The hotel is in a good location however the refit needs improvement. eg Hotel is overly hot and window will not stay open, A single small lift that gets blocked by people in the waiting room, Whilst bedroom was large we were woken each morning to seagulls and pigeons on the roof.

The most annoying aspect was that the fire alarm went off 3 nights of our stay waking us up and forcing us to get dressed to see what was wrong - generally at 1 in the morning. This was not good after a long flight from Australia. There was no offer to reduce the rate because of this and I had to request a discount when departing. Removal of one breakfast was offered.

The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars like other travelers is that getting to our room with so much luggage and no valet was difficult and our wing was very warm. Otherwise, I'd definitely give this hotel 5 stars for price, staff, historical venue, and the best night's sleep ever. The hotel is over 500 years old. Queen Victoria used to stable her horses there. Jane Austin celebrated her 18th birthday there and came back every month for meetings and dances. Shakespeare stayed there. The hotel has the largest bay windows in the world. Thanks to Gary, the maintenance man, for most of the info. He was a delightful man who showed us the trick to flushing our toilet. :) We, also, were there for a cruise and I'd love to have stayed longer. The area is filled with history. The Titanic set sail from that port and there is a museum there. 1/3 of the passengers were from that area. The shops are great, too. The price for the night was unbeatable, and I slept for 12 hrs in the most comfortable bed! This is a great place to stay before a cruise or if you want to sample the history in the area.

This was our 2nd visit to this hotel and we have to say it is the staff that are the outstanding feature. As stated in other reviews, it is an old building and this presents challenges with the room sizing. As we were travelling with our 3 year old grandson we need an additional bed and on our first visit we had a first floor room with plenty of space. On this visit we had a ground floor room which was far too small and had a step down into the room of 3 steps which proved difficult with a 3 year old & buggy in tow. The bathroom had looked as though it had been built in an old hallway as it was very narrow & very difficult to use. Another bugbear was the wine list in the restaurant. They have a fine list of good wines, that were reasonably priced, but hardly any stock. However, if booked via their website (or in conjunction with Paulton Park tickets) you can get a good price and it is in a great location. We ate in the restaurant both mornings and one evening and the food/ambience/service was excellent. Next time we stay we'll be picky about the room but still look at it as a good value hotel with great staff and will look forward to returning.

We stayed here the night before sailing on the Celebrity Eclipse to the Mediterranean, leaving our car in the hotel car park for the duration; this proved more economical than "official"car park fees as well as a lovely, stress-free start to our holiday.
Dinner was excellent quality and good value, breakfast was good and the service was impeccable. The staff couldn't be more friendly, helpful and efficient. The hotel is a listed building, so no air conditioning in bedrooms (a fan was provided in the room); the lay out is quirky - up and down steps, squeaky floorboards and hidden alcoves - but this added to its character and ambiance.
Though some may find the rooms on the small side, they are more than adequate and have all you need. We would definitely stay there again and recommend it to friends, family and other travellers.

Room Tip: Ask for one of their larger rooms if size is a concern.

Our stay here was fairly enjoyable, the hotel is hundreds of years old but has been updated and is of a decent standard. Our only problem was noise from a wedding on the friday night which the excellent staff tried to deal with but not to great success. Give the staff their due though the following night was another wedding and the had the foresight to warn us and offered another room which we took. The staff were happy to help the move and were professional and friendly at all times, especially the young polish lady on the reception who worked very hard to satisfy guests needs. The age of the hotel was not to my personal taste but many people will love the character of it, myself I prefer new modern lines. The deal we had for four nights before a cruise I would be happy to pay again but not the full price, tonight I am a few hundred yards away in the Ibis which is one of their sister brands and a lower star rating but suits my taste in style of hotel.

We decided to spend two nights in Southampton before setting sail on our Scandinavia/Russia cruise. We like to do this to 1) get to see new places and 2) to get somewhat acclimated and lose the jet lag! We found The Dolphin thru other revised, including Cruise Critic and booked a room. We arrived to Heathrow from the US, and took a National Express bus from Terminal 5 to the Southampton Central Coach station. We easily walked a few blocks to our hotel, which is conveniently located in the middle of Old Town.

The staff were so nice upon our arrival..and our room was fantastic. We were on the first floor (which us Yanks would consider the 2nd floor!) The Dolphin is an older building but you can see the renovations they have had done. Our bed was very comfortable and the bathtub was one if the largest I have ever seen in a hotel! The onsite restaurant, Signature, had one of the most delicious potato soups I have ever tasted. It was beautifully decorated and very relaxing after a red rye flight and 1.5 hr bus ride!

The next day, with tips from the fantastic staff (again!) We found the best fish and chips in SoTon....don't miss the Duke of Wellington pub! It is literally 2 blocks away and will be some if the best you have ever tasted! What an authentic and warm place to wait out a spring shower!

We will definitely return to the Mercure Dolphin again and it is going on my list if recommendations for my envious friends!

Spent one night here before our cruise but wasn't impressed. We had a ground floor room which was that noisy around 2am and then from 5.30 onwards. Then around 7am other guests were up and slamming bedroom doors, and 9am house keeping erghhhhhhh. The room its self was a descent size, but with the creakiest floor boards. So we walked on the ship that morning feeling shattered. The only good thing was the staff who were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Don't know if there are any!!
