are frequent visitors, and you might see squirrels, badgers and foxes if you are lucky. New Forest woodlands are thought by the locals to be at their very best in the autumn, during the annual Pannage season. At this time the forest turns crimson and gold and echoes to the sound of rutting deer. Holmsley is close to several stunning beaches including Barton on Sea, with Bournemouth and Poole just a drive away. Premium pitches are available onsite, and there are also toilets, showers and a launderette available. Please remember to bring your rock pegs for this site.
