“Greatest place to stay if Cruising out of Southampton”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel a couple times when sailing out of Southampton. The gate to the port is just beside the Hotel parking lot. When looking out of our hotel room window, it was unbelievable how close the ship was to the hotel. We ate breakfast in the hotel (make sure you book a room with breakfast included), left the hotel and pulled our bags about 100 yards to the first building we came to and turned them in to go on to the ship. We then walked about another 100 yards and entered the terminal for check-in. Like I said, Greatest place to stay if going on a cruise.

Stayed the weekend of the 9th February, hotel is just outside the old town walls and has a great view from the upper floors.
Rooms were model with flat screen TV and very clean, room service visited on both days we were there.
Front desk staff are friendly and willing to help/give local advice. Car parking on site @ £7.50 for 24hrs.
Walk into the centre via the archway adjacent the hotel and have a drink in the Duke of Wellington with its real log fire. (Good stop off both in and out of the centre)
Good shopping centre with loads of new buildings and large pedestrianised area. (The centre is about 10 minute walk from the hotel
Anglers need only walk across the road to town quay to fish into deep water at any state of the tide.
Don't both with Oxford Street or the Waterfront as it’s full of overpriced chain restaurants and bars. (£3.75 per pint)
Highly recommended is the Red Lion with fantastic home cooking at reasonable prices, lots of history in the place too, once held a court for Henry 5th prior to leaving for Agincourt.
Overall Southampton was a great place to spend the weekend and will return to this hotel again.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 8th floor (Room 801) corner room with views up the estuary. Lifts were quick

On my first night's stay I got a room adjacent to the lifts (constant noise) with a room that had a terrible racket coming from the bathroom extract system.
I changed to another room which was quieter but was too hot and no adjustment could be made.
The bed was comfortable and the large tv picture was good. However the carpet showed several stains and the bathroom was not in the best of condition.
Having to pay £7 each day to park is now a big disincentive to stay there again. You have to get an exit ticket from reception to get out and on my second morning there was an almighty queue and it took ages to get the ticket.
So don't expect to make a quick exit if you are late for an appointment.
The buffet breakfast was good with a good selection of hot & cold food.

My apologies about the noise from the lift & the extract system. The sitaution regarding the queue to get out of the car park must have been frustrating, normally the car park barriers work very efficiently.Thank you for your kind comment regarding the breakfest

Booked on line, on arrival ( 10.00 p.m) check in no problem, staff were OK. Small bar which is expensive but again staff were pleasant enough. Rooms have seen better days, on the plus side the TV are large. Towels in the bathrooms are thin and need replacing. No free Wi- Fi, didn't have breakfast but on check out had to pay for the carpark, which was a shock. On the night I stayed it got foggy, I sleep with the windows open ( not that you can open them much) but all night had the fog horn sound every 15 mins on Southampton Water, but not alot anyone can do about that. Jury is out on whether I would stay again, as there are plenty of other hotels in the city to try.

Thank you for your comments, your comentsregarding the team are appreciated. We try very hard to keep ahead of all the decoration requirements in the hotel. The exterior noise from the fog horn on Southampton Water must have been frustrating.
Hope we can welcome you back in the future

Stayed there recently for a business trip. Hotel was nice, wish the rooms were as nice as the restaurant though. It's a short walk into the old part of town where there were a few nice pubs. Ate in the restaurant a couple times and the food was pretty good and decently priced. Room was roomy (helped it was just me), bed was comfortable but the bathroom needed some work. There were some loose tiles in the shower and the toilet had trouble flushing. Also didn't like that the room didn't have an iron, luckily clothes weren't that bad. I know I have more trips coming up to that region and will stay there again. After making some inquiries, I made my own taxi arrangements with Southampton Taxi Services (www.southamptontaxiservices.com). Very well priced and very good service.

The rooms are badly requiring refurbishment. The heating in my room was very tempremental. Every day I returned the heating was off and the room extremelly cold. There is no heating in the bathroom and the bathroom floor is tiled, making it really cold. The Health club has old machines and also requires refurbished.

We have stayed at this hotel on several previous occasions before embarking on a cruise. We have always had a good experience, which is why we always return.
However, this time we had an experience in the restaurant which was incredible. After a series of errors which bordered on the comical we were offered 20% off our food bill. Considering one of the errors was serving my husband's meal to another table and then removing it and plonking it down on our table (after the other diner had eaten some of it!) we were alittle surprised at this response. We did not wish to argue in the middle of the restaurant and so accepted. To be fair, we were hardly in our room when the hotel manager phoned to offer abject apologies and gave us a full refund and offered a bottle of wine. He considered our experience to be well below the standards they would expect.
All well and good, but obviously there are staff training and supervision issues here.
We will stay here again. Surely this could not happen twice!

I have read your comments regarding the waiting staff delivering your meal to the wrong table. This is a mistake for which I must offer my sincere apologies. My team do try very hard to give the best possible standards of service & are given encouragement to sort out issues therefore I am pleased the my Food Service Manager was able to allow the cost off the bill & offer the wine.
I hope that we will be able to welcome you back to the hotel when you are next on a cruise
