Holiday Inn Southampton

This Holiday inn is quite an old building however there has been a recent renovation of the public areas. The Reception staff found us great rooms with good views over the port. The room we had was very spacious and we were able to have guests visit us to chat and have coffee while enjoying the view. The hotel has a good location for pre cruise stops and the Island Ferries. The service for both dinner and Breakfast was excellent and it was nice to be recognised as a previuos visitor. I am confused by another reviewer as my experience was so very positive. Except the slow elevators.

This hotel is convenient to the cruise ship terminal, but that, and its restaurant, are the only good things to say about it. Our room was filthy, the bathroom was worse, and the plumbling was in need of repair. If you are a cruise ship passenger, you can do much better elsewhere.

We recently stayed one night here on a mid week break and thought it was a great hotel. The hotel is in an enviable location and check in was swift and welcoming. The room we had (1st floor) overlooked a car park/docks and had floor to ceiling windows which was lovely as the sunset was superb the night we were there. The room we had was very comfortable and spacious and had all that was needed (inc tea & coffee making facilities). The bathrooms are pretty dated but saying that, the rather antiquated looking shower was more powerful than most modern ones I've used! The hotel has a nice little bar which was perfect for a couple of pre dinner drinks! Many people were eating in the restaurant/bar but we wandered down the road to Frankie & Benneys (LeisureWorld Complex). Breakfast was great with lots of choice of hot/cold food. We went into the Old Town the next day and had a lovely stroll round the old walls/merchant house etc. Southampton actually has quite a lot of history to offer the visitor as well as some excellent shopping areas - it's just a pity most people only come to stay one night in a hotel pre cruise and never get to see the town!

We chose the Holiday Inn as our overnight before leaving for a cruise to the Mediterranean from Southampton. We flew to Heathrow and took the National Express coach to Southampton. Very easy walk to the Holiday Inn from the bus station. The hotel's location was the best we could have picked, as we could also easily walk to the ship for boading. No need for a taxi. Our reservation was waiting for us and check in was efficient. We asked for a room with a view and were able to see our ship when it docked. The room was not large but was comfortable. We booked w/breakfast and it was very good and quite satisfying. Staff was friendly. Just a short walk across the street was the old city, definitely interesting for a stroll. There are a couple of nice pubs for dinner; we enjoyed the Duke of Wellington. One nice point of this hotel was that we met several other couples going on the same cruise and encountered them often on the trip, which made it more fun. We were pleased with our choice of this hotel and would stay there again. It is of course, a Holiday Inn so no surprises.

We stayed here before our cruise and would definitely stay again for that purpose. We flew into Heathrow and came down on the National Express bus and then walked to the hotel from the bus station. Even with our luggage this wasn't too bad but we were lucky with sunny blue skies that day.

It's very close to a nice shopping mall and was a short taxi ride from the cruise terminal.

A friend and I stayed at this hotel from 1 through 6 April 2009. The hotel is well-located near Southampton's docks. It was a pleasant surprise one morning to throw open my curtains to find the cruise ship "Oceana" moored just several hundred feet away. Rooms on the other side of the hotel face the city and its Mayflower monument, medieval walls, etc.
Rooms were comfortably furnished and well soundproofed. Staff were obliging; in the absence of a business center, they twice printed out word processing documents I needed on their reception office's printer. A full English breakfast is included in the room price, and was well prepared. The dining area is sunny and pleasant and, despite a full hotel, functioned efficiently.
My only gripe was the cost of high-speed internet: 20 pounds for 24 hours is nearly three times what most hotels in the U.S. charge. One could also purchase an hour for six pounds, but I believe it had to be used in the hotel lobby.
Hotel elevators were slow in responding, apparently a common UK problem; one wait exceeded eight minutes.
There are no restaurants or shops within 1/2-mile, and a four-lane highway lay between the hotel and "town," making walking to these difficult for elderly or infirm if one does not have a car, .
In general a pleasant experience -- comfortable and competent.

We stayed for one night on the way to Bournemouth. We had our doubts about Holiday Inns but the location was convenient, they did interconnecting rooms(we travelled with our 4 year old) and it was amazingly cheap. We payed £155 for 2 rooms and DBB for all 3 of us. On arrival we looked at the rooms before checking in as we had up until 4pm to cancel. To be honest it was quite basic but great views...right out onto the Devere opposite. We were honest with the reception staff and told them we were going to look at the other hotel. They were fine with this and said they'd keep our reservation until we decided. The Devere was lovely but all they had left were rooms with awful views of a block of flats and the price for DBB for 2 rooms was more than double. As we only having a brief stop, we opted for the Holiday Inn. The reception staff were very welcoming and friendly considering we had just checked out another hotel. We had 5 beds between the 2 rooms and the family room was very big. Basic bathroom and disappointingly, no fridge or minibar but the customer service more than made up for this.

With low expectations for dinner, we were amazed at how good the food was as was the service. Our son's meal was included in the price and after a great 3 course meal we only had a modest drinks bill.

My only advice if you're staying there, opt for a room away from the lifts and on a high floor for the views. Thank you to all the staff for a really pleasant stay...and I am fussy!
