This is the gate way to the oldtown in Southampton. Now only the gate remains but it is still reminds one that it was the gate for tax collection in the past. The plaque by the gate explained that there used to be a court room as well.

Photogenic architecture before entering the oldtown.

Bargate and the old walls of Southampton are amazingly incorporated into the city centre. Lots of little nooks and crannies. Look around Southampton centre and see how many you can find!

Some negative reviews on here, but take it for what it is. It is one of the relatively few parts of old Southampton that survived the World War II bombing, and is one of the medieval gates to the city, which has been well-preserved. Not worth a trip on its own, but part of a tour around Southampton. When I went (Saturday) there was a market next to it.

Southampton is a nice town, full of nice things to see!
It's an old town and Bargate rapresents the "door" of the town

see this regularly as it is a focal point in our city centre and so nice to see such an old building mingle within a busy city centre
