Westgate is part of the remains of the old city walls built around Southampton in the 14th century. Gate towers were part of the walls and this historic gate near to West Quay was an old entrance. There is an information plaque on the gate tower giving some facts. Great place to come and visit and enjoy some of Southampton's history.

Southampton is rich is history and all things nautical. If you appreciate either then head to Westgate it was from here that there were invasions by the vikings and French, the sailing of the Mayflower to America, Titanic and the D Day invasion, it all happened around here!

Southampton is not the first place you would think of for a weekend break, but believe me, we were very pleasantly surprised. I had really no idea just how historic the place was (The sun shined, which always helps) the local people were also very proud of their heritage.

This is something that you can find easily if you wonder around the city and stay down by the main enternace to the docks. We stayed at the Pig in the Wall.

As with the walls generally the council have placed useful information signs around so you can easily understand the significance of the building
