Reviewed 11 June 2011

We got a good 'advanced' booking deal so opted for an executive room, which included breakfast. We were in room 116 on the first floor, facing the front ie overlooking a busy roundabout and the De Verre Grand hotel. We were again only using it for a one night stay before a cruise.

We actually went back to check we'd been given an executive room on first seeing room 116, as we were so underwelmed by what greeted us! The bedrom was ok, bigger than an average room but not by much. Bed seemed small for a double but was comfortable. Pillows had man made filling and were uncomfortable and the duvet was very thin and man made. Curtains were replaced with Japanese themed closing bamboo coloured screens which certainly kept out the light! The window opened, you could hear traffic noise all the time, all night but there was ac in the room if you prefered to keep the window closed.

There was a trouser press, safe (so high up in the wardrobe I could hardly reach it!) very basic and light weight iron with ironing board, dressing gowns, hairdryer, empty mini bar (it was filled on request), and beverage tray with very small kettle. The tv was lovely and large.

The bathroom was so small! Nice quality towels and toiletries but, in my opinion, very low quality, harsh, scratchy recyled loo paper and tissues - really cheap looking.

The corridor on the first floor was so drab, dark and dingy looking you would think you'd got off on a service floor not one with guest rooms along it!

Breakfast was ok, very friendly, cheerful staff. Limited fresh fruit, cereals, hot food - all of which was actually hot and nicely presented. Very cheap thin bread for toast. Delicious croissants, cheese portions, tinned fruit. As I say, all ok but not special.

Wifi connection was stupidly overpriced at £5 an hour so we didn't use it. Why do UK hotels do this when on the continent it's usually free. It's their loss not the guests!

The Executive room was better than the standard one we had on our first visit but compared to other hotel Execcutive rooms we've been in, it was not up to standard and we wont be going back. We've got better deals in standard rooms for less money in several hotels in Southampton and we'll stick with those from now on.

We had a lovely large room on a buy one get one free offer which made this hotel affordable and on the money.

The reception staff were incredible and so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Thank you

The room was clean and the view over the harbour was lovely at night. It is by a very busy road so there is some noise. Very handy for the boat to the Isle of Wight and the parking is free.

The kids ate free so saved a fortune and the food was good. The waiting staff again were lovely.

Its only downsides

Its a bit dated and very noisy road

overall if you get a deal then worth the money.

We had a very nice room, really clean, but on sunday morning ,7-30 some-one decided to start work with an electric drill some-where on our floor, you don't need this when you are on a week-end away

Handy location for the ferry and a 10 minute walk from the city centre. 1960s building done out in a kind of bright but slightly irritating Ikea style. Rooms were not particularly big but fine for a night's sleep. Felt a bit like a fancy university hall of residence. Dated corridors but at least everywhere was clean. Free parking.
Staff were a mixed bag: some quite cheerful but a few blank stares from the others.
I felt it overpriced but maybe that's because there was a cruise ship in and it was full up.

We stayed at this hotel, which we booked last minute, for one night prior to a cruise from Southampton. It is very well placed for both the Mayflower and Ocean terminals, as well as for the Isle of Wight ferries. In fact one of our rooms overlooked the cruise ship we were sailing on!
The rooms we had were a good size although the bathrooms were a little small. Yes it's a chain hotel so there is no real character but then that's not what we were looking for. The beds were extremely comfortable and it was nice and quiet so we all had a good night's sleep.
I hurt my leg two days before we were due to stay so arrived in a wheelchair but the rooms were still big enough to manoeuvre around and the staff, particularly at breakfast, went out of their way to help me. I didn't catch any of the names of the breakfast staff but would like to mention them as they were particularly helpful
Breakfast was very good with a wide choice of hot and cold foods. The food in the evening was of good quality and generous portions too. There is a large free carpark and a leisure complex as well as free internet access. The hotel is also well-placed for the city centre.
If you want somewhere clean and comfortable to get a good night's sleep then I would recomment this hotel. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a front-facing room

Stayed one night 22 April. Rude "blank stare" reception staff, tired room without even a fridge, same old smelly corridors and 1960's frayed carpet. Well located - great view of the docks and a short walk to IoW ferry etc. Good breakfast with cheery breakfast waiting staff (10/10 ladies). Same "blank stare" on check out from some bimbo whose nails were more important. Rip off GBP103 on IHG's "best internet rate guarantee" even though we're sure tour groups are only paying GBP45 a room!! What's the point of being in the Priority Club when you get so disrespected????

Overall its only a 4/10.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere
