First impressions were good - friendly staff who made you feel welcome. Room was fine just as asked for but was on the the street side which on a Friday night was fairly lively which meant it was difficult to escape the noise on bedtime (at midnight). The room though was very warm and the windows did not open fully - so much so that I couldn't stay in this place during the summer. The fridge cupboard threw out a lot of heat. Our friends in the adjacent room had the same experience as us.

The bar was buzzy. Excellent live singer and the meal we had there was great british food with a modern twist.

Breakfast was good but we had to wait ages. One couple walked out after waiting 45mins and another was given cornflakes as they had no muesli - problem was they didn't tell the guest first. I also think breakfast really should be included in the room rate.

On check out there was over £50 in additional charges which had been put on in error! Our friends had £100 in additional charges which they had not used. We were told they had a problem with their computer. This was very shabby and a reason neither of us would return to this place.

Room Tip: Ask not a quiet room

Thank you for posting your comments on Trip Advisor. I am glad that you found the staff welcoming, however I am sorry that you found the room to be warm. I have checked the window in the bedroom that you stayed and our maintenace manager has changed the locks, to enable that window to be opened better. a number of overcharges on your bill on check out, this was a rare system error that caused this to happen, I am just glad that it was resolved in a short amount of time. I do hope that you will consider a future visit, I am sure it will be sure that it will be more memorable for the right reasons.

A boutique-style inn with luxurious furnishings and fabulous bathroom. Staff really friendly and the whole place had a lovely, warm ambience. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant which was really good and enjoyed a wonderful cocktail in the lively bar. As good as, if not better, than some of the 4 star hotels I've previously stayed in.

Room Tip: Stayed in the superior double room

A lovely weekend stay with my husband. Comfortable relaxing room with bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Staff on hand 24 hours but did not need them except for checking out as everything we needed was available in the room. Lovely little roof terrace for smokers (or non-smokers) was a pretty little retreat above the town. Fresh milk, cafetiere coffee and complementary bottled water in the room made a difference to the usual cartons of UHT found in hotels. Large comfy bed and clean, up to date bathroom made for a comfortable stay. Only downside was that it got very warm in the room and I couldn't open the window! The White Star is in a lovely tree lined street with a variety of restaurants, bistros and bars with outdoor seating giving it a continental feel. Close to the City and Ocean Village this is a lovely place to stay if you want to experience Southampton without being right in the town centre but still enjoy a lively atmosphere.

I was so pleased to read your very positive review and I thank you very much for all the points that you have raised, please rest assured that as the General Manager, I will pass on all your comments to the staff. It was great to hear that you enjoyed the smaller details, that so often make a big difference ! Fresh water and Fresh milk I agree is a lovely addition to our mini bars in all bedrooms. Thank you for pointing out the fact that you were unable to open the window in your bedroom, I have had this seen to today by our Maintenance Department and we have changed one of the window caps. I do hope that we will see you at The White Star in the near future, seeing that you are only from nearby Portsmouth.

This is a nice find - in fact I'm wondering if I should place a review as I don't want to find that we can't get in next time as it's become too popular! Very friendly staff, great situation and stylish clean room (superior double). How nice to have FRESH milk for the tea. We couldn't dine here as we needed a pre-theatre supper but order a selection of cheese and a glass of wine for our return. Lovely local cheeses, reasonably priced with a great selection of luxury biscuits and homed baked breads. Breakfast was divine: I went for the Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts and my partner had fresh fruit salad and both were superb, followed by Eggs Benedict for me and full English for me, but smoked salmon and scrambled eggs were also on offer. My only little niggle was that service for breakfast was a tad slow, but as there were newspapers available and the quality of the food was excellent this was some compensation. Are definitely planning to return!

We stayed at The White Star Tavern, Southampton, for 5 nights. The main reason for our visit was for treament for myself at Salisbury District Hospital, and we travelled to Salisbury for one day. We were greeted by Marc the manager, who took our cases up to our room on the 2nd Floor, and gave us all the information we needed. Our room, no 10, was spotlessly clean, with crisp bed linen, and soft white towels in the bathroom which had a stunning very large walk in shower. It was very warm, but a fan can be found next to your personal mini bar.
Breakfast was very relaxed served from 7am until 11.am, which is an excellent idea. All the food was cooked to order, and was delicious, l can recommend the Greek Yoghurt with walnuts and honey, and" THE ENGLISH" . Oxford Street is a very smart part of town, with lots of great places to eat and drink .

Room Tip: Ask the friendly staff in advance as to the best.
