“A good overnight stay prior to a cruise”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

This is a good hotel if you need to stay overnight prior to a cruise. Am Priority Member and contacted the hotel before arriving asking for a room on the highest floor. Checking in provided us with exactly what we'd asked for. No problem with anything although the hotel was very busy, coping with guests on holiday and also a wedding the staff worked well with everything. Being close to West Quay for the shopping another bonus although the traffic was very busy. A good hotel and would gladly stay again if in that area.

Room Tip: Contact hotel before stay for any special requests

Stayed here for 2 nights during the 2013 Southampton Boat Show - like many other reviewers at this time of year.

Check-in was quick given how busy the place was. I have IHG Platinum status, but wasn't disappointed not to have been upgraded - as the place was fully booked.

Room was a good size, looking west over the edge of Mayflower park and the cruise ship docking area. Despite being quite low down on 2nd floor, I was amazed at how quiet it was, even during this busy time - very good quality of sleep.

Fixtures and fittings (bathroom tiles, bath, joinery) are all VERY tired - I would say in need of refurbishment within the next year or two. Cleanliness was excellent, I am happy to report - but for the bathroom, the age of the fittings is beginning to compromise the ability to get the place really clean. If you are used to the immaculate, luxury sanitaryware of other IHG brands like Hotel Indigo or Staybridge Suites, you are going to be very disappointed. For me, not a deal-breaker, but worth noting.

Nice to have proper air con in the room: the usual central system, with plenty adjustable options. The windows are also full height which makes the room very bright and even if the evening sun is pounding in, you can crank up the air-con and enjoy the view feeling comfortable, without having to draw the curtains.

Breakfast was definitely above average for a Holiday Inn. Although the breakfast area was small, we were always seated promptly and efficiently and had minimal queueing despite the hotel being fully booked. And one of those cracking make-your-own-pancakes machines - bravo! Seems to be exclusive to larger Holiday Inns. Most welcome.

Was a bit disappointed on check-out to discover I had been charged for a daily newspaper - I thought this was complimentary for IHG Platinum members? Receptionist kindly offered to waive the charge when I brought it to her attention, but I noticed I was only charged the face value of the newspaper which is very reasonable - I have paid up to four times this cost in other hotels. So really, a very minor quibble.

Will I stay again?
Absolutely.
But only for the Boat Show or pre-cruise departure; there are many more comfortable options for Southampton in general.
As soon as the rooms are refurbished though - it will be a great option for any Southampton stay.

We picked this hotel because it was close to the pier where, next day, we would board our cruise ship. The hotel was ideally situated, a five minute walk from a major shopping centre and only a short distance to high street shopping. Our (upgraded) 9th floor, two room, suite was spacious with a separate lounge area with sofa and TV and a dining table with four chairs. The spacious bedroom featured a queen size bed and room for a desk and TV. We found plenty of storage space in dressers and cupboards. Strangely, the suite came with a trouser press but no fridge. The furnishings were quite new and in good condition if not high end. Our windows looked over the east docks and the waterway to the Isle of Wight. Although this hotel was quite expensive the internet still cost an extra £5 per hour!

Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments posted regarding your pre-cruise stay here at the Holiday Inn Southampton. The hotel is, as you say, perfect for guests per-cruise holiday, being the closest hotel to all the cruise terminals, great views of the ships docked waiting to take you away on your holidays and perfect for that last minute shopping at West Quay. I hope that you enjoyed your cruise and hope we may have the pleasure of welcoming you to the Holiday Inn Southampton again in the future.

This hotel was really not what I expected. It was clean but so very small. They do have a very friendly staff and very helpful staff. Food at the bar was also good. Breakfast was also very good and the staff at breakfast very nice and pleasant.

This was an overnight stay before a cruise. The outside of the hotel looked OK, but dated. There was a cheerful mob of cruise passengers checking in when I arrived, and the front desk staff was as happy as the cruisers - everybody was in the bon voyage spirit. While standing in line to register, I noticed how dated and tired the furniture, carpets, and general overall decor appeared.
The elevators are tiny in this hotel, and very slow. If you need to get someplace in a hurry on cruise day, plan extra time waiting for the elevators!
My room was near the top of the hotel, and the best thing about it was the view - through two opening windows - overlooking the cruise ship terminals as well as part of the old town of Southampton. The rest of the room looked like a 1950 time capsule, with thrift-shop style furniture. Nothing matched, and it had chips, cracks, dents. I had not been in the room very long when I noticed a very strong, almost chemical odor which was sickening. Even with the windows open, it was terrible, and I requested a room change. This was granted, and the new room was also up high with the same great harbor view. Same old, worn-out furniture however. The bathroom was clean but very small, and there were nice toiletries. The upholstered chair in this room, however, had truly disgusting stains on it, was wet in some places, and damp the rest of it. I pushed it out into the hallway and asked for another chair. Housekeeping produced a desk chair which was not comfortable, but at least they replaced the chair. The carpet definitely needed replacing in this room, and did not look clean.
I noticed the bedding was peculiar when I turned down the covers that night. There was a rather tired comforter in a duvet cover, but apparently no sheets on the bed, just a paper-topped, plastic-backed mattress protector very thin thing on the seriously tired and far too soft mattress. It made for a terrible night's sleep, needless to say. When I mentioned this to the front desk next morning, they told me there should have been sheets on the bed. I checked the duvet again, and there was some kind of very thin sheet, but it had stuck to the duvet, and felt like some kind of nylon fabric. The mattress protector appeared to be similar to those used in hospitals or nursing homes.
The staff at this hotel were far better than the room, fortunately. Anything I needed or had questions about was promptly taken care of with great British humor and cheer. The front desk arranged for a cab at my convenience to take me to the cruise terminal the next morning. The cost is very low, about $7 US, and the driver was definitely professional, in a dress shirt and tie, and very polite. Cabs are booked by room number, and the driver comes in and calls your number when it's time to leave from the lobby.
A great place for dinner while staying at this hotel is the Duke of Wellington Pub, an 800 year old true English pub abouit a 15 minute walk from the hotel. Wonderful landlord host, fabulous fish and chips, and the ambience is truly authentic and beautiful. The front pub room is lively, and there is also a back room which is quiet, beautifully decorated, with a Tudor era stone fireplace, leaded glass windows, soft seating and nautical decor on ancient planked walls, beamed ceiling. Also worth exploring if time permits is the Old Town of Southampton, an easy walk from the hotel. Many historical streets and buildings and cobblestone streets, and informative signage explains the history. The town walls are massive, and very old in this town which has been a historic seaport for centuries.
Breakfast was delightful the morning of my cruise - the lady who oversees the small dining area is full of energy and enthusiasm, and takes care of her guests with motherly devotion. There is a big buffet with British and familiar American foods, or you can order a la carte from a menu. Small area, but full of light and cheerful. The food was very good, and reasonably priced. The British have been through a lot in their history, and have apparently learned what to be upset about and what to be cheerful about - their attitude is amazing, and their enthusiasm for life and its good things is contagious and wonderful to be around.
The hotel building may be in rather desperate need of refurbishing, but the staff more than makes up for the shabby room for one night. I would probably stay at this hotel again because of the location, convenience, and staff. From what I heard other cruise guests mention, all the port hotels in the area suffer a bit from heavy use, and this particular property had the best staff overall. Southampton has been a seaport for centuries, and I'm sure I had better accommodations than the sea travelers from the 1600s! The building's condition kept me from giving this property a better rating, but when it comes to the people working there, it's excellent as far as personnel.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room with a view overlooking the cruise terminals.

The hotel Was fine clean, good service, good location, the only thing which made me understand I'm not coming here again is the bed, soft bed that will not support your body (And I am very thin)
Terrible mattress, My whole body needs a good massage now! I'm unhappy and very disappointed.

Room Tip: Probably choose another hotel..

Hotel modern and clean, room for two persons was a good size, bar food very good and Janice in the bar thinks she is on stage because she is a star!
Running round looking after people in a very friendly and professional manner, she was lovely to deal with and made our stay a memorable occasion - cant wait to return.
We were in So'ton for a seafarers reunion from the 80's and it was great staying at your hotel.

Room Tip: High up for good views - all the rooms are great anyway!
