“Another great holiday in the Lodges”
Reviewed 27 December 2013

We have been here before and loved it then but wondered whether a winter break would be as good but wanted to see the Christmas market in Winchester and visit the shopping cemtre in Southampton.
We had a fantastic time and the lodge was the perfect place to be staying.
We didn't book a hot tub this time as quite honestly my family aren't that brave when it cold outside but other were enjoying theirs as the water was hot and steaming - really quite Scandinavian.
I don't know how anyone could have found their lodge either dirty or looking worn ours was immaculate and after nearly five years since we first stayed here - they weren't all built then - they have been kept as new by the Ross family who manage the site
We are a fussy lot and my wife will pick up on anything but that's why we so like the lodges. Perhaps I should say why I like it is that she is always delighted that after her usual inspection she has always given the Lodge a perfect ten - not many places have that honour.
I would just like to give a big thank you for letting us have another great break in Winchester

Room Tip: All the lodges that I have stayed in have been great - you just have to decide how many bedrooms you...

We have stayed here a few times now over the past years. The lodges are now part of the holiday. Cannot think of anything to fault them. Quiet and in a great location, will be back in May. Excellent for our family break and better than other holiday rentals we have used in the past by a long way.

We had such a lovely stay at South Winchester Lodges. The lodges are so beautifully decorated inside and outside which made the whole stay very special. The staff were extremely friendly and gave me information on some great dog walking areas locally. We have already booked our stay for next year and I can’t wait. It’s lovely to be able to stay somewhere so perfect so close to a lovely city.

We stayed here to visit friends in the area. The lodges were well equipped, extremely clean and cosy. The staff were all friendly and very helpful when booking, upon arriving and popping in to make sure all was ok. We visited the Chirstmas market in Winchester which is well worth a visit. We had such a great time we've decided to make it a yearly event to relax before the festivities.

We have just arrived back home in the US, after a great 1 week stay at South Winchester Lodges. For the first week of our vacation we stayed in a London hotel, which was also great, but with 2 small ones we were more than ready to go somewhere less hectic and most importantly with lots more space than a family suite! It took us just over an hour to get to the lodges from London, but what a difference. The lodge itself was really well appointed and clean. We stayed in Lodge 9, which had a lovely outlook onto the woodland and a private hot tub, which my husband and I cherished after we'd put the kids down! The lodge also had a large veranda for the kids to run around on and in the middle of all the lodges there was a putting green, which seemed to entertain them endlessly.

The staff we met were very friendly and efficient. When we initially made the booking we did ask about the safety of the hot tub for young children and we were told it had a sturdy removable cover. When we arrived any concerns we may have had disappeared, as true to their word the cover was very sturdy and it also had clips to securely fasten it when not in use. We forgot to book a high-chair but fortunately one was still available and this was brought over quickly. There was a friendly welcome from Lawrence, one of the owners, who offered some good tips on where to visit and eat locally. We particularly loved the Plough Inn at Sparsholt - good food and an authentic atmosphere.

There were many things to see and do in the area and the lodge was a perfect base to explore from. We were lucky to catch the start of the Winchester Christmas market, which included an open-air ice rink that the kids loved, minus a few bruised knees. Other good kid entertainment included Marwell Zoo and Paultons Park, although the latter was quite expensive.

A five star stay which we will definitely book again!

We had a weeks stay here with our golden retriever. The owners were very accommodating and everything was perfect. We took our dog who was very welcome. We asked for a Hoover to be made available because of the dog and had a special pet Hoover in our lodge on arrival. Lovely quiet setting, well looked after and private. There is nothing negative to say. For any new visitors just be careful of the potholes (especially if arriving in the dark). The kitchen utensils are not of the quality expected but sufficient for their purpose. Would recommend taking a spare toilet roll and maybe wooden spoon to make life easier. All in all a superb break, the owners came and had a chat with us on arrival and departure. We had a lovely time and can't wait to go back again. Only regret is we couldn't stay longer. Would highly recommend to families, couples alike.

After reading Tripadvisor we had high hopes of a lovely mid week break in Lodge 7 (2 bed without hot tub). The lodges are really well situated for day trips to Paultons, Marwell, Winchester etc. The booking process was very smooth and we told the owners that we had a baby with asthma and they said they would hoover/clean well after the last residents (as they do allow dogs in the lodges). Great we thought!

However, we found lodge on our arrival that the cleaning and maintenance is not up to standard. I read other reports on tripadvisor of people finding dust behind beds/sweet wrappers under beds/dirty kitchen accessories etc. We assumed that given we'd highlighted cleaning on booking they would have made some effort. Our lodge was covered in cobwebs (see photos) and dusty behind furniture. There were bits at the edges of the carpets and the bathroom floor corners/edges grimy. The kitchen drawers/cupboards had little crumbs in them (they were not disgusting but you would expect them clean surely for accommodation advertised of this quality).

Overall the maintenance was also poor. Cracked bathroom mirrors, sealant on baths needing repair, a leak under the sink that was dripping into a Tesco plastic bag, rips in the sofa, crack in the bath, shaver point cracked and sealed up with mastic, the dishwasher didn't clean properly so we had to rewash everything, oven thermostat broken as at 180 degrees our pizza was burnt to a crisp.

The lodge did have a vacuum cleaner, and we could have spent half a day pulling everything out and vacuuming to remove the dust for our daughters asthma but it was meant to be a holiday! After 48 hours we were forced to leave. We emailed the owners telling them we were forced to leave but they didn't inquire as to why.

Overall, this isn't a "5 star GOLD rating for self-catering accommodation" and perhaps these lodges have slipped since they were assessed to be honest. We've stayed at much better. Even a Center Parcs executive lodge is so much better in terms of cleanliness, maintenance and fixtures and fittings. We wish we had chosen somewhere else.

We'd be interested in hearing feedback from Winchester Lodges company.

Room Tip: We do not recommend lodge 7.

WinchesterLodges, Owner at South Winchester Lodges, responded to this review, 30 November 2013
We were very upset to hear the thoughts from this guest regarding our lodges. As you can see from ALL the reviews we have had not one other guest has experienced these issues. We have dealt directly with this guest to give our responses to each of their complaints that they raised AFTER checking out. However as the guest did not mention any of these issues during their stay and waited until after they had checked out, we were not given any opportunity to rectify their complaints. We pride ourselves in customer service and ensuring that our guests have an enjoyable stay, therefore If we are not made aware of problems while a guest is staying we are unable to deal with them.

All our lodges have been inspected and awarded Five Star Gold by the Tourism Board this year (2013). We have also just been awarded the prestigious Silver award for Quality in Tourism, ranking us in the top two for self catering accommodation in the south of England.
