Westgate is part of the Walls walk and includes the relocated timber framed Medieval Cloth Hall which was relocated to this site. Unfortunately the Hall and nearby building are not open to the public. It is as if Southampton is embarrassed by its medieval past and wants to position itself as the consumer centre of the South with its vast shopping centres. Another modern monstrosity is going up on the other side of the road to Westgate (hotel, shops?) which makes visiting the area rather noisy as it is next to a vast construction site.

I would give it a while if you want to see the old city walls, there is major development work going on along the route of the walls and access to some of the areas is blocked off. The noise from the building work is also very loud, it just is not a pleasant place to be at the moment. There is also a lot of litter along the route of the walls, a shame to see crisp packets & plastic bottles left lying around these historic walls.

Interesting medieval part of old city walls, close to high street and transport connections. Combine with a walk around the walls.

An interesting bit of the Walls of Southampton that emerge by the Commercial Quay. See also Bargate in the Commercial centre.
