“A curate's egg”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

The White Star exhibits quite a range: from a lovely, new, large bathroom with my room (the Whirlwind / 12), a fine room, to tired stairs in the maze of corridors and doors from the ground floor. A large group of us ate there as well: the ambiance is encouraging but somehow the food is about OK and the service needs some work. Breakfast took an age to arrive - and stating that 'we cook everything from fresh so it may take some time' is not really OK when all you've ordered is toast and berries/yoghurt....

The staff try hard and the bedrooms are good; with just a touch more on the service side, this place would live up to its very welcoming ambiance

Our party of three took two rooms, a Middle Deck and Lower Deck, for a one night stay prior to a cruise. Both rooms were lovely, updated and clean. The staff at the bar assisted us immediately when we arrived from Heathrow, and within minutes we were checked in at the upstairs desk by the manager. He seemed to always be at the desk, both that day and the next morning, when we had questions, and was very courteous and helpful. We were on the top floor, and heard very little noise from the pub, even though it was a Friday night. The tea kettle, assortment of teas, and biscuits was much appreciated at 2AM, when I found myself wide awake (the bed was very comfortable, it was only jet lag following a 10 hour overnight flight). The free WiFi was strong, with enough bandwidth in my room to Skype with family back home.

The full English breakfast the next morning was the best I've ever had. It was part of our "stay and cruise" rate, and added even more value to our stay. I'm very happy I didn't opt for one of the large American style chain hotels by the docks - the White Star made our short stay in Southampton memorable.

We needed a hotel in Southampton for an overnight trip to meet up with friends coming in on the Queen Mary 2 and picked this as a likely spot. It turned out to be an excellent choice, very friendly, comfortable rooms and a first rate restaurant. (plus there are lots of other eating options nearby) It's extremely convenient for the Gate 4 where the cruise ships dock. Car parking is OK with on-street parking close to the hotel - two hour limit but unlimited / free between 18:00 and 08:00. Don't tempt fate by overstaying your parking space though - we saw a parking warden busily ticketing at 5:00pm on a Sunday.

Very smart designer hotel, clean comfortable excellent standard throughout and tea and coffee making facilities to die for with individual cafetiere and ground coffee ! Very comfortable bed and excellent shower in stylish bathroom. Staff very helpful and accommodating and food to die for best breakfast have had in a hotel for a very long time thoroughly recommend the drop scones and maple syrup and bacon! Only downside is noise from rooms above with squeaky floors etc and water flow but is to be expected in a building of this age and design which is as it would have originally been, and not too disturbing, overall a very pleasant stay and a recommended city centre location.

Room Tip: All nice but if you want to avoid hearing others as for top floor

Stayed here for a Saturday night while doing a boat coarse at Ocean Village. Very handy location and clearly in the action of central/old town Southampton.

Lively pub with attentive and very friendly staff. Very busy and quite feisty after 10'ish but locals appeared to be enjoying themselves. Food was acceptable, our one complaint on the food was dealt with immediately and without question, which was a good sign.

Excellent breakfast for four hungry sailors, with plenty of coffee, juice and newspapers.

Rooms were ok, slightly past their prime but nice big shower and bed was comfy. Despite having a front room, noise was not that bad as staff clearly move people on after 12.00.

Thank you for your review posted on the Trip Advisor website.

I will certainly pass on your comments to the staff, as it is great to read that you felt service to be both attentive and friendly - even with us being so busy, as we were on that Saturday night.

I have taken on board your feedback regarding the bedrooms and can confirm that we are in the process of planning a refurbishment in terms of soft furnishings in all our rooms.

Thank you once again for all your comments.

Stayed here overnight ahead of a cruise holiday– thoroughly recommend staying the night before as it meant a leisurely morning and ease of access to the cruise terminals.

Alert bar staff found the manager on duty just after we arrived and then we were shown upstairs through a coded door to the reception area for check-in. I wish I could recall the name of the really great guy that welcomed us – all I can remember is that he was fairly new and had been working at the White Star Tavern for about 6 weeks. He escorted us to the room, brought wine at dinner, opened the in-room safe twice when I couldn’t work it out and was generally a fabulous mein-host. During check in asked if we needed transport in the morning which was duly arranged. Ocean Terminal is less than 5 minutes away by taxi and about £4.

We had an Upper Deck room which was very nice indeed. Good quality linens, comfy bed, gorgeous bathroom with a thunderstorm shower and lovely Temple Spa toiletries. Also an excellent tea/coffee tray with cafetiere, high-end teas and fresh milk in the stocked minibar. There was some noise from the street in the evening/early morning but nothing too disturbing.
Ate dinner downstairs and was thoroughly impressed. It’s a fairly lively place so not ideal for a quiet dinner. Service was excellent and very friendly. Food simply wonderful – both had scallops to start followed by the blade of beef with marrowbone and then had to share a cheese slate as I was stuffed. Nice wine selection too.

Very much enjoyed the leisurely morning before the cruise – there’s an a la carte breakfast menu with everything from full English, bacon sarnies, yoghurt, juices etc. Nice cappuccino as well. Any future cruises from Southampton and this is where the relaxed night before shall be taken!

Room Tip: Upper Deck rooms are very nice

I don't like the term Gastro Pub, but this is what the White Star bills itself as. The atmosphere is lively, and the music a little loud. The food is good by pub standards and the staff are friendly and helpful. The food and drink are reasonably priced. Probably not a place for a quiet dinner for two - but great for a group night out.
