“Traditional hotel. Good location.”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Hotel located in the centre of Southampton. For a traditional hotel I thought that it was maintained to a high standard. The bedrooms in particular were very good, especially the en-suite bathrooms, which all (I saw in 3 of them) appeared to be very modern and probably recently refurbished. The first room I was allocated did not suit me as it was ground floor, with no opening window. During my stay it was 27%C outside (I always sleep with a window open anyway). No air conditioning "as a listed building", but fans provided. The reception staff were very obliging (all of the staff I saw were friendly and helpful) in finding me a fourth floor room with opening window. The first room I had been allocated was very quiet. The second room was overlooking the High Street and I was advised there might be some noise, but actually it was very quite from, say, midnight to 07.00 a.m. I was very comfortable in there. The lift only goes up to the third floor - not a problem for me. Virtually next door is a Wetherspoon's: traditional English breakfast £3.29, unlimited filtered coffee £1.15. The 'Tavern House' (bottom of High Street, turn left along Town Quay) was an interesting 'quirky' pub; with occasional live music. Oxford Street was quite I lively area at night.

Room Tip: Please note the comments in the 'review section'.

I and 8 colleagues spent a night here. The hotel is lovely with really nice staff and rooms. I was in one of the outside suites which are roomy and to high standard. The one complaint everyone had was the lack of air con, yes it was warm outside but the rooms were incredibly hot. Colleague have stayed before and even in early spring it was very warm. We all had to keep windows open which means you do hear some noise from those drinking outside ( not late though) and early morning seagulls. I would still recommend as a really nice hotel to scary in if in Southampton.

Room Tip: Room not to front of hotel.

We stayed for one evening before we took our 14-night Iceland and Fjord Cruise. The hotel was referred by our travel agent and we considered ourselves lucky to take her advice. Not to mention its relationship with Jane Austin, the hotel is conveniently located. We visited the Old Town, the museum, park, and Oxford Street, all within 20 minutes walking. The breakfast was good and a good value for money. If you spend only one day in Southampton like us, this hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street may be a bit noisy.

We stayed at this Mercure Dolphin and was pleasantly surprised! Being in the Travel Industry I have stayed in a lot of Hotels and trust me this hotel is of a good standard, please read on!

Firstly I would like to say how accommodating the staff were both before and during our stay. Dominic was fantastic and the lovely ladies at reception were very friendly too.

After reading reviews the night before I was worried about our stay! However the hotel was actually quite nice. It is an old hotel but modern in-side and a bit quirky with character which we liked. As this is a listed building they aren't allowed to put Air Con in the hotel. Our room was rather hot due to the lovely weather this weekend but the hotel apologized for not having AC but offered to bring as much cold bottled water as will liked throughout our stay.

To be honest we don't have air con at home so wasn't really an issue!

Our room was lovely and modern and rather big.

Breakfast was very good too in a lovely restaurant and you can have the choice from a menu, cooked to order as well as your normal buffet.

If you have booked this hotel or thinking about booking please don't be put off by negative reviews. For 1 nights stays for Peppa Pig World or Cruise stays its perfect and in a great location too!

Car Parking - Just pass the front of the hotel there is a little road follow it all the way round and you will come to the back of the hotel and car park!

The staff really will make you feel welcome, definitely recommend!

Room Tip: standard rooms were lovely but you can also upgrade if you wish!
