“christmas wedding lunch”
Reviewed 23 December 2011

We booked for a private wedding lunch. On arriving we found the restaurant closed but they had reserved a table in the "bar". It was cold, drafty and un-christmassy. We waited an hour for our first course. They were preparing for a christmas party in the evening and couldnt really be bothered with us. We had to ask for a christmas menu , the waiter did what he could but really just wanted to serve snacks. Only plus points were the toilets which were very nice.

What a delight to stay at the Mercure Hotel in Winchester, friendly and helpful staff, reserved car parking space (in the centre of the City), superb room with a view of the Cathederal and an outstanding breakfast.

Room Tip: Pay the small extra charge (approx £10.00) and have a view of the Cathederal

The hotel itself was fine but the reservation system with Accor was very poor. The price I was offered as an accor cardholder was reduced after I booked but despite letters of complaint from me (unanswered by accor) I was not offered the reduced price.

When I booked the room, the confirmation said that I could ask for a cathredral view but it could not be guaranteed. I asked for it but when I arrived I was told it wouid cost £10 extra. Why was this not made clear when I booked.

Accor is too big and too uninterested in its customers. Bad customer relations like this will inevitably result in fewer bookings-certainly in my case. Any decent business should surely reply to letters and treat complaints seriously

Boy this hotel is not the best looking building, especially considering what it has to compete with! My room on the other hand was very spacious, clean and comfortable. The breakfast was good with a good selection from both buffet or menu. It is in a great location for exploring this beautiful city - downside is the parking.

This hotel looks a little out of place on the outside, nestled literally between the Cathedral and the High Street- it looks like an ugly concrete block! As soon as we walked in we were reassured- the lobby was dressed lovely for Xmas and the room was spacious and neatly designed. It was steps away from the High Street and just across the lawn from the Cathedral- how fab to wake up on Sunday morning to the bells! The only thing I would say is not to bother requesting a Cathedral view room. We'd read that there were only a few standard rooms that had a view so we put a request on the booking form- quite prepared not to get one. When we arrived we were surprised to find we had been given one (well, two as we'd booked two rooms!) but then were told there was a Christmas party and we'd hear some "boom boom". There was no offer to take a non-Cathedral view room instead- I did feel a bit like they took advantage of us to fill an undesirable room. The music was indeed very noisy although it quietened at 11pm and was shut off promptly at 12am. I also learnt that had there not been a party we would've been charged an extra £10 per room. To be honest there was a massive tree blocking most of the view so I would say it wasn't worth it (although I didn't see the view from the other rooms- I assume they overlooked the concrete back of Debenhams). Overall, however, the music didn't put us off and we had a great time in Winchester.

Dear fleeceylauren, Thanks for taking the time to write a review. Glad you enjoyed the location and sound of the bells of the cathedral. It does make it quite magical on a Sunday morning. Cathedral view rooms do have their advantages and I am delighted that we were were able to offer you one. I apologise for the music but am pleased to hear it did not put you off. Kind regards, William McWilliam

Sandwiched between the Cathedral and the pedestrianised High Street, it is perfectly central for the visitor. Rather drab exterior in fact blends in nicely with the historical ambience. Who wants a brash modernist building yards away from a 900 year old Cathedral, in any case? Inside the hotel, however, the emphasis is firmly on making the guest as comfortable as possible. Our room was spacious, huge bed, temperature perfect, and quiet. English breakfast came with the hotel deal.(Internet deal!) Lounge areas pleasing, with the bar area enjoying spectacular views of the Cathedral. We came for the Xmas Market. We have already pencilled in a return visit next December.

Room Tip: Facing the Cathedral

An amazing venue against the backdrop of Winchester Cathedral, with easy access to the town centre, and all the historic sites Winchester has to offer. The hotel is comfortable, and generally speaking the service is good upon arrival and in the dining room. Good standard breakfast, offering an excellent selection.

Car parking can be a problem, but every effort is made to assist you with this. If staying at weeeknds and you have a room on the back of the hotel, it can be a bit noisey late at night because of a local pub, so would recommend you ask for room overlooking the Cathedral..
