We had booked a 'Cruise and Stay' package and booked in our car on arrival. I will not dwell on the hotel in general, good mid-priced hotel, pleasant enough room and breakfast.

The trouble started when we arrived at the port and had to wait ten minutes in a freezing wind for the very nice taxi driver to confirm that we did indeed have a package and therefore the taxi was pre-paid. On our return I rang the hotel and asked for our taxi giving details of number of passengers and baggage. After waiting over a half hour and still no taxi I re-phoned the hotel, was told, I hadn't rung them this morning, it was up to me to ring the taxi company and when I asked for the number, it was given in a very rude manner. Taxi arrived speedily and we were on our way.

When I went to get our car keys I was given no explanation of this appalling behaviour, nor an apology, even when I immediately cancelled our August booking.

Thank you for reviewing your stay with us.

I was sorry to read there was confusion in regards to your taxi transfers for which I sincerley apologise. I would like to assure you that such problems are very uncommon and the park and cruise packages we operate work very well and we receive many compliments.

I do hope you will choose to stay with us again in the future so we can prove this to you.

The Mercure Dolphin is an old hotel in the older section of Southampton. There are many good places to nearby shop and eat. It is close to the port and the train station. It has a car park if you drive to the city.
My wife and I recently stayed there twice -at the end of April and mid May. The staff is very helpful. We arrived for the first stay at 7:30 am and they found a room for us. The room was in the main building and was small but clean with an updated bathroom. It was quiet during the night. The room over looked the courtyard.
The second stay was in room 19 in a seperate building along the passage to the car park. Again, a small room with a new bathroom. The room was once part of the stables so has old timbers as part of the walls and ceiling. It was a bit drafty and because the room is on the ground floor the curtains needed to be pulled across the door. The staff called this room "traditional".
We enjoyed our stay in Southampton and the hotel location was a plus.

So this is very much a split hotel! Service exceptional the best I've seen a 4 star hotel. They were so helpful and great to my daughter (2 years old) without asking we were brought plastic plates, cups, cutlery etc. colours and colouring book with breakfast.

The rooms were ok. You must remember its a very old hotel so rooms are creaky and not level
I particularly liked the juice, chocolate buttons and colouring pack left in the room for her it was a lovely touch!

I have one major issue with this hotel no air con! It was boiling when we stayed and most uncomfortable. Hanging my head out of the window at 1.00am was not fun!

Couple of other tips.

Yes it's opposite a 'gentleman club' no noise as long as you stay at the back of the hotel. Also having never been in Central Southampton there's an awful lot of these clubs around when you drive through. I'm assuming there's a correlation to the port ;).

I wouldn't go wandering around the hotel as it's not child friendly but if it's a night stay for Peppa pig world it's somewhere decent to sleep that's child friendly.

One other tip, some of the rooms are split level with 5/6 stairs to go to the bathroom and no stair gate. Just make sure if you have a little one that's not good with stairs you check when you boom that you have a single level rooms.

Overall ok for night, not a nice area but service was great!

Great place, great ambience....lots of space in the room, and a really comfy bed. Southampton is fun to wander and had great fish and chips at the pub nearby. Breakfast was excellent at the hotel and we were ready for our day. Btw, it is only about a mile walk to the harbor, and we beat the cans sitting in traffic!

We stayed here before our cruise and were pleasantly surprised. It used to be the Dolphin but obviously has been taken over and done up. They do a good cruise package whereby they take you to the ship and back. Our room was very comfortable. The staff were charming and the food was good. Our waitress Sarah was particularly sweet. We will definitely go again next time we cruise from Southampton. The only down side was that the corridor could do with a lick of paint!

Room Tip: Our room was in the main hotel.

Its a nice relaxed hotel with excellent Staff. The car park is very useful and the hotel is certainly central and convenient. The restaurant food is very good and we liked the bar. Did I mention how good the staff are?!

So I'm almost reluctant to make any negative comments but the two rooms we had over three nights had issues. The first night was spent in a very small double with virtually no storage space. A tiny wardrobe was half-filled with an ironing board and iron. There was only one small draw in the room and that had a hairdryer and Bible in it. It is the first time I have stayed in a hotel or B&B room anywhere in the World without an empty draw. We could have coped if it had been for one night.

In fairness our request to change rooms was positively dealt with. Our new room was a huge improvement. Unfortunately it was located in close proximity to what I assumed were fridges and working areas which resulted in noise and disturbance. I suppose the moral of this tale is to seek a room upstairs and if necessary pay more for 'Privelige' rooms. We never viewed them but
imagine they were much better.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms on the higher floors as long as they are sizeable.

The check in was smooth and polite, free internet for as many devices as you require.
The room was not in main block but in main walkway between hotel and car park and a shortcut for walkers to city centre so lots of noise, also there was a picnic table close by which seemed to be the smoking area so noise there too and the fact the door was not a great fit made it drafty and noisy, plus the curtain had to be lifted over the door hinge to keep out the light.
The room itself was compact, bathroom small but functional and all very clean. Lots of old wooden beams as this part of the property was previously something else but unsure what.
Parking was ok as i arrived at 230pm but i noticed others struggling to park after 5pm as car park not huge. Shopping centre is easily reached on foot and overall a pleasant experience, would prefer to be in main block if i stayed again.

Thank you for posting a review on trip advisor your feedback is important to us.

I was pleased to read overall you enjoyed your stay with us and have noted your comments. This particular room was orginally one of the stables when the hotel was a coaching inn so very much steeped in tradition!

I do hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future.
