Holmsley Campsite

We spent a couple of nights at Holmsley, a group of 22 made up of 11 kids aged 5-9 and 11 Adults. We were greeted and checked in by friendly, helpful staff. Good facilities with plenty of hot water. Perfect site for the children who spent most of the weekend exploring on their bikes, messing about in the stream and playing games, we didn't see that much of them :)
We tried out the take away which is fine if you fancy a night off the cooking and are happy with pizza's, chips, nuggets etc...
Beautiful surroundings and your tents aren't burgled by the ponies

We stayed at Holmsley over the bank holiday weekend (24th-27th) May. Well we were meant to stay on Sat 24th but they couldn't accept us as the pitches were waterlogged. They obviously cant help the weather but we were disappointed that this judgement call was only made at 10.30 am on the day we were meant to arrive and were already on our way and obviously we lost a whole day then as we spent sunday pitching instead of going out and enjoying the forest. Would have been better if they could have let people know earlier. Also disappointing that nearly 2 weeks after our trip we are still waiting for our refund!
The shower and toilet facilities were clean but were quite a distance from our pitching area. Not ideal when you have young children. When you press the button on the showers the water only runs for about 10-15 seconds if that. You basically had to shower with one hand while pressing the shower buttons with the other. I understand why showers are set up this way to reduce water wastage from being left on but surely 60 seconds would be OK?! The showers need some kind of curtain between the shower and the door so you can hang your clothes up and get changed in the cubicle without getting everything soaked.

The most worrying thing was the drinking water. One of the taps I went to use was completely flooded (drainage overwhelmed) and surrounded by a huge muddy puddle. The tap had a rubber pipe attached but this was so long it was left laying in the muddy water! Not good at all! And because it was so flooded you couldn't actually hold a water container up to the tap without standing in the puddle or using the pipe.

Overall, the site was ok, lots of space for the kids to ride bikes and run around and the area is lovely. I am in 2 minds whether I would stay there again or try one of the other sites in the New Forest area as they weren't exactly cheap and there are some basic customer service and facility issues.

Great location, ideal for getting together with a group of friends with kids. Bikes are welcome too. Facilities were all in good working order and appeared recently renovated. Lovely place. Bit wet when we went but managed to find a small island!

The only factor that prevented an excellent rating was the attitude of one member of staff. We were a large group (25) and ordered takeout one evening from the shop on site. There was some confusion over the order which can happen, but the attitude of the woman serving us in response to reasonable conversation was rude and unacceptable, with no apology for the confusion offered. She then proceeded to be rude to the next customers who included U12's. We understand the pressures of certain situations, but that is the skill of customer service, to placate the situation. We British just don't get it sometimes!!

Just returned home Wednesday 28th may from a 5 day girly camping holiday. Been coming to this site for many years and still love it! Unfortunately the weather was wet wet wet! But still had a great time. Facilities excellent and staff friendly and helpful. Looking forward to our next visit.

Stayed here for 5 days last week. Don't worry about the bad reviews, this was a great place to stay.

+
- Great location
- walking and cycling straight form the site
- great customer service
- clean and spacious toilets and showers
- hot water and toilet paper (if you
- takeaway at the weekends with tasty fish n chips
- good shop on site to buy supplies as well as tea and coffee
- great for kids - playground and loads of space to run around and ride bikes
- electric pitches
- the site was fully booked on the Sat and it did not feel packed out
- if you arrive late you can just check in the next morning
- decent price

-

- this site is next to an airport and main roads! so bring ear plugs or it will be noisy at night. this isn't something that the campsite owners can do anything about though obviously and it will affect most campsites in the area.
- no lights at night so bring a touch to walk to the toilets
- the playground doesn't have swings! what kids playground has no swings!!?

I would stay again! this is one of the only campsites in the area with full facilities and we didn't really have any problems.

We were a large party of 22. Camping is in a good location, pitches are huge, toilets never run out of toilet paper, showers very hot, shop and take away on site. We had some problems checking in and since the staff was unable to sort things out straight away they keept asking me to go to reception ....6-7 times:((( We will not return because of that. Rock pegs are a must!!!

Firstly, to anyone reading the negative reviews, context is required. This is a back to basics campsite, in the middle of the New Forest. For 3 nights over Easter Bank holiday (i.e. peak season), it cost £83.

Facilities were perfectly good - clean toilets, hot showers, decent shop and friendly staff. The camping pitches were great if you looked and used your imagination. We were able to find an excellent little spot, behind trees / bushes and it was excellent. It did rain, but that didn't dampen our spirits!

For people wanting home from home, this isn't for you, but who goes camping for that? If you want an old school camping experience, book now, it's brilliant! I had the best 3 nights sleep I have had for months.

PS my wife is 18 weeks pregnant and loved every minute of it. Can't be that bad, can it?

Holmsley is a campsite steeped in history. Indeed, the aircraft hard standings and taxiways are now the campsite roads and parking spots! The campsite is close to the rural villages of Burley and Bransgore, with shops including a bakery, chemist, and chip shop. The site is predominantly grass, meaning there is a lot of space for the children to play. It also offers direct access to forest walks and safe cycling tracks; ideal for exploring the local flora and fauna with the whole family. Onsite there is a fully equipped shop that sells a wide range of groceries, camping essentials and games to ensure that your holiday runs as smoothly as possible. There is also an excellent take away; perfect after a busy day exploring the forest and when you want to put your feet up in your tent and relax. Opening time will vary throughout the season. This campsite offers both hardstanding and grass pitches with the opportunity for electric hook-up. There are also toilets and wash facilities available on site. ... more   less
