“A beautiful hotel in a stunning setting”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

We recently held our annual company meeting at the hotel and could not fault it. A beautiful hotel in a stunning setting! The events team were fantastic and every staff member that we came into contact with were polite, courteous, and very helpful. The meeting facilities are perfect, the grounds amazing, and the kitchen garden was a fantastic way to end our first day. We have already made a repeat booking for later in the year and are looking forward to it. Thank you to all at Lainston House who made our business meeting and stay the success that it was. We look forward to seeing you again in December.

Lainston House it´s a superb hotel with a very professional team led by their general manager Antonio Lopez Bustos. Stayed here last week due to my boyfriend graduation from southampton the following morning. Was a treat from his parents and what a treat it was. Not somewhere we would typically stay (we usual go for modern or boutique style hotels) but it really opened our eyes to how amazing traditional style hotels can be.

We arrived around 8pm in the evening and were greeted by friendly reception staff who quickly checked us in. We were then meet by a very lovely young man (not sure on name) who took our cases and helped us find our rooms, showed us the basics such as the restaurant and cocktail bar, and also small things like where the light switches were in the rooms.

We stayed in what can only be described as a apartment. It was HUGE, i think it was Pine but not 100%! It felt like a step back in time in a very good way. Massive wooden 4 poster bed, soft seating area, table and chairs for 2, dressing table, bathroom with shower room, bath, and double sink area, i could even go as far saying we had an entrance hall to our room. It was just amazing.

As we had an early start in the morning we order our breakfast to our rooms, it was promptly served at 7am (like requested). Huge selection of choices for breakfast and you can have as much as you like i.e. cooked breakfast, pastries, cereal, hot drinks, juices.

For anyone looking to stay in the Winchester or southampton area (only a short drive away), i would definitely recommend Lainston House!

Dear AGL_1992,
Thank you for taking the time to review Lainston House and congratulations to your boyfriend on his Graduation.

I will be delighted to shared your feedback with the team, specially to the concierge, for making your welcome memorable. It sounds like you enjoyed one of our Junior Suites, although, not Pine (it is not one the Four poster bed). The Junior Suites are very special and generous on space, boasting some added touches, like spa baths to rain showers.

Thank you for your endorsement - we look forward to seeing you back.

My second stay at this lovely hotel, this time I stayed on a Sunday afternoon & evening ready for a meeting in winchester Monday morning. Room was ready on arrival luggage was taken to the room for me so I could relax in the grounds. It's a very popular hotel for afternoon tea which is reasonable priced as is the snack and light bites menu. However, the restaurant is extremely over priced as are the drinks. Rooms are all beautiful decorated and very peaceful with lovely bathrooms. I would recommend this hotel for a special break or as I did look out for deals on secret escapes, mid week stays are usually always on offer and perfectly positioned for Winchester and Southampton,

Dear Pippa00
Thank you for your taking the time to review Lainston Following your recent experience. I am delighted to hear that you were able to enjoy afternoon tea and our Terrace menu - very popular on this fantastic weather. The Avenue Restaurant menu, our fine dining option, demonstrates not only our food ethos and the produce from our kitchen garden, but the skills and passion of the brigade of chefs led by Olly Rouse.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

I have reviewed Lainston before, from a business trip perspective (having stayed here 3 nights a week for a year). This time it is from a couples weekend away perspective.

Myself and my boyfriend spent our special anniversary here in June '14. I cannot fault a single thing. From Sarah Phillips (Reservation manager) helping to select the perfect room for us - (every room is different!!) just what we were looking for, to the smiling faces of every staff member on our arrival (Lucia, Magdalena, Sophie, Clair, Katie, Simon to name only a few). Who all make an effort to make sure everything is perfect for your stay, nothing is too much to ask for! We were kindly shown to our room and baggage brought down by Simon. Once the doors opened and we saw the fantastic Hornbeam suite, we were blown away! (Please see added pictures)

Added to this was the handwritten card and platter of sweet handmade treats, by the very talented chef for us to enjoy. We spent out first couple of hours just enjoying the room and gazing around! We then had some delicious wine and cocktails on the terrace, the day happened to be 28 degrees, so chilled drinks were bliss!

The overall experience was so special and I could not wish anything to have been better about the hotel, our room or the service we received! It is such a gem of a find. I think it speaks volumes that I stay here with work all week and STILL want to come back at the weekends! You will not be disappointed with this wonderful hotel and grounds! I am planning my next weekend here....

Room Tip: Consult with Sarah Phillips (Reservation Manager) to discuss what kind of room you wish to stay in...

Superb friendly greeting at reception , well received which was needed after a long haul to get to the hotel. A welcoming oasis. Valet parking a nice touch . Although I was there only for one evening for a business meeting the next day. My experience was such that I have recommended the hotel to all my colleagues. The bar meal was well cooked, although , the portion of fish was small. The drinks are expensive which to be fair is not conjusive to encouraging guests to stay longer in the bar and purchasing more drinks even although the view of the avenue of trees is amazing. The wine list is impressive, again a tad on the expensive side no doubt superb quality as I wasn't prepared to spend £10 on single small glass. For the business traveller expensive. The Birch room was well presented and spacious very comfortable and relaxing .
All in all a pleasant experience. Hope to visit again soon, thanks.

This is the email I sent to the hotel after our recent stay, and I was very pleased to receive an almost immediate reply from the General Manager which was both informative and constructive:

The good news is that the building is wonderful, the extensive grounds are delightful and the staff are friendly and helpful, if not desperately efficient. Wifi is free everywhere in the building, and fast. But there are problems almost everywhere else.
The room sizes vary enormously, from the frankly snug to those where you virtually need a megaphone to talk to other people in the same accommodation. We were in a room called 'Magnolia' – all the rooms are named after plants, which is cute but confusing, because if a friend is in, say, 'Holly', you have no idea where in the large rambling building it might be located – which was classed as a de luxe room, but was really rather small and unimpressive when you looked at its nightly cost.
There was good bed with comfortable pillows, a desk and chair, a TV, a single armchair, and a bathroom that was almost the same size as the bedroom. But there were quite a few niggles. The room is designed for two, so why was there only one armchair? The full-length mirror was in the wrong place, right beside the bed, so you couldn't actually see yourself full-length unless you were right in front of it or were reasonably short and stood on the bed itself. The wardrobe was really small for two people with even a modest number of clothes, and there was nowhere to put a suitcase apart from against the wall. The room was extremely hot, with neither air conditioning nor a fan. If you had any hope of privacy, opening the window and drawing the curtains didn't work because there were rooms directly opposite, the windows about twenty feet away. We could, of course, have asked for a fan, but in my opinion, and at these kind of prices, we really shouldn't have to.
The bathroom looked good but didn't really work. There were two sinks, but almost no space to put things down, so all my wife's make-up and other stuff ended up on the floor of the vast shower because there was nowhere else to put it. The bath was one of those strange double-ended things with a central tap that I personally think are stupid, because if you run hot water into it while you're lying there, there's a good chance of scalding yourself. On that note, none of the taps have any indication which side is hot or cold, so it can be a risky business washing your hands – or anything else, for that matter.
Taking a bath was not pleasant. The water was very soft, and once there was soap in it, standing up was difficult, to say the least, because your feet would slide and there was no grab handle or anything else to hold on to. There was a bath mat, hidden away in the wardrobe, which we found the morning we left, and it’s difficult to see why that wasn’t in the bathroom itself. We ended up with a lot of water on the floor because I slipped when I tried to get out of it. There was a TV built into the wall at one end of the bath, which seemed a trifle unnecessary unless you're a complete couch potato. It would have made more sense to ditch the TV and instead provide a shelf or something to hold toiletries, etc.
Friendly staff, as I said, but everything was really rather slow. We arrived late in the afternoon, went into the lounge and ordered tea, coffee, a ham sandwich, crisps and a granola bar. The drinks arrived quickly, but the sandwich took 45 minutes to appear, and the granola bar never did, until we prodded one staff member as we were leaving. Later that evening, in the bar, there were plenty of staff, but actually attracting the attention of one of them was quite difficult because they spent most of their time talking to each other and ignoring the guests. Service was generally slow for everything.
But perhaps the biggest disappointment was the dinner menu. The descriptions were somewhat pretentious, clearly designed for effect, and told the diner almost nothing about the actual dish. That wasn't a good start, but the bigger problem was that nothing on offer sounded even slightly appealing. The bar menu appeared far more attractive, with sensible and complete descriptions of dishes, and so that was what almost half of our party ordered from, despite eating in the dining room.
This turned out to be a good decision, because some of the dishes selected by other people from the main menu had clearly been influenced by the curse of nouvelle cuisine, and resembled pictures on a plate but were obviously no substitute for actual food. One starter, described as something aggressively trendy like 'pig and prawns', barely amounted to two forkfuls of food, consisting of two of the smallest prawns on record and a scattering of odd bits of pork. The person who ordered it actually muttered something about it looking like 'scrapings from somebody else's plate' when it was placed in front of him.
It was very noticeable that most of the people at our table left parts of their meagre portions, so presumably the taste wasn't all they had hoped for either. But the rib-eye steak from the bar menu was good, which it should have been at that price, though the fish and chips weren't: the portion of fish was small and the batter – allegedly beer batter – very soft and limp, not crisp, as it should be.
Breakfast the following morning, the best meal of the day according to some people, was not entirely satisfactory. Service was again slow, and again the portions were much smaller than expected. A friend ordered a kipper, expecting to receive just that, but was presented with what looked more like a couple of anchovy fillets than a kipper, a really mean portion. And another friend ordered an omelette, and got exactly that: no garnish, nothing but a small omelette in the middle of the plate, not even graced by a sprig of parsley. Even ordering the full English produced only one sausage, a really small round of black pudding, half a tomato, a couple of bits of bacon, one egg and a scattering of mushrooms, all of which looked rather lonely on the plate.
Our room had still not been made up when we returned to it at two in the afternoon on the second day of our stay.
We are very familiar with good hotels, having stayed in numerous four- and five-star establishments around the world, and we were expecting this hotel to reach the same kind of standard, which it demonstrably failed to do. Overall, a very disappointing experience, and a great shame, because the approach to the hotel is wonderful, and the buildings are splendid, a fascinating old country house and other structures set in the middle of the extensive grounds. But the management need to attend to some aspects of the accommodation, take a long hard look at the menu and really sharpen up to justify the rates that they charge.

Dear PeterSSmith,
Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Lainston House and for taking the time to contact me directly. We take all guest feedback as an opportunity to continue to work towards exceeding all your expectations in future visits.

I was delighted to hear that you found the hotel and grounds enjoyable with the added comforts of hi-speed internet and our handmade beds and selection of pillows as a noticeable plus.

Magnolia is indeed one of our Deluxe guest rooms which are all very similar in size – Some of the guests on your group, although on the same preferential rate, were upgraded to Junior Suites and Suites. These are, as you mention, very generous in size and of different style. We have a choice of 50 bedrooms in the hotel and not two are the same. Magnolia is one of a more modern design both in the bedroom and bathroom.

We are really pleased with the food ethos that our kitchen brings to the plate. Our one acre kitchen garden allows our chef’s dishes to evolve almost on a weekly basis by supplying quality ingredients when they are ready to be harvested. The Avenue Restaurant’s fine dining style is at the forefront of our food culture which has resulted on several accolades through the years. Just last month we were delighted to receive 3 Rosette recognition from the AA. In order to bring choice for guests wanting to enjoy homely options our Terrace menu offers a variety of different style dishes and I was pleased to see that the team were able to offer you and your friends both options in the restaurant.

Honest and constructive guest comments help us to continue monitor and improve our service and I hope to being able to welcome you back in the future. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly should you require any assistance in the future.

Kind regards
