“Great hotel - Great staff”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

My friend booked this great hotel as we were visiting her daughter who has started university. Liked our room - second floor at the back - nice and quiet. The staff were lovely- particularly the manager who told us about the history of the building - we did not see molly. It was fun seeing the people dressed up for the Jane Austen ball. The breakfast was good - set us up for a days shopping. Would like to say thank you for making our weekend special.

My wife and I stayed !9th and 20th October to celebrate her 60th birthday which is actually today 21st. The room very clean 112 first floor and quiet as it is at the rear of the hotel. The bed was very comfortable. There were various things in the room if you needed to use ie ironing board and iron, hairdryer, safe deposit box which we were quite impressed with. The staff were very friendly and helpful in particular Maggie on reception when we checked in and Jose he helped us regarding our parking enquires as the car park was very full. The only meals we had during our stay was breakfast, which was very nice, good selection and hot which makes a change to some hotels we have stayed in. We have a friend in Southampton so visited her in the evening therefore didn't have dinner in the hotel. We had a very nice weekend and will definitely return when visiting the area in future.

My husband and I stayed here for one night as we were taking a cruise. The room was clean, had free wifi and was reasonable by UK standards. The location was excellent as it was close to the main features of this quaint town, and only a very short taxi trip to the port. It is not a five start hotel, but very comfortable. It offers a good breakfast, although nearby breakfast offering are plentiful and very well priced (as we found out after checking in),

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the front of the hotel as it contains a maize of connected buildings and corrido...

I have stayed at the Dolphin a few times in the last 12 months on business. This is one of my favourites. I like the informal feel of the hotel and the meandering corridors. I like the fact this hotel is not another identikit boring box. I like the somewhat eclectic layout & location of the rooms.

The reception and the bar area are small and welcoming and from what i have seen and heard The Dolphin receives more than its fair share of repeat visitors. The rooms are always immaculate.

The hotel is very pleasing on the eye and as any seasoned member of staff will tell you it is the original coaching inn dating back to the 17th century and was, remarkably perhaps untouched during severe bombing damage sustained in Southampton in WWII. ( They will also show you, if asked, the visitor's book including a comment written by Jane Austen ! ). This beautiful building stands out in an otherwise underwhelming High Street.

For all of the informality of the reception welcome and the bar area the restaurant feels more up-market and is regularly used as a venue for weddings and other special occasions. The breakfasts are good, the restaurant is always impeccable in my experience. I have not dined there other than breakfast. The staff are uniformly friendly and efficient and appear to enjoy working there !

The Dolphin has four stars which i feel is a tad generous. I really, really like this hotel for all of the reasons above but please be aware the rooms ( in my experience ) are quite small and although unique in character are quite basically furnished and the pillows are always as flat as pancakes !

Having said that I've awarded four stars because for me the quirky nature, the history and the quality of the staff make up for flat pillows.

Room Tip: There are a number of rooms new refurbished on the ground floor near the coachway - rooms 19 to 25 I...

Pre cruise stay.

Boy even at the end of Sept this was the hottest hotel ever. Window would only open a few inches had to use coat hanger to keep it open. Could not sleep was unbearable even with fan on. Room at front so with window open then got noise from street.
Receptionist was very very helpful, wedding was on so moved us to top floor.
Hotel showing its age tatty in places.
