Description: Gusto Lounge Bar & Bistro is at the heart of Southampton's cultural centre and the gateway to the City. If you are a visitor to the city using the busy central station, the ever popular Mayflower theatre which is home to most of the biggest west end musicals and plays or the newly opened sea city and titanic museum you will find us ideally placed. Our lounge bar is located on the ground floor. This is a casual dining environment. The ‘All Day Menu’ is served here on a walk in only basis; so casually walk in, sit down and then order at the bar. Our Bistro is located on our first floor; here you can enjoy a more formal dining experience. Between 5 – 7 pm, the kitchen prioritises the Bistro due to the proximity of The Mayflower, so particularly if you’re a theatre visitor, this is the place to dine.

After a lovely matinee show of Warhorse at the Mayflower we had booked as a group of 11 to have a meal before catching the train home.

The restaurant has been redecorated since our last visit and it looks really nice

We had to pre order our food due to the size of the group and had been sent menus in advance which had a set price on.

The food was fine and the staff were friendly. The drinks were really expensive, almost £6 for a glass of wine.

When the bill came the fixed price menu was higher than we had been led to believe and there was a huge service charge on top.

Having used this restaurant for years if visiting the Mayflower we all agreed that it is really expensive now for what you get and that next time we will go somewhere else instead.

Popped in for an early evening meal in which we were the only people in the restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant we had to disturb the waitresses from their conversation toegther to even get a table. Not good first impressions. After being told that they had bookings we were offered a table that was supposedly the only one available for us. We sat down and weren't offered a choice of drinks, the waitresses just went back to their conversation. After a few minutes the waitresses started to move some chairs banging into me twice without any acknowledgement or apology. Again, after trying to get the waitresses attention numerous times from their conversation we gave up and walked out. Extrememly poor service. Will not be going back again.

Close to Mayflower Theatre so booked a table for lunch based on TA reviews and location. Started well with a lunch special of £5.95 any pizza or pasta. Had sharing three small starters for £10 yummy and nice cold Pinot Grigio at £20 (tasted like Sicilian). Mains at £5.95 were nice and service so far, despite being busy (for West Side Story Matinee), was fine although place feels like a chain and not very Italian inside - even though it’s a one-off.

Thereafter, things went downhill, Panna cotta dessert had a thick crust/skin although it tasted fine, we were charged for two desserts (when we only had one) and the card machine was not working so we had to pay paid cash - so we left on a down beat. Shame because basics were all okay and it offers exceptional Southampton City value for money lunch. No sign of anyone who looked like the owner or a manager which might have made all the difference.

May now be facing stiff competition from Casa Italia all-you-can-eat down the road which looked full to the brim with pre-theatre diners.

marvellous for pre show. Busy busy, but the waitresses are on top of things. Nice atmosphere. Food enjoyable and we did not feel rushed. We went the evening of the Matthew Bourne Swan Lake, my partner surprisingly had one complaint - not usual from a man - everyone else there was female!! I do wonder why!! Book early, they do get booked up quickly. ps if you drive to Southampton, the main train station car park is really close, but watch that ticket machine, if necessary, go to terminal and get the ticket. Buon Gusto started off a lovely evening.

Popped into this restaurant on spec after a trip to the maritime museum which is just over the road. I first visited this building 30 years ago when it housed another restaurant and not much had changed inside in the intervening time. We were swiftly seated and chose from the pretty compact menu which consisted of Pastas, Pizzas and some daily specials. They were doing a lunchtime offer for the pasta and pizzas dishes for £5.95; We had a selection of breads, mozarella and risotto balls to start then a vegetarian pizza and the tagliatelle with porchini mushrooms respectively - all very tasty and enjoyable. Service was great, but we were the only diners for the hour or so we were there. It could be the unprepossessing building/location or some of the negative reviews on here that is keeping people away, its a shame it wasn't a bit busier; we enjoyed what we had and I would certainly return if passing that way again
