“FAMILY MEAL ON A WEEKEND BREAK”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

we initially stumbled on this as the hotel we were staying at didn't provide an evening meal and having the family dog with us we needed somewhere to eat outside luckily it was a warm weekend
The pub was packed as we had expected due to the nice weather and its fabulous location next the huge common but we were served pretty quickly
the food is a tad overpriced for what you get but we had delicious meals and therefore cannot complain , we even went back for lunch the next day
certainly would recommend

“Staff training is not a high priority”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

3 of us ate here on a Friday evening. It was quite busy, but they seemed well staffed. When we were sat at our table, it hadn't been wiped properly from the guests before. Not a good start.

Menus were dumped on our table, and drinks order was taken. The waitress had a vague idea what ales were on draft, but couldn't tell us anything about them - this is basic knowledge I think, especially when there are only 2 on offer.

15 mins later our waitress comes back to take our food order - but still no sign of our drinks.

When the food arrives, one of our party doesn't have any cutlery or napkin, we also wanted to order more drinks, and we had previously asked for water, no sign of that either.

We'd also asked for a replacement veg on one of our meals, that had been ignored.

No one is really around to help, and one of us still has no cutlery, and we haven't been offered sauces - essential with what we'd ordered!

We ask a different waitress for sauces, but no sooner had the word 'sauce' left our mouths, she snapped back very rudely at us that a different waitress would bring them over.

No such luck, we kept asking, and they finally arrived, shortly after we finally had more cutlery too.

Next job was getting our drinks. This again took more time than needed, but we eventually got them. The water probably arrived half an hour after we asked for it initially.

Once finished, the plates took ages to clear. Nothing worse than sitting with dirty plates in front of you for 15mins+.

All in all, the service is pants - no idea what they're doing. As for the rudeness of one of the other waitresses, it's fair to say she can't be earning many tips with an attitude like that!!

Felt like we'd done half the work that evening.

Won't be returning.

“Great Light Lunch and Crème Brûlée”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

The welcome was good and we were seated in a quiet corner with our drinks order taken almost immediately.

I had a starter as a light option and a gorgeous raspberry Crème Brûlée, my friend had a good meal too and finished with the most gorgeous sticky sweet ice cream desert.

The only "down" we experienced was that our second round of drinks didn't arrive, as the member of staff responsible for bringing them to us didn't hand over the task when her shift ended. A simple enough mistake so no harm done.

This venue is VERY busy at times, so I'd suggest you decide if this is important when planning your visit.

“Mind the veg”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Lots of outdoor seating and plenty of parasols at The Cowherds, pity that cars park right up to the tables ---- I guess that's lack of space but it did feel like eating in a car park. Fish pie! I love fish pie and this one when it arrived was generous, even if it looked rather untidy and the kings prawns were unpeeled and plonked on top. I really haven't got the knack of peeling prawns, not their fault. For some reason the fish was rather tasteless and there was a distinctly odd but not unpleasant flavour in the sauce. Serving spring greens was unusual and quite welcome but it would really have been easier to cut them with a steak knife! Vegetables are probably the most variable things to cook and a you just boil or steam them for x minutes doesn't work, they need to be tested. Hard work and disappointing.

“A tasty meal and fast service”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

We met friends for lunch and chose The Cowherds because the opening time shown on Google was 11:30. This was incorrect and we waited half an hour for the pub to open at 12 noon. They are aware of the issue and are apparently trying to sort it out. Despite this beginning, we were served very quickly and our meals arrived in good time. We all had the roast dinner and it was tasty. My husband is gluten free and the waiter had quite a good knowledge of the menu from this perspective. I wouldn't recommend this pub to people who are gluten free though because the menu is quite limited with options.
Overall we enjoyed dining at The Cowherds and would go back now we know the actual opening times :-)
