“Gorgeous Quirky Boutique Hotel - Breakfast Disappointing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013 via mobile

As the title suggests we found this hotel utterly gorgeous but tbh breakfast should either be got rid of altogether or improved drastically to include cooked breakfast items (besides boiled eggs). However I get the impression that maybe due to its historical significance they aren't allowed to cook anything on site, could be to do with conservation laws they aren't permitted to extract cooking aromas?? If there are no such rules in place then there really is no excuse for not providing more cooked breakfast options! Especially seeing as its extra £10 charge for continental breakfast and we did feel somewhat pressurised into confirming we would be having breakfast when we really didn't want to.

Aside from this issue this is a stunning hotel with charming features and friendly staff and would stay again if we had to stay somewhere in Southampton although we would be tempted to stay at the sister hotel in Brockenhurst instead purely for more choice at breakfast.

We had been meaning to go here for ages after seeing good reviews and managed to fit in lunch between the Sea City Museum and Tudor House both highly recommended.

Opened the door, immediately greeted with 'Hello' by the two people behind the bar and found a nice little table by the fire. Nice surroundings and interesting choice of snacks. First problem no draught beers so not wishing to rip my friend off by having a pint of Peroni via bottles at £6.82 I decided to slum it with some bitter, Hampshire Rose, which thank goodness was served cold so tasted not to bad to my lager lout's taste buds.

For food we shared some awesome pork scratchings with apple sauce (the menu described them as pork scratchings which is doing themselves down), and some olives and pickles plus some free almonds, very nice, and nicely served.

For 'mains' two of us had the charcuterie and the other two had quiches of different flavours, all plates cleaned and conclusion = yummy. My only complaint is that they could have been a little more generous with the four different cuts of meat.

It wasn't cheap (about £16 each) but worth it and would definitely recommend it, I think it would be superb for afternoon tea.

So overall very good, nice chap who served us, pleasant and informative.

Really good experience, go try!

After an awful experience at the neighbouring Grand Harbour hotel it was lovely to find such a great place to stay whilst visiting our daughter who is at uni in Southampton. We arrived on Saturday booked into the Grand Harbour for one night checked in at 2.00pm but was told the room would not be ready until 3.00 ish. That was fine until 3.00pm came and went it got to 5.00pm and were told it could be as late as 6.30 pm it was total chaos in there. We walked next door to the Pig in the Wall and very luckily got a room straight away and what a lovely room it was. The staff were fantastic nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was extremely relaxed, decor is very stylish and everywhere is very clean. Again thanks to Beth who was brilliant and will definitely be staying there in the future and will also be trying the other 2 in the group. Can't say enough good things and this is the very first time on trip advisor but just had to sing their praises.

I am seeing all these 5 star reviews and I just dont get it. I am reviewing this as a someone who only went in for a drink and bite to eat, I didn't stay in the hotel.

Q: What exactly is it... Is it a bar? Is it a cafe? Is it a coffee shop? Is it a restaurant?
A: None of the above, its just plain weird!

The inside is really small, but done up nicely, I like the decor, well apart from the overkill on the herbs? Really why so many herbs? Sadly the decor is all I liked.

Firstly the menu, Its not really 'food' its snacks, its ridiculously overpriced, small portioned snacks. There is only a handful of things on the menu, and none of them appetising.
Then we have the drinks, there is tea and coffee, and some alcoholic drinks, but at £6 for a small glass of wine and £11 for a large, thats just a joke.

Anyway we both looked at each other in bewilderment, the place looks like a really nice old fashioned pub outside... and a living room inside (covered in herbs? ), but we soldiered on, we ordered some overpriced drinks and a bread board. The bread board consisted of some pickles, some bread, a couple of uncooked cherry tomatoes and a few scraps of meat (apparently they are locally sourced, so that makes it totally okay to serve you a few scraps and charge you the earth? )

The staff were all very nice, in a very fake Americanised "how is your day", smiley, pretentious nice kind of way. The music was suitable soft jazz, to add to the nice pretentious atmosphere.

Now i like twee, i like quaint, I like unusual places, even pretentious places, that are honest to what they are, and for those real places, I am willing to pay.... but this isn't... its just trying too hard. The result is just awful.

I finished my overpriced drink, picked at my last raw tomato and vowed never to return.

In this day and age, we need good honest places, not places that have the right music, the right colour wall paint and just enough mismatched glassware and cutlery to pretend they are something they are not and rip you off for the privilege.

The Pig in Brockenhurst is excellent, the Limewood hotel, also first class, these then are all part of the same forward thinking, well funded group of businesses , and it's no surprise to find the little Pig in the Wall, Southampton, to be a fresh approach to City stays. It's small, comfortable, and currently has the perfect staff for the location, (actually, in this instance, this hotel will live and die on who is employed). Arriving late, you have someone there at the car door to meet you almost before you have parked, and the level of service is on a par with the front of house at Limewood. This if it gets rolled out in other places, with care, will work brilliantly.

As to this Pig, one night availability is brilliant , but wonder how long (at weekends) this will last, and breakfast? I would re think the offering. Invest in a small griddle/ extraction system and at least offer say chunky bacon sandwiches, sausages and poached eggs or Eggs Benedict. If Mr or Mrs owner, manager ever reads this, look at the Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Newquay breakfast offering and add it as an additional revenue stream!

Perfect, good luck, will return, oh, and you do realise that you will be absolutely rammed during the boat show, so get the back bar ready for evening drop ins!!

Room Tip: Room 10 , but all quite small. Sunday breakfast, cramped if coming down late to read the paper.

Having stayed at The Pig, Brockenhurst we thought we'd give the Pig in the Wall a go as we wanted to do some weekend shopping. Easy to find and brilliantly placed for shopping at West Quay this latest Pig is great. The rooms are not huge - we had a comfy room, not sure what a snug room would have been like! They are however beautifully appointed with wonderful comfy beds and fantastic power showers. The staff were incredibly welcoming and keen to make sure that we had everything we needed. Breakfast is fun - an eclectic selection of cereal, fruit, pastries and meats culminating with an egg boiler for you to cook your own boiled eggs and toaster for the obligatory toasted soldiers - fab! Excellent coffee available and fresh juice. We found Sunday morning more of a challenge as we didn't come down to breakfast until just after 10am (which is when everyone else had come down) - seating is more tricky then with the low tables and chairs of the bar area.

Overall if you want a couple of nights away this place is perfect even offering a shuttle service to Brokenhurst for supper at The Pig in the Forest - book early to avoid missing that treat!

My only complaint (if you could call it that) is that breakfast isn't included in the price. I can't see many people passing up the chance to enjoy making their own boiled eggs for breakfast!!

Can't wait now to see how the Pig on the Beach shapes up.....

Room Tip: Room 10 is at the top of the house - a nice sized room with small ante room with work desk and bathr...

Such a splendid b & b, excellent interior, fabulous staff who made every effort to go out their way to help. Whenever I need a hotel in Southampton, I will go there, loved it!
We took up the free land rover rise over to the other pig for supper and the driver was lovely.
This is my perfect type of place to stay, thank you I am a real fan!
I am looking forward to your hotel opening up in Dorset!
