“JUST OK”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 December 2010

Stayed the one night prior to our cruise the rooms where of the normal standard of this chain, which I find to be good.
What lets this Hotel is the stupid price of its meals and drinks.
We talked to people who had just dined in the restaurant , who was not impressed in the service the food or the prices and strongly advised us to eat else where which we duly did.
We had one drink at the bar which was to dear for the bar provided which was very dull.
As breakfast was included we went down for this. To say it was a bun fight was not doing it justice it was much worse than that. Total chaos with not enough staff to cope dirty tables everywhere, running out of fruit juice, food, spoons, etc etc.
The staff who where their did the very best to cope and I could not fault their efforts but it was to much of a uphill struggle for them. God bless them for the effort they put in.
I did not see anyone in charge of this mess.
I should hope the hotel is normally better run than this as I normally stay at one of the other Holiday Inns when I am in Southampton which is run much better than this one.

Most Americans go to Southampton to board a cruise ship. So the big question is "Is it close to the docks?" Yes! Many others staying at the Holiday Inn were also waiting for the Celebrity Eclipse trans-Atlantic crossing. The morning of the cruise it was lightly raining so we took a cab to the ship, others walked, and saved 4 pounds. This hotel is comfortable, and within walking distance of all the interesting historical areas of the town. Shopping is also close. There seemed to be a friendly bar crowd at night and a great breakfast buffet in the morning. If you stay in Southampton take in a show at the Mayflower Theater

The lobby is tasteful as is the restaurant but the rooms are outdated, dark and dirty. We had mold on the shower ceiling, dust on the furniture. AND EVERYTIME THE TOILET WAS FLUSHED, THE PIPES IN ROOM 303 RATTLED, so loud that they could be heard in the room next door. There was no iron or ironing board - just an antique pants press that barely gets warm. Our companions in the room next to ours HAD THEIR HEADBOARD FALL OFF, LANDING ON THEM!!
The front desk staff was unable to give us some asked for information and didn't offer to find out what we needed. And I'm still waiting for my wake-up call!
The restaurant staff was pleasant and attentive and the breakfast brunch was fine. The location is good for those catching a cruise ship but thats about all this place has going for it.

For our work, we constantly book hotels within the Holiday Inn group, so we are at the highest level in their loyality scheme.
This time, we booked this hotel based on its location, overlooking the cruise terminals, as we were leaving on a transatlantic voyage the next morning and close to the car rental location.
When we arrived at the hotel around 11.30pm, after a long day at work and a long drive, we were told by the receptionist that the hotel was overbooked and that he would transfer us to a different hotel. The receptionist actually seemed annoyed with us showing up and asking questions. He couldn't answer any of our questions and just "apologised", but in such a tone that felt more like being fobbed off. Unhelpful would be a kind way of describing him.
We were moved to the Jury's Inn, which was on the other side of Southampton, no view of the cruise ships.
We sent an email to the customer services of the Holiday Inn group who promptly replied saying this was unacceptable and that we would be contacted by the management of the Holiday Inn Southampton within 48 hours. We have now returned from our vacation, way more than 48 hours later and have received no phone call, letter or email. Not impressed is an understatement

We stayed for one night prior to our cruise due to convenience of the location (within walking distance of the pier), however should have listened to the reviews! Our room (110 I believe) was designed to be handicap accessible however was clearly renovated to fit this as most amenities could not accommodate either the handicapped or the healthy! The "shower chair" was a white plastic lawn chair which didn't fit in the bath! Also, the shower head came out of the side of the wall which you would expect would have been extendible so that those who could not stand could even use it! It appears that someone from holiday inn corporation must have instructed the hotel to make renovations when they purchased it however whoever made these had no idea what they were doing! Beyond the issues of accessibility and safety, the carpeting washing and stained, our so-called room darkening shades looked like Swiss cheese making sleeping impossible, and the fixtures in the bathroom had remnants of dirt and mold on them as if they hadn't been thoroughly cleaned for quite some time. As far as service, we got in late and chose to eat in the restaurant in the lobby: or should I say nursing home! Not that there is anything wrong with the elderly, however, when you serve such bland and lukewarm meals as those found at country kitchen buffet, the you'll probably only cater to THAT crowd. We were worried after dinner given that we had booked our room to include the breakfast in the morning. As far as breakfast, the food was great and self serve, however getting into breakfast was a whole other story: we were greeted by a rather sultry woman who demanded our "breakfast pass" which we were not provided with at checkin. When we told her this then she demanded that we purchase our breakfast with the possibility of refund later. My husband instead produced the email to the woman who then stated, "I can't be bothered with such things!" and sent us to the front desk. There, we were greeted by a slightly more pleasant woman who we showed our email to and who agreed that our reservation did infact include breakfast however stated, "I don't know why this keeps happening". She then requested who we booked through (we had booked by phone directly with crown plaza hotels as we had stayed in crown plaza while in London just before going to Southampton). She then requested that we send her a copy of our email, however wifi isn't free at the hotel so we declined unless she was willing to provide the service, which she wasn't. Anyway, overall the experience was subpar and not that expected of a building with the holiday inn emblem pasted on it. The brand is wellknown in the US and Canada as a quality establishment however apparently hasn't shared that model across the pond.

From reviews we didn't know what to expect but with three ships due in the following day we knew it would be busy. Easily parked the car. Check-in was fine and straight to our room which was clean, reasonably proportioned and an excellent view of City Terminal and beyond - considerably better views of the ships than the DeVere. Soft and hard pillows duly labelled, comfortable bed, tea and coffee bottle of water, fridge was on but nothing in it but we had fresh milk to keep cool.

Dinner was OK - nothing to rave about but perfectly acceptable for me, although my wife's gammon had to be returned. Breakfast the following morning was pretty good and despite being exceptionally busy the staff managed very well indeed. As we woke, Independence of the Seas was just docking and it was as if it was on our doorstep.

For the price (we booked Dinner Bed and Breakfast) we thought it excellent value and would certainly book again.

I stayed here for one night before I ran conference the next day.

The exterior of the building is dated, reception area, restaurant and bar have obviously been refurbished recently. The room I had looked tired and dingy, I had to turn on every lamp in the room to make it seem brighter. I spotted an old chocolate wrapper left by a previous guest on one of the shelves of the bedside cabinet. In the morning when I had a shower and moved the shower curtain I noticed the bath had not been cleaned- there was still soap residue left from a previous guest. However, I did have a good nights sleep.

On a positive note, the service at the bar was very good, food and drink arrived promptly and it was of good quality. Breakfast was also very good.

The gentleman who was in charge of looking after the conference room was brilliant, I think his name was Adam. Nothing was too much trouble and his customer service was fantastic, breaks and lunch were well organised and he made sure delegates with special dietary requirements were well looked after. If the manager of the hotel reads this I think he deserves to be recognised for his good work.
