“Good stay”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We stayed here for 2 nights for my birthday, the check in was ok just a small wait the room was rather small it overlooked the car park it was uncomfortable hot and couldn't seem to cool it down like most of the hotel. The staff friendly and free wifi all over. The breakfast was good and plentiful. The hotel is in a great location with a wetherspoons pub virtually next door a think it is a listed building so not much can be done to improve layout etc.

This is some what hard to find the parking space and the lady who directed us on the phone was a little hard to understand. Found it eventually. Our room overlooked the courtyard on the swcond floor. The hotel twists and turns inside and is great inside. Modernly decorated and the bed was very very comfy. Breakfast at £13.95 pp was a little excessive though!! Great location, shops and bars and plenty of choice to eat out at on the doorstep.

I should get bored of giving the same feedback and nothing being done. Sadly my room is booked through a corporate scheme and so I don't get a choice on where to stay but this time I think I need to get the booking agency to take on board the comments and remove this hotel from the list. The chairs in the room are so uncomfortable if you want to sit and work. I've said this so many times and I was promised a new chair 90 minutes ago. My back is hurting like mad. The rooms are hot - appreciate it's a listed building but can't leave the window open on the ground floor as I won't sleep. I agree with other reviewers that £5 for room service is steep, especially as the bar and restaurant were crowded and raucous when I came in so why would I want to sit through? The food is good - had the warm chicken salad.

Just returned today after a 12 night P&O cruise to pick my car up .
Everything was perfect -except Internet was down on the evening of our stay and that's why I did not give this review full marks .
Room very nice with tea making facilities .
Breakfast was filling .
Staff very helpful and friendly
Taxi service to and from port spot on time .
Hotel within walking distance to all the main shops for the morning before our cruise.
Would use Dolphin for stay the night before a cruise and parking again.

Despite the hotel being in the city centre, I did not experience any noise. Had a family suite and it was huge with plenty of room. Very family friendly - children's activity packs, chocolate and juice were left in the room on arrival, and my children were given a colouring book and pencils at breakfast. Very comfortable beds. Clean and well presented room. Breakfast was lovely - plenty of choice. Friendly staff.
Only one criticism - room was far too warm. Even with the window open, we were all red hot.

A goodly number of visitors in Southampton are cruise passengers who may require a one night pre-cruise accommodation. With hotel choices being limited, a stay at the Mercure Dolphin is really a matter of necessity. It is well located on the High Street within walking distance to the West Quay Shopping Center and Red Funnel pier and a short taxi ride to the Cruise Terminals.

This Grade II listed property is the oldest hotel in Southampton. It was here in 1793 that Jane Austin celebrated her 18th birthday. Perhaps in bye-gone days it was grand. Today it is an old building with public areas in need of serious refurbishment.
Immediately upon entering is a worn-out small area for reception near which is a tired bar. The restaurant itself is non-descript. Food wise, breakfast is average. Across the street is a good family-run Thai restaurant. Go there for dinner.

Our room was certainly clean. Bed comfortable. Large enough to permit two open suitcases. Bathroom adequate. The view was the fire escape. Wi-Fi complimentary. Staff pleasant and accommodating.

Just because the Dolphin has advanced years do not expect a hotel having the English traditional ambiance. Another choice is the modern Grand Harbour Hotel.

One tip. Book as far out as possible. Not only does the pricing increase, but availability is an issue.

The staff were excellent,a very comfy king size bed.
No fridge.
excellent free Wifi
very dark room, not one opening window ,so the room had a very musty smell ,no window at all in the bathroom,so you can imagine the damp smell from condensation.
Excellent location for the start of our cruise.
Wanted to book another night on our return ,but the price had more than doubled, should look after your returning guests, first rule of Hotel management
Our room was 80 pound for 2 nights,a return visit for 1 night was quoted as 147 pound!!!

Room Tip: Don't book a room in the adjoining lane, and definitely not room 17

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us here at The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel, our customer feedback is important to us.

In regards to the pricing we do run special offers at certain times during the year, this is the reason there is an increase in price quoted in addition to which we do offer a whole range of packages which again will change the price depending on your specific requirements.
