First Class Sailing came recommended by an old friend who in turn had been recommended by a certain gentleman who came 3rd in a recent round the world yacht race. I had done a little sailing previously but thought that I ought to start getting some proper tuition and qualifications. Last week saw me on FCS's 5 day RYA Competent Crew course. Previous reviews here on Trip Advisor had instilled in me quite high expectations. These expectations were exceeded. Skipper Nigel was not only a great teacher, but could cook a bit too! His chicken curry was up there with the best. Safety on board was a watchword, and the teambuilding between us (me and 4 other crew/students) added to the all round excitement and fun. Five days with a near permanent grin on my face. If you are wavering, and not sure, all I can say is try it I'm sure you will have fun - and fun to me is what it is all about.

“Explore the Secret Waters trip (Sep 2013)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2013

Yet another great trip with First Class Sailing. We managed to visit several rivers along Essex and Suffolk, as well as good experience in the Thames Estuary. We had plenty of input into where we went - the Solent is not the only choice ! I had ample opportunity to practice my skippering skills. Colin is a great host, the catering was always excellent, and he was a calm skipper allowing us to practice in a safe environment. This is my 7th trip with First Class Sailing, and I would recommend them without hesitation.

“Competent Crew Course – First Class Sailing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

Had a great 5 days with First Class. Before booking with them I called a few schools but they were not as helpful as First Class. First Class was brilliant from the office staff to the skipper. Don't hesitate...

“First Class - 5 days Competent Crew training”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2013

I live in Norway and couldn't fit my schedule with the available local courses, so I've booked with First Class at last minute, in a Saturday night, just a day before it started. Had online booking confirmation immediately after payment, and was contacted by staff next day morning, shortly after I landed in London.
We were in 4 in total for the training (including instructor), and we all gathered together inside the "Kingfisher" at Sunday evening, for an introduction to what it would be our "home" for the next 5 days.
The next days sailing were much better than I expected, and it was a great experience for me. I feel like I've learned much more than the contents of a competent crew course. I was given the chance to perform tasks that a day skipper would. Thanks to George, our instructor, that very patiently shared some of his vast experience on sailing.
The weather was good, the wind was generous everyday, and the trip was planned according to weather conditions.
A special thanks to Tony and Peter, for their amazing performance as "chefs" in the boat, cooking even in rough sea conditions! Food available was plenty and of good quality.
I've finished the training confident that I've learned enough to take part as a crew member in a sailing boat, as well as taking my sailing skills to a next level in the future.

“FCS' Competent Crew Course - July 2013”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2013

If you're hesistating about booking a course with First Class Sailing (FCS) - don't. I completed the RYA Competent Crew with them in July and it was a first class week from start to finish. Everything about their presentation of the course was well thought out and organised. The instruction was excellent. And the food was pretty good too! I would highly recommend FCS to anyone looking for sailing instruction or boat handling experience.
