Dont be put off by the picture of this hotel which sits above a carpark. Very 70's looking. Its in a wonderful location, right in the middle of everything you could wish for from this super City break. We paid an additional £10 per night for a Cathedral View, book room 102. We had the window open on Sunday morning, reading the papers with the bells a ringing! Superb. Massive bed, largest I have slept in for sure and very comfortable. Good nights sleep despite the usual wedding taking place on the ground floor on a Saturday night. Par for any decent hotel these days. The breakfast was well overpriced at £15 per person, so we found a local cafe for a more reasonable £5 and twice as much.
Book the catthedral view otherwise you get a view of a small carpark or dustbins at the front.
Top pubs, especially the Bishop on the river where you can sit outside and watch the fly fishing for trout, and the black boy. Took some finding, but so well worth it. Food excellent and a nice roaring fire. The wykham arms by the college was a real treat as well, Get there early to park yourself next to the open fire on a cold day.
We took a walking tour of Winchester which was only a few quid and very informative. You can then remember where you saw the restaurants and pubs to investigate later. The walk to the top of the hill overlooking Winchester was well worth the view, and you cant miss the black boy pub on the way back to rest your legs.
One of my better Sunday breaks. Hotel staff very helpful and polite. Good job! Enjoy.

Room Tip: Room 102. top view of the Cathedral.

Quiet, clean, comfortable. Exceptionally good value from an early internet booking. What more can I say? It was one night in a Mercure in WInchester and I had no great expectations. It is REALLY annoying that this website will not allow me stop after my second sentence which is all people really care about. I am only filling in the rest of this dribble to get up to 200 words. I think MUCH less of Trip Advisor for this rotten stunt of not accepting written reviews of less than 200 words!!!!!!!

Like previous reviewers, we also chose the hotel for its location as we were visiting the Christmas market. Yes, it's true that the car park is small but the attendant was very helpful and we soon found a space and once the car is parked there is no need to move it for the rest of the time as all the places of interest, shops, restaurants etc are within easy walking distance. Winchester is busy and, as we were a party of 8, we found it difficult to book a restaurant for the Saturday evening so chose to eat at the hotel. The previous reviewer who described the restaurant as under-used was correct and the food was very good and well presented. The restaurant could be made a little more attractive, though - it is a little utilitarian in appearance and would be improved with tablecloths (used at breakfast but not at dinner, oddly) and some 'decoration' - a flower or candle, perhaps. All the staff at the hotel were friendly, courteous and efficient. The rooms are well-appointed (if a little dark) and the beds and linen are excellent - the carpets are due some refurbishment. Our visit was superb value for money - not expensive at all - and the breakfast was good and plentiful. All in all, fantastic location, good value for money, very pleasant stay.

We chose the Mercure Wessex, to be honest, because we were visiting the Christms Market at Winchester. The location,, situated as it is effectively in the cathedral grounds, was too good to resist. As it turned out, we would probably choose it for different reasons on a future occasion. From the welcome on our arrival to the checkout on departure, everything went about as smooth as it possibly could. Extremely pleasant staff who really made us feel valued at all times. The restaurant is seriously underused, which is sad, because the variety of different menus on offer would tempt any palate, and it overlooks the cathedral grounds. Perhaps the price puts people off, because the hotel is quite expensive, but the evening meals are well comparable with most restaurants and the quality is superb. Sleepwise, amazing beds, supremely comfortable and quality traditional furniture. Spotlessly clean throughout hotel. Both hotel manager and restaurant manager much in evidence and clearly had their eyes on the ball. Niggles, ? Some breakfast items could have been slightly warmer, but buffet breakfst is fairly normal nowadays and we did notice that items were regularly changed. We did not use the car parking facilities as we travelled by train, but parking is a problem and is expensive. We will be back.. I sincerely hope!

Not a bad place, our room had been recently refurbished. Had requested a cathedral view but despite checking in at 11am none was available. Lighting in the rooms is terrible,- too low and moody, not great for putting on makeup.
The bath in our room would have taken about 4 hours to fill, but shower was ok.
there was a wedding going on the night we stayed - meant parking at even more of a premium and had to walk through a crowd of rather rough types smoking and drinking to get into the hotel.
But for £105 it was value for money.

Stayed here for one night and could not fault it - excellent location, comfortable, modern and clean! Didn't eat there so can't comment on the food.
Room overlooked cathedral, and we didn't have any problems with noise like some other reviews - slept very well indeed.
Staff were very friendly (the night guard in particular), only downside was the large queue at checkout in the morning.

All in all a nice hotel which provides good value for money :)

Dear poppyflower121, Thanks so much for your kind comments. Glad you had a nice stay. Sorry about the queue in the morning, Its one down side of being so popular. On the occasion of your next stay why not take advantage of our express checkout and avoid having to wait in the queue. Kind regards, William McWilliam
