“Can't beat the location”
Reviewed 18 December 2011

This hotel looks a little out of place on the outside, nestled literally between the Cathedral and the High Street- it looks like an ugly concrete block! As soon as we walked in we were reassured- the lobby was dressed lovely for Xmas and the room was spacious and neatly designed. It was steps away from the High Street and just across the lawn from the Cathedral- how fab to wake up on Sunday morning to the bells! The only thing I would say is not to bother requesting a Cathedral view room. We'd read that there were only a few standard rooms that had a view so we put a request on the booking form- quite prepared not to get one. When we arrived we were surprised to find we had been given one (well, two as we'd booked two rooms!) but then were told there was a Christmas party and we'd hear some "boom boom". There was no offer to take a non-Cathedral view room instead- I did feel a bit like they took advantage of us to fill an undesirable room. The music was indeed very noisy although it quietened at 11pm and was shut off promptly at 12am. I also learnt that had there not been a party we would've been charged an extra £10 per room. To be honest there was a massive tree blocking most of the view so I would say it wasn't worth it (although I didn't see the view from the other rooms- I assume they overlooked the concrete back of Debenhams). Overall, however, the music didn't put us off and we had a great time in Winchester.

Dear fleeceylauren, Thanks for taking the time to write a review. Glad you enjoyed the location and sound of the bells of the cathedral. It does make it quite magical on a Sunday morning. Cathedral view rooms do have their advantages and I am delighted that we were were able to offer you one. I apologise for the music but am pleased to hear it did not put you off. Kind regards, William McWilliam

Sandwiched between the Cathedral and the pedestrianised High Street, it is perfectly central for the visitor. Rather drab exterior in fact blends in nicely with the historical ambience. Who wants a brash modernist building yards away from a 900 year old Cathedral, in any case? Inside the hotel, however, the emphasis is firmly on making the guest as comfortable as possible. Our room was spacious, huge bed, temperature perfect, and quiet. English breakfast came with the hotel deal.(Internet deal!) Lounge areas pleasing, with the bar area enjoying spectacular views of the Cathedral. We came for the Xmas Market. We have already pencilled in a return visit next December.

Room Tip: Facing the Cathedral

An amazing venue against the backdrop of Winchester Cathedral, with easy access to the town centre, and all the historic sites Winchester has to offer. The hotel is comfortable, and generally speaking the service is good upon arrival and in the dining room. Good standard breakfast, offering an excellent selection.

Car parking can be a problem, but every effort is made to assist you with this. If staying at weeeknds and you have a room on the back of the hotel, it can be a bit noisey late at night because of a local pub, so would recommend you ask for room overlooking the Cathedral..

My husband and I (both well over 75!) wanted somewhere central for some Christmas shopping and relaxation. We were very pleased with this Hotel, just off the High Street. It looks a bit unprepossessing from outside, but inside it is modern warm and welcoming. Our room on the second floor looked directly onto the Cathedral - it was spacious with a very large and comfortable double bed - a modern TV, a very full hospitaly tray (lovely flapjacks!!). The Air conditioning was efficient and easy to adjust - there was a bath and a shower with nice fluffy robes. The only complaint I really had was the lighting. We like to read when we are staying in a Hotel and the lighting was quite dim without a central light.
We didn't have any meals in the hotel, as we like a mainmeal mid-afternoon, but there are so many lovely "Eateries" within a few minutes walk, that this was not a problem. We'd stay there again, if we wanted to return for another visit to Winchester - by the way we stayed there for 3 nights.

Having booked in advance, we managed to get this hotel at a cheaper than expected price. It is a business hotel, but other than seeing lots of people in suits come and go, this made no difference to our stay.

The location is very good for those wanting to be in the city centre; right by the cathedral and at the back of the high street, it it very central.

First impressions of the hotel is that it's a horrible, dirty-looking building from the outside. However as soon as you walk inside, you are met by clean and bright surroundings. The reception staff were helpful and prompt and we were advised how best to get to our room.

The room we were allocated was an average size, but with facilities such as a fridge and widescreen TV with freeview (makes a change from 4 channels and a pay-per-view ads channel!).

We were offered a room with a room overlooking Winchester Cathedral, but told that securing one of these costs an additional £10! Declined to do this and consequently got a room which overlooked a not-so-aesthetically pleasing alley. However as we were using the hotel simply as somewhere to sleep and were out and about for most of our trip this didn't much matter to us.

Bedding was clean and nicely presented. Bathroom was also noticably cleaner than most; although the allocation of towels was a little on the mean side, I'm sure we could have asked for more had we been bothered. Unlike most hotels, "smellies" such as shampoo and soap were still provided in the bathroom.

Tea and coffee making facilities were provided, and a complementary flapjack each were also left out in the room for us.

We didn't dine in the restaurant but this looked clean and nicely decorated.

Would definately recommend this hotel for anybody wanting a basic but clean hotel in the centre of Winchester.

I've stayed in the Mercure Wessex on several occasions and am always happy with the staff attitudes and the cleanliness of the hotel. The location is great, located right in the centre of Winchester. There is car parking at the hotel which is useful but you should be aware that there is charge for this - its also quite tight to get a space! Breakfast service, checkin and checkout were all efficient. The restaurant overlooks the cathedral for an amazing view in the morning. The ony minor complaints I'd have would be that the bathroom fittings are aging and require refurbishing and the wifi, whilst available, requires a visit to the reception to sort this out so I didn't bother. The shower screen leaked onto the floor which I didn't notice until after my shower, by which time the floor has flooded - not a great start to the day! The hotel was otherwise good and the room was quiet with a comfortable bed.

Dont be put off by the picture of this hotel which sits above a carpark. Very 70's looking. Its in a wonderful location, right in the middle of everything you could wish for from this super City break. We paid an additional £10 per night for a Cathedral View, book room 102. We had the window open on Sunday morning, reading the papers with the bells a ringing! Superb. Massive bed, largest I have slept in for sure and very comfortable. Good nights sleep despite the usual wedding taking place on the ground floor on a Saturday night. Par for any decent hotel these days. The breakfast was well overpriced at £15 per person, so we found a local cafe for a more reasonable £5 and twice as much.
Book the catthedral view otherwise you get a view of a small carpark or dustbins at the front.
Top pubs, especially the Bishop on the river where you can sit outside and watch the fly fishing for trout, and the black boy. Took some finding, but so well worth it. Food excellent and a nice roaring fire. The wykham arms by the college was a real treat as well, Get there early to park yourself next to the open fire on a cold day.
We took a walking tour of Winchester which was only a few quid and very informative. You can then remember where you saw the restaurants and pubs to investigate later. The walk to the top of the hill overlooking Winchester was well worth the view, and you cant miss the black boy pub on the way back to rest your legs.
One of my better Sunday breaks. Hotel staff very helpful and polite. Good job! Enjoy.

Room Tip: Room 102. top view of the Cathedral.
